Importance of Directories
-
Hi there,
I just started using the pro tool 6 weeks or so ago. I have done all the on page optimization I can and am starting to think more about building links to my site.
What I want to know is how important are directories as part of this link building program?
Should I treat doing an audit of what directories we are in, identifying what ones we should be in, and actually signing up for these ones as an important and vital part of the link building program?
So basically how important are directories? We are a b 2 b business if that helps.I am kind of assuming directories are (still) important and that we should spend some time on this, but just wanted to get some expert thoughts on directories, approach to use etc etc. I reckon it should be easier than other link building, as we can at least pay a fee and get in the directory, so it’s less a case of someone doing us a favor as other links sometimes seem to be….

Hi Mark,
You might want to ask this in a new question. Currently, Q&A admins are the only ones who can sort questions by most recent activity, so your comment isn't going to show for people just browsing the recent questions submitted to Q&A.

The Pegasus Directory is not showing up on the first or second page on Google for the phrase "Pegasus Directory"; could be a Google Penalty. Anyone know anything about this?

I would definitely recommend getting listed in directories. Instead of doing the bare minimum on a bunch of them, pick several relevant, high authority ones and keep updating and optimizing your listings.

I believe directories still have a lot of SEO value. I wouldn't just submit to every directory you find but rather target some very specific directories that are closely related to your industry. If you don't mind paying for some there are some good ones, BOTW, Business.com, Pegasus, romow, aviva, Yahoo Dir etc.. In addition to passing some link juice they also can help the search engines find your site if it is new.

Making a custom web directory
I am wondering if it is beneficial to launch a social bookmarking website based on Semantic Scuttle [http://semanticscuttle.sourceforge.net/demo] in order to gain inbound links. For the sake of example, say my industry is ebooks. I would of course add links to all of my products to the site. In addition, I would want to add links to competitors products to the site to make the site actually useful and not look like spam. On the face of it, is this a good idea? Secondly, I of course wouldn't want to be helping out competitors, so would any of these actions be advisable? add nofollow links to all links except those pointing to my site. ads or featured listings pointing to my links. I make it so only voted on links are dofollow. Thus, competitors could actually get links from my site. Naturally, I would vote on all my submissions. The idea of the site would actually be to provide a meaningful service. Once it's done I would want to get people linking to it. Any advice? Thanks! Edit: I added scenario #3 which I think is probably the best option, if this is even a good idea. I would also make some static content to really make this a good resource!

My Yahoo Directory listing isn't being indexed by Google - what do to?
I couldn't find this elsewhere in Q&A...so here goes. I recently (a couple of months back) shelled out $300 for a Yahoo Directory listing. My site got included, but my PageRank didn't budge. Figuring it may take a while, I kept on checking Google's index for the link - still nothing. Now it seems as if some Yahoo & other directory categories are excluded from the Google Index, rendering the links useless from a PR point of view. Anything I can do about this? I've heard of suggestions like linking to the specific page of the category where I'm listed, in the hope Google will crawl and re-index, but I don't know. Any thoughts / suggestions? BTW the directory category link is: http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Telecommunications/Wireless/Software. Thanks in advance...

Can we submit our website irrelevant directories and resources?
Hey, Can you tell me if it is a good practice to submit our website to a "quality" but an irrelevant web directory? For example, i run article writing service, so it is good to submit my website to a directory that's not about article writing services? Thanks in advance! Mohd

How important are exact keywords in your anchor text?
Hi Guys, I’m relatively new to SEO. I’ve recently started working for a website design company and am in the process of changing the anchor text in the footer of all of our clients sites. At the moment most of them read “graphic design & web development by dara creative” with anchor text being dara creative taking you to our home page. As you can see we are not fully taking advantage of the keywords that could have a higher impact. So I’ve done some keyword research and I hope to concentrate my efforts on the following keywords as the anchor text leading to the home page; website design Dublin, website design Ireland, web developemt Dublin and web design Ireland so it may read something like “web design Dublin by dara creative” However this doesn’t read so well as people may think that the company might be called “web design Dublin”. So the alternative might be “web design in Dublin by dara creative”. So my question is which would rank better? Does google rank the exact searched keywords higher than broader searched words? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks rob

Question on Links from Directories…
Hello,
Link Building | | inhouseninja
When I do an OSE back link analyses of some sites that are listed in some directories we are considering, for almost all the directories and companies in them, the directories are listed in the OSE report, listed as followed, and usually have decent domain rank and page rank. So this means that the link from the directory is obviously being picked up by OSE and it’s listed as a followable link. My question is just because the link is picked up by OSE does that mean that the search engines value it too? Or could Google see the link ok but throw it out of the equation, presumably because it does not “like” the directory? Hope this makes sense

Listings, paid profiles and directories
Hi, In the industry I am working in (education), we do have a lot of portals offering paid listings (for example profiles featuring a school, the courses you offer, sometimes with reviews etc). Almost all big competitors and big names normally do have these kind of listings. Besides from having to decide if these sites really bring the relevant conversions, I am wondering about their impact on SEO. An example for an offer:

Our Top Picks listing is a 40 word listing and logo we put on any 30 pages of our web site, example.com for 12 months, for $595 US. You can choose the pages you want, or we can put you on all our [category] pages, or certain continents/countries you want to target. Now, I am wondering: Do I have to worry about my linking profile ? (All of sudden a bunch of links with the exact same anchortext and content embedding to our site?) Or can I just decide to go with a paid listing based on the link value the page offers me? Looking forward to reading what you think!
