Best use of robots.txt for "garbage" links from Joomla!
-
I recently started out on Seomoz and is trying to make some cleanup according to the campaign report i received.
One of my biggest gripes is the point of "Dublicate Page Content".
Right now im having over 200 pages with dublicate page content.
Now.. This is triggerede because Seomoz have snagged up auto generated links from my site.
My site has a "send to freind" feature, and every time someone wants to send a article or a product to a friend via email a pop-up appears.
Now it seems like the pop-up pages has been snagged by the seomoz spider, however these pages is something i would never want to index in Google.
So i just want to get rid of them.
Now to my question
I guess the best solution is to make a general rule via robots.txt, so that these pages is not indexed and considered by google at all.
But, how do i do this? what should my syntax be?
A lof of the links looks like this, but has different id numbers according to the product that is being send:
http://mywebshop.dk/index.php?option=com_redshop&view=send_friend&pid=39&tmpl=component&Itemid=167
I guess i need a rule that grabs the following and makes google ignore links that contains this:
view=send_friend

Hi Henrik,
It can take up to a week for SEOmoz crawlers to process your site, which may be an issue if you recently added the tag. Did you remember to include all user agents in your first line?
User-agent: *
Be sure to test your robots.txt file in Google Webmaster Tools to ensure everything is correct.
Couple of other things you can do:
1. Add a rel="nofollow" on your send to friend links.
2. Add a meta robots "noindex" to the head of the popup html.
3. And/or add a canonical tag to the popup. Since I don't have a working example, I don't know what to canonical it too (whatever content it is duplicating) but this is also an option.
-
I just tried to add
Disallow: /view=send_friend
I removed the last /
however a crawl gave me the dublicate content problem again.
Is my syntax wrong?
-
The second one "Disallow: /*view=send_friend" will prevent googlebot from crawling any url with that string in it. So that should take care of your problem.
-
So my link example would look like this in robots.txt?
Disallow: /index.php?option=com_redshop&view=send_friend&pid=&tmpl=component&Itemid=
Or
Disallow: /view=send_friend/
-
Your right I would disallow via robots.txt & a wildcard (*) wherever a unique item id # could be generated.

Duplicate pages with "/" and without "/"
I seem to have duplicate pages like the examples below: https://example.com https://example.com/ This is happening on 3 pages and I'm not sure why or how to fix it. The first (https://example.com) is what I want and is what I have all my canonicals set too, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything. I've also setup 301 redirects for each page with "/" to be redirected to the page without it. Doing this didn't seem to fix anything as when I use the (https://example.com/) URL it doesn't redirect to (https://example.com) like it's supposed to. This issue has been going on for some time, so any help would be much appreciated. I'm using Squarespace as the design/hosting site.

How should we handle re-directory links? Should we remove these links?
We are currently cleaning up bad links that were purchased by a previous SEO agency. We have found links on anonym.to pages that redirect traffic to our site automatically. How should this be handled? Should we remove these links?

Rel="canonical" again
Hello everyone, I should rel="canonical" my 2 languages website /en urls to the original version without /en. Can I do this from the header.php? Should I rel="canonical" each /en page (eg. en/contatti, en/pagina) separately or can I do all from the general before the website title? Thanks if someone can help.

Blocked URL's by robots.txt
In Google Webmaster Tools shows me 10,936 Blocked URL's by robots.txt and it is very strange when you go to the "Index Status" section where shows that since April 2012 robots.txt blocked many URL's. You can see more precise on the image attached (chart WMT) I can not explain why I have blocked URL's ? because I have nothing in robots.txt.

My robots.txt is like this: User-agent: * I thought I was penalized by Penguin in April 2012 because constantly i'am losing visitors now reaching over 40%. It may be a different penalty? Any help is welcome because i'm already so saturated. Mera robotstxt.jpg0 -
Domain "Forwarded"?
Hi SEOMoz! The company I work for has a website, www.accupos.com, but they also have an old domain which is not used anymore called http://accuposretail.com/ These two sites had duplicate content so I requested the OLD site (http://accuposretail.com/) be redirected to accupos.com to eliminate the dupe content. Unfortunately, I do not understand completely what happened but when they performed this forwarding the accuposretail.com URL is still in use. Now it just displays EXACTLY what accupos.com displays and not something similar. The tech team told me it is forwarded but I can't help but see the URL still in the search box on top. Is this unacceptable? The actual URL has to forward and change to the accupos.com URL in order to not be duplicate content, correct? I have limited experience in this. Please let me know if we are good to go, or if I need to tell them more action is required. Thanks! Derek M

Diagnostic says too many links on a page and most of the pages are from blog entries. Are tags considered links? How do I decrease links?
I just ran my first diagnostic on my site and the results came back were negative in the area of too many links one a page. There were also quite a few 404 errors. What is the best way to fix these problems? Most of the pages with too many links are from blog posts, are the tags counted as well and is this the reason for too many links?

Un-Indexing a Page without robots.txt or access to HEAD
I am in a situation where a page was pushed live (Went live for an hour and then taken down) before it was supposed to go live. Now normally I would utilize the robots.txt or but I do not have access to either and putting a request in will not suffice as it is against protocol with the CMS. So basically I am left to just utilizing the and I cannot seem to find a nice way to play with the SE to get this un-indexed. I know for this instance I could go to GWT and do it but for clients that do not have GWT and for all the other SE's how could I do this? Here is the big question here: What if I have a promotional page that I don't want indexed and am met with these same limitations? Is there anything to do here?

Invisible robots.txt?
So here's a weird one... Client comes to me for some simple changes, turns out there are some major issues with the site, one of which is that none of the correct content pages are showing up in Google, just ancillary (outdated) ones. Looks like an issue because even the main homepage isn't showing up with a "site:domain.com" So, I add to Webmaster Tools and, after an hour or so, I get the red bar of doom, "robots.txt is blocking important pages." I check it out in Webmasters and, sure enough, it's a "User agent: * Disallow /" ACK! But wait... there's no robots.txt to be found on the server. I can go to domain.com/robots.txt and see it but nothing via FTP. I upload a new one and, thankfully, that is now showing but I've never seen that before. Question is: can a robots.txt file be stored in a way that can't be seen? Thanks!
