Is a reciprocal link the same value as a non-reciprocal
-
So I just started a few weeks ago doing some linkbuilding for my photography site at http://danielvaladas.com
I started by adding my site to some of the business directories recommended by SeoMoz + some local and specialized directories I found myself and from my competitors.
I also sponsored a local charity in exchange for a link on their PR3 website and I wanted to blog on my site about this sponsorship. I am wondering if it is better to link back to them or not. Is this one way link of more value if I don't link back to them?

Very informative, thanks for those two links

These are really good! Thanks for sharing.
I guess the key here is not to make it excessive if you do it.

Most of the time reciprocal links are fine, as far as we know. It's when Google detects a pattern of reciprocal linking that looks unnatural. These include link wheels and 3 way linking schemes and plans so complicated I couldn't even begin to describe them.
In your case, you should be fine.

Actually, I don't know where I got that PR3. The home page is PR4 and I have links from two of their PR2 pages.
I like the idea of doing some link building with sponsorships because I also like the "side effects" such as showcasing my work and products and having my logo on the products, their annual reports, etc.
I do understand that the link schemes guidelines are just guidelines and that I won't get automatically banned from having a link from a charity or a paid directory as long as I also have other natural links. However, I was just wondering if I sould link back to them or not. So I guess I'll not make the link reciprocal.
Thanks for your advice.

That's "technically" true but you there is no way Google will consider it that way. They generally penalize people for who use a site that primarily does this for revenue. I doubt your nonprofit will ever get penalized for this. Just don't make the link reciprocal and you'll be fine. Also, I wouldn't make this a normal practice. Every now and again is okay especially for a cause you believe in. I don't think there is anything in Google's algo that will penalize you for this. I get nonprofit links all the time when I used to give speeches. I never got penalized for it.

Well, if I go by these guidelines, I am already doing a link scheme just by asking a link for my sponsrship:
"exchanging goods or services for links; or sending someone a “free” product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link"
As far as diverse link profile, opensiteexplorer is a bit late on my recent work, but I estimate I have links from about 20 domains. Maybe about 80% directories and professionnal local associations and the other 20% natural links. And as far as I can think, only 2 of these 20 links are reciprocal.

I'm not a fan of reciprocal links. Having a link profile that is diverse is the key. Here is how I would do it.
You mentioned that their site is a pr3 but I will assume that their home page is the pr3. I would have them link to your home page and then write an article on your blog (assuming you have one) and on that page link back to their "donate" page for "more information on how to donate to the charity".
Google actually has more information on LInk Schemes on Webmaster Tools. Take a look there and it should answer a few of your questions too. Here's the link:

Links from my Own Blog to my Own Website and Link Scheme
Hi There, I use my own blog to give advices and offer information related to my business service. Of course in terms of SEO my blog is useful not only to expand my brand presence but also to acquire long-tail traffic. I use to insert a maximum of one link with a relative matching anchor text in every article of my blog pointing to my own webpage. Said that, the questions are as follows: Am I involuntarily participating in a Link Scheme with my blog? And If so, how many links can I send to my own webpage ? Shall I limit the number of links to a minimum? Thanks a lot for your advices.

Content Strategy - High Value on Lots of Sites vs. High Value on One Site
Good afternoon Mozzers. I have a discussion based question and I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I currently implement a content strategy where we create a series of high value How-to written articles, relevant to our audience and then work at getting them placed on multiple high value websites. I have just been offered an opportunity with a PR6 domain to create a similar series of content but place it all on their site with links back to ours through a dedicated section. So my question is would I gain more value from small amounts of great content in lots of places vs. a lot of great content in on place? Effectively 1 link from 20 sites vs. 20 links from 1 site.

Link Detox and Link Removal
I have a question about which links to remove after running a link detox from Link Research Tools. First a little back story. I had had an SEO company link building for one of the websites I own. But I have recently stopped working with them. In the last month my rankings have near dropped off the charts. I have just recently gotten access to Google webmaster tools and noticed an unnatural link warning from back in March. So yesterday I ran link detox and it reported 19 toxic links, 120 suspicious links, and 24 healthy links. It's rather obvious that I should remove all of the toxic links. They all from sites that have been deindexed by google. But my question is a about the suspicious links. What should my criteria be for removing them? Am I better off removing them all and leaving my site with only 24 healthy links or should I personally comb through them and remove only the worst of the worst so that I leave my site with a few more links? I'd really like to get the site ready to resubmit to google as soon as I can. Thoughts? yyCOf.png

Why does my site only have 4 internal followed links/internal links?
When using Open Site Explorer my site is winning in many categories but lacking in others as compared to competitors. I intend to improve on this but am a little confused by the extremely low number of "internal followed links" and "internal links" at just 4. My competitors have much more than that. Does this mean links to the root domain? Total internal links? I have many internal links so I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. What four internal links are getting noticed? I just went through and changed all the links that went to index.html to link to the root domain at www.njlimocarservice.com as I just found a Q&A that indicates this was better. So as of Wed at 5:45 PM all my links to the homepage went to index.html and not the root which is no longer the case. Not sure if this matters. At the same time I also just put a 301 from index.html to redirect to www.njlimocarservice.com. Any help appreciated! h9QuF.png

Link Location: In main page or inner "Link" page?
My question is what´s best of Link Building: have it in main page or in internal Link Pages. I have the problem that have to reduce the number of outgoing links in my mainpage to rank better, but do not want to miss any linkjuice. How Linking in Main Page or Internal Pages affects SERP for your website? And should they be Follow or not Follow? Thanks in advance Maria Jesus

Is it worth the effort trying to secure a link if the site has high domain authority but the page I want to link to me has page authority of 1?
