Google Analytics - Custom Variables
-
Hi guys,
I'd appreciate any advice with this one.
At the moment I'm in the process of arranging a URL re-structure. I was wondering what the best way would be to track the performance of the old URLs against new ones?
We will be ammending the URLs for any new property pages which go live on our website but leaving the old URLs in play for any old properties listed. We're taking this approach for the moment so we can conduct analysis on the change.
It has been mentioned to me that placing a 'setvariable' in the code of pages with the old URLs and ones with the new URLs would be a way of tracking performance. However, my knowledge in this area is a little bit grey.
Any advice?
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Have you considered using Google Experiments in Google Analytics to test the pages? You can test variations of pages and their effectiveness by simply entering the different URLs - https://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1745147&topic=1745207
(Experiments is under the Content Menu in Google Analytics)
If you want to go down the custom variable route here is a great how to that should explain it all simply for you (I used it myself) -

What are you going to be measuring, in terms of performance, in order to be able to judge which page type has been more successful?
The reason I ask is because I am trying to understand how you will define one page type performing better than another.

Why not use Advanced Segments? You can find more detailed information here: http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1033017
For example, if your old URLs looks like:
www.mysite.com/old.php?cat=12&pid=113
And the new ones looks like
www.mysite.com/category-12/product-113
You can easily create advanced segments to monitor the performance.

Google News problem
Hello to all. The latest Google algorithm changes have had a big impact on the way that Google news features stories, at least in my country. I've been featured heavily in Google News until about 6th of october, when the changes had the biggest impact, but since then, I haven't been featured at all. Prior to this, I would be featured for keywords on almost any article, not necessarily on the 1st position, but I was almost always there. Posts still show up in the dedicated News category, but not in the main search pages. I've seen a lot of websites being impacted, but some with lower ranks than mine still show up there. I haven't done any changes prior to the 6th of october, and I haven't done any link building campaings, just getting links from higher ranking news sites in my country, for articles I wrote. What I'd like to know is if there were any major changes for Google News and I'm not complying with any of them, or If i could check to see if there are any other problems. I don't have any penalties disclosed by Google, and no new errors in the Webmasters console, I'm just baffled by the fact that overnight the website was completely cut off from being featured in Google News. And one other strange thing, I'm now ranking better for searches that are kind of opposite to my website's main theme. Think about mainly writing about BMW, and less about AUDI, but ranking a lot better for the latter, and a lot less for the other. Thank you.

Vanity URLs are being indexed in Google
We are currently using vanity URLs to track offline marketing, the vanity URL is structured as www.clientdomain.com/publication, this URL then is 302 redirected to the actual URL on the website not a custom landing page. The resulting redirected URL looks like: www.clientdomain.com/xyzpage?utm_source=print&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=printcampaign. We have started to notice that some of the vanity URLs are being indexed in Google search. To prevent this from happening should we be using a 301 redirect instead of a 302 and will the Google index ignore the utm parameters in the URL that is being 301 redirect to? If not, any suggestions on how to handle? Thanks,

Huge ranking difference between google and bing
I am trying to rank for the keyword "trash bags" I did a lot of on-page optimization and link building. We started ranking #2 on bing and yahoo but google seems to be stubbornly fluctuating between being as high as 20 and as low as 45 and even dropped our rankings for a couple of weeks. Is there any need for concern if google is acting so different from bing/yahoo?

Why are Google search results different if you are log'd into Google or not?
I get different results when I'm log'd into my Google account associated with my website than if I'm not. The same country is occurring. So how can I rely on the google results I'm seeing? For instance my site is page 1 with the improvements I made based on SEOMOZ if I'm log'd in. Yet I'm not on the first 25 pages if I'm not logged in.

Openx IFrame and tracking in Analytics
Hi, We're running our own adserver and we use OPENX. The problem is with the iframe invocation type that we have been using to show ads on pages. My question is: How can we track the ad clicks that are being showed in the iframe? I know the method in Analytics to count outgoing links as pageviews or events but I am not sure how to do this for clicks for OPENX Iframes as they don't even include Google Analytics tracking code inside the iframe. any ideas appreciated
