Are reciprocal links bad (if overused)
-
Hi, is it possible that having too many reciprocal links on my website may cause damage to my SEO campaign? One of my main competitors has a page dedicated to links to other pretty relevant companies (probably around 20 in total) but is doing extremely well. Lots of other relevant websites are allowing me to link to them, in exchange for a link back. How many is too many if so? Thanks!

Thanks Oleg.
I have started putting together some ideas for new content etc and won't be making a links page! I will also try to avoid excessive link exchanging.

Thanks Marie, very helpful advice.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I think that I am getting the hang of this ( a little)!
All help appreciated.

Google doesn't tell us how many reciprocal links are too many, but they recently added reciprocal linking to their quality guidelines saying, ask Oleg mentioned to avoid pages that exist for this purpose: "Excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you")"
Some reciprocal linking is natural. As mentioned on SEOMoz before, SEOMoz has a partnership with Distilled and they routinely will link back to each other.
I would definitely avoid creating a page like you have mentioned. It could end up getting you penalized. (I recently worked with a client who had an unnatural links penalty in their webmaster tools and they had a large number of blogroll links exchanged with other sites.)
A better option would be to offer to exchange quality articles with these webmasters and in the article link back to each other's sites.

Building off of what Oleg said - Linking back to sites that aren't relevant to your site in any way can only be bad for your SEO campaign. My rule of thumb is to never offer reciprocal links.
There are a couple of ways to get around reciprocating links:
-
Offer to write content for their site on a topic that you are an expert on and place a link in the content
-
Create compelling content that is worth linking to in the first place so the site will want to link to you with out reciprocation.
Creating a page on your site with a bunch of spammy links will only have a negative effect on your SEO campaign. It will undermine the link building.

Tough call. In general, if used excessively, Google frown's upon it.
Excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you")
However, I've seen plenty of sites rank very well with just these kinds of links.
-
Link only to relevant pages that you believe supplement the purpose of your site
-
Make sure your link quantity is not unruly - if you have 300 links just thrown on a page, users trying to find a specific link will get confused. Try to add value to your links and make sure they are are manually reviewed.
If you really want to do it right, don't make a links page for the sake of reciprocal link exchanges. Instead, try to link to helpful sites naturally and ask them to reciprocate the link.
And of course, don't link to or get links from crappy sites.

Removing bad/poor quality links from the site
Sometime back my site was penalized due to unnatural artificial and deceptive links. Then we got removed the penalty by uploading file in Disavow Tool. Bad links are decreasing gradually now . What i am concerned to ask is that: 1: For how long i should wait till Google removes all the requested bad links 2:Second, i believe there are still many bad links that I dont want to keep. How to remove them now onward? Should we send Google a reconsideration request for removing the remaining bad links (site has been recovered already and no more under penalty banner) Tanveer

Does This Link Have Value?
Hi Mozzers, A client paid to publish a white paper, thinking that the link to the web site is beneficial. The link does redirect back to the web site, but is in a format that I've never seen: http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YdyyLrzOQJxM87SJZkJYVbQKSdCmFpwqg1fuX3yqVqpGboUjdSaHv9IdW5HsQpgmvwOrg5N4T3DNHYV8e1UVe_YCua_XQCFykoSJvu1HzDyb-3x-aFcPU-ER-vwWxq4- Does this link have any value?

Do footer links pass less link juice?
One of my best inbound links for PA and DA happens to be a footer link, curious if it's less valuable or has any value at all.

I am getting links on people's wordpress blogs but are not showing up on the just discovered tool. Is it true that wordpress links are no-follow links that do give off any link-juice?
A blogger told me that "wordpress.com does not allow blogs to show advertisements or use links to sites that sell merchandise of any kind" is this true? Am i wasting my outreach time trying to get links from wordpress operated blogs?

Reciprocal Link Dangers?
I know that there are issues with reciprocal linking, and I'd choose to avoid it if I could, but the circumstance I have been put into may require me to do so. Say we do it in the worst possible way. What is the worst case scenario here? Is it possible to be hit with a site-wide penalty? Is there a range of penalties? or you just get dinged or not? Will the links themselves simply be devalued? and by how much? they loose half their juice? All of it? And if you are penalized, how difficult would it be to recover? Can you just ditch the recips? or is it a lot more difficult than that? Obviously it has to do more with how you do it and what your site and the other site are like content-wise, but I just wanted to know what you think about the actual possible penalties and recovery. TIA for any answers.

Advetorial links
How do you scientifically value advertorial links. I have a site who is willing to buy advertorial in large online sites which will contain links. (I would prefer they invested in content on their own site). The DA on these sites is universally extremely strong. the PA of the examples I've seen is pretty low. The site has strong DA matching it's main competition and is performing pretty well in terms of ranking. Question: how do you value this kind of link in terms of the amount of £ the publications want to charge. Anybody have a formula or a logical process which would provide solid advice rather than don't infringe Google's T&C's which I've already mentioned to them. Any thoughts appreciated.

Back Links
Hi there, I have been guest posting on blogs trying to build some back-links into my website, which so far is going not too bad, however I was wondering when writing these guest posts should I limit my post to let's say 2 back-links per guest post? If 2 back-links are going to different pages on my website, does the first back-links in the guest post have more value than the 2nd back-link? Kind Regards,

Link Ratio
Does Google (or other search engines) penalize websites if they have a too many inbound links from a single domain? (Say for instance, I have 500 inbound links, and 400 of them are from one root domain.)
