How Do You Currently Analyze Outbound Link Profiles?
-
So I'm looking at some potential guest blogging &/or article writing opportunities and I'm looking for a tool which will analyze the OUTBOUND links from the site....it would be handy if inbound were displayed too but not essential as there are many tools available for this.
When I ask for sample sites it is clear that a number of them (all?!) have been created purely for us content purposes, however it would be good to analyze the site further. A tool that could analyze its outbound links would give me a rough idea if the site is suitable or simply a glorified link-farm.
Also, if you have any useful links regarding industry averages on outbound links for blogs & article sites (eg Ezine) for benchmarking it would be good!
Thanks

Hi! Just wondering if these answers helped solve your question, or if you'd still like some more advice.

i second Xenu .Excellent tool for checking outbound links
Here's another interesting tool that checks all the outbound links on a particular page and validates them

Hey C,
I'd like to start my response by pointing out, if you're trying to aquire links from sites that you feel have been generated for content purposes only, then surely it would be better to target higher quality sites? Sure these sites are working now, but it's better to invest in real content on real sites in the long run, as the effectiveness of this epidemic of low quality guest posting is going to come to an end soon.
However, I'm not one to judge and we've all been there
SO to answer your question - When checking outbound links I tend to use either screaming frog or xenu then dump the export into Scrapebox. I check for anomalies and whether the pages that the sites are linking to are cached (occasionally PR as well). From there you can export the links into your favourite backlink checking tool (LinkResearchTools / OSE API / Ahrefs) etc.
Other Outbound Link Checkers:
Xenu
Screaming Frog
Wintzell - http://www.wintzell.net/seo-tools/domain-outbound-links-check.php
Bad Neighborhood Tool - http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm (Checks external sites as well so can take a long time)Not sure what the averages are, but I think a bit of common sense goes a long way in this instance. If the site has 100 guest posts, and 3+ outbound links in the author bio per page + sidebar links, you know it's overkill.
On the otherhand the site accepts occasional guest-posts and consists of high quality content, then they may have the same number of links as most good sites will link contextually to relevent sources. So averages / figures don't really help in this instance

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Shortened URL showing as linking page
I'm using Open Site Explorer to look at backlinks and referring pages to my site. I'm seeing 3 links coming from http://j.mp/XXXXXX (not actual link) which is a bitly shortened URL. It shows as a 301 redirect, and I'm trying to figure out if there is any way to find where that link is originating from? When I try to search for the exact j.mp url in google it brings up one result which is the page the link redirects to. Any Ideas? Thanks a lot.

Currently Number 2 - Worth Shooting for 1?
Hello SEO Community, So I was able to rise to #2 in a highly competitive search term after a guest blog post that I wrote really took off (wish I could recreate that for my other terms, haha) Anyway, I steadily rose from 30ish to number 2 and have obviously seen more traffic, which is awesome and I'm happy. But still, in terms of the amount of traffic that google estimates the keyword gets, and the amount I'm getting at #2, it seems like #1 is getting the VAST majority (I know this is how most markets work). Judging from my link profile compared to #1, it would be extremely difficult to dethrone them. So what do y'all think? Is it worth spending time and resources shooting for the glory and traffic of #1 and potentially never getting there - or focusing my efforts on my middling keywords and getting those on the first page as well?

Small Link nalysis project - anyone
Hi, Not sure if someone can help me out. OSE only show the best mozrank data but i might have some links under that benchmark. Therefore anybody with a Majestic account that can filter new links from April 2012 to date. Payment not a problem. WMTools isnt showing data that i expected, so maybe its not there. Need a secondary opinion of the data from another source. Ive contacted some SEOmoz Recommended Companies...no response. Clearly have better things to do maybe.

My Competition is using some Strange Achord Text and Inbound Links
I was doing some research and a lot of my competition are websites from Universities, but I got surprised when I saw that a lot of their Anchor Text where things like Buy Viagra , Play poker , Buy Cialis , a lot of their inbound links where about things like that , one of the sites I was doing research on was www.imba.ie.edu , this site was #1 for the keyword I want that is related to education. Also other sites on the #1 page of google for this keyword (universities websites) had the same kind of inbound links and achord texts. Whats going on here??

Multiple links from Dmoz/Google directories worldwide
I came across www.soundandvision.com and did a Link Analysis on them.... http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/www.soundandvision.com/a!links I noticed that the top links they have are from Google directories or Google IP's. How has this happened? I am listed in Dmoz in the UK does this mean I have automatically appeared around the world. Dmoz is pretty strict about rejecting links how can a company be listed so much? Is this a good practise? Cheers
