Https enabled site with seo issues
-
Hello,
Is there a problem with seo bots etc to crawl and rank my wesbite well if the entire site is https enabled?
We have a sign in button which results on the next page being https along with the main homepage and all other pages are https enabled.
Any major setbacks to the seo strategies?
How do I overcome these issues?

That depends on what you define as a problem.
If you use relative URLs in hyperlinks in your website and Google enters at an https page then it will assume that other pages crawled to are also https. Thus https pages will be indexed instead of http. This can cause problems in the long run. I would set links in https pages as http absolute links e.g. in the sign in page.

Hi Shashank,
If I understand you correctly once a user logs in, they switch to https.
I have 2 answers for you, depending on your current configuration.
If you can view a HTTP version of your site without logging in. Meaning you don't have to log in to view any important content on the site, then you would simply block the crawlers from indexing the HTTPS version, and allow them to index the HTTP. This is done with a robots.txt file and .httaccess
A common way would be to check if the user agent is using PORT 443 which is the HTTPS port, then redirect them to the HTTPS specific robots.txt file.
"Then add the following lines to your .htaccess (in the root of your webhosting).
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$
RewriteRule ^robots.txt$ robots_ssl.txtIf you dont have an .htaccess file, create a new one - be sure to put these 2 lines at the top of it:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on "REF: VN7.com Forums

LINK..If your site forces a person to login before they can view any content, then you have an issue. The problem with that is there is no way for a crawler to login to your site, thus they can not see (crawl) your site to index it.
It is normal for websites to have both HTTP and HTTPS versions. For example, you can view our e-commerce site in either protocol, and we require HTTPS for anything account related. That said, we also block bots from viewing any content on HTTPS because we want them to only index the HTTP version.
One last thing.. Your site may have pages that are only HTTPS, such pages are generally used to display or record personal information, like a person's phone, email, address, or for conducting financial transactions. These types of pages server no value in having them crawled so there is no need to try and get them indexed.
Hope that helps and makes since,
Don

Coming soon SEO
Hi, I was wondering what is the best practice to redirect all the links juice by redirecting all the pages of your website to a coming soon page. The coming soon page will point to the domain.com, not to a subfolder. Should I move the entire website to a subfolder and redirect this folder to the coming soon page? Thanks

Image centric site and duplicate content issues
We have a site that has very little text, the main purpose of the site is to allow users to find inspiration through images. 1000s of images come to us each week to be processed by our editorial team, so as part of our process we select a subset of the best images and process those with titles, alt text, tags, etc. We still host the other images and users can find them through galleries that link to the process and unprocessed image pages. Due to the lack of information on the unprocessed images, we are having lots of duplicate content issues (The layout of all the image pages are the same, and there isn't any unique text to differentiate the pages. The only changing factor is the image itself in each page) Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue, will be greatly appreciated.

Site Map Problems or Are They?
According to webmaster tools my Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt Our site map is generically generated and encompasses all web pages, whether I have excluded them using the robots.txt file As far as I am aware this has never been an issue until recently. Is this hurting my rankings and how do I fix it? Secondly, webmaster tools says there is over 5,000 error/warnings on my site map. But site map is only 1,400 or so pages submitted. How do I see what is going on?
