How important is having a 301 redirect?
-
Is having a 301 redirect a must for rankings when it comes to the www and non-www version of a site?
I am on the bottom of page 1 for my main key phrases but I can't do a 301 redirect with my web host that I've been with for over a year.
I've been considering changing web host (currently with Yahoo) but I also have concerns about transferring the site and the impact it might have because of the changing ip address.
So my options are
- Stay Put
- Change Web host
Which would you recommend?
-
I took a look at bronxpad.com in opensiteexloreer.org.
If this is the website you are referring to, when you implement these 301 redirects make sure you also redirect bronxpad.com/index.html and www.bronxpad.com/index.html to www.bronxpad.com, for the same reason as the non-www to the www.
-
GoDaddy would work, and in my experience, they offer great customer service.
-
If you have links pointing to both, then a 301 redirect will help your website's domain and page authority, which will help your rankings.
Any reputable US hosting company should be fine.

Any recommendations on hosting providers? I am based out of the Bronx in New York.
-
I have links pointing to both versions but the majority being the www version. I am based out of New York and I was wondering if hosting with a New York Web host would benefit or not.

The reason we 301 redirect non-www to www is to make sure search engines do not index two versions of your website. You can check it though a Google search: "site:yoursite.com"
This will give you all of the pages indexed by Google. If there is a yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com in the results, two versions are indexed, and a 301 redirect might allow you to rank even higher.
If there are two versions indexed, I would consider changing your host if you can secure a properly located IP address. Changing your sites IP address can affect rankings due to geo-location, so make sure it is properly geo-located. Most reputable hosting companies can easily take care of this.

David is right, you need to check the links made to both the non www and www version. Normally Google recommends 301 redirect because if there are some links made to your non www version then 301 redirect will pass link value (link juice) of non www version to www version (or vice versa).
If there are not much links made to your non www version, then I guess there is not much to worry and you can just keep it as it is (If its really hard to do it as it is in your case).
-
Also, in regards to changing hosts, I wouldn't worry about the IP address implications too much. As long as you move to a reputable host you should be fine.
-
The non www to www is often used to consolidate links, if you had external links pointing to both versions of your domain. Without being able to inspect your site, specifically if you have an issue with links pointing to each version of the domain, it's hard to say how much of an impact it will have. Still a best practice to put in place to avoid the issue though.

301 Redirect - Rank Recovery Examples?
Hi All, I recently did a 301 redirect. Page to Page and the notified google via its console. Its been 6 days since. The home page and one other high traffic page swopped out with the new domain on google search index with 3-4 drops in ranking for each. The rest of the sites pages have been indexed but still reflect the old domain when searched. Recently today my home page dropped even further to the second page of google index for the specific keyword. Can you share similar experiences and how long it took you to recover rank fully? and how long for all pages to swop out on google search's index? Regards Mike

Redirect Plugin: Redirecting or Rewriting?
Hey everybody! It's been a while since off the boards! I am reworking a site and I have been looking into their Redirection Plugin. I personally tend to lean towards just using the .htaccess because, well, why not. However, when looking deeper into the plugin I found myself a little confused with their redirection wording. RewriteRule ^/products/landing-page-october-2015/$ /products/special-education-news-october-2015/ [R=301,L] Is that the same thing as a classic Redirect 301?

Should i redirect this page?
Hi I have the following 2 pages: http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning.aspx http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Funeral-Plans.aspx My dilema is that google sees the words "funeral planning" & "funeral plans" as the same thing, which might explain why the "funeral plan" page is not ranked v well. My issue is that the "funeral planning" page is at category level and introduces the wider subject of funeral planning, which isnt just funeral plans, so if i 301 my "funeral plan" page i will have no where to talk about funeral plans. My question is, Is the "funeral plan" page not ranked v well because of this or do i just need better optimisation of the funeral plan page so google is clear which is the key focus for each page? Thanks Ash

301 redirect a old site that has been "dead" for a while?
Hi guys, A quick question. I have a client who has an old business website that had some great links (Forbes.com, CocaCola.com, etc). The problem is that he knew nothing about SEO and let the hosting expire. He still owns the domain, but the site is no longer listed in Google. He did no SEO, so I am not worried about being hit by any artificial anchor text penalties, since the links are as natural as it gets. So my questions is, would there be any benefit from 301 redirecting that site to his new business? The new business is in almost exactly the same niche as the old site. I am thinking of 301'ing to a sub-page which will refer to his past venture with the old business, not to the homepage of the new site. Thanks in advance for your help.

Redirect a temporary IP
I was performing some development work on a client's site recently under a temporary location on the host's server, for example: http://11.22.33.444/~accountname/folder/page.html Google managed to index a couple of pages using this url 😞 I have updated DNS to the correct domain and the site is live, but I am a bit confused in regards to the correct way to create a 301 Redirect for this example or at least a way point it to our 404 page. I am hoping someone more proficient with htaccess can help me out a bit... Thanks!
