302 to 301
-
Hello,
We have a temporary redirect (302?) from http url to https url. Seomoz has suggested that we change the 302 temporary redirect to a permanent 301 redirect.
Sounds good.... but how do we do that?!
Appreciate any and all feedback!

Coming in late on this thread. There's actually muliple ways to redirect from http to https, depending on your server configuration and so on. It's very possible your developer did set this up in the .htaccess file. If a 301 isn't defined (or none is defined) I believe it can default to a 302.
I see Sanket has volunteered his help. Yay! Let us know what you find or if you need any help.

Can you PM me your httaccess code ? And your website URL ?

I found the .htaccess file. Inside I can find several places where there is a redirect to use WWW., or not. But I can't find the place where it says redirect http to https. What sort of text might it say?
Thanks!

It should be on root folder or in "public html" folder.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the reply. Actually, the original site developer made the 302 redirect. I found the httaccess file, but I can't see how to change the 302. I found several instances in the file where 301 is mentioned, but so far I can't find a reference to 302. Any idea what I should be looking for?

May I know which platform are you using ? And how you have done 302 redirect ?
If you have done it through httaccess file then KLLC is right, just replace 301 in place of 302.

Hello,
Its pretty simple by replacing 302 to 301, as you already have 302 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. If you have done it with .htaccess just edit the file and just replace 302 with 301.

301 vs 302
Hello everyone! I'm working with a site right now that is currently formatted as subdomain.domain.net. The old version of the site was formatted as domain.net, with domain.com and several other variants redirecting to the current format, subdomain.domain.net. All of these redirects are 302, and I'm wondering if I should have all these changed to 301. Many of our old backlinks go to the old format of domain.net and i know the juice isn't being passed through, but i was wondering if there is any reason why you may want a 302 over a 301 in this case? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Htaccess code to 301 redirect a folder change
Hi, I need some help to redirect all my site as there was a folder change. eg, the old structure was www.mysite.com/stuff-1/bags.html and I need it to go to the same structure without the "-1" eg: /stuff/bags.html

The "bags.html" will be lots of different products, so this would be a wildcard? What would the htaccess code need to be? Thanks0 -
Site Purchase and 301
Hello, I just started working with a new client. Since then the client has purchased another company. We have re-branded the new companies home page and 301 redirected the rest of the site's links to the corresponding pages on the holding companies site. Since then the rankings have tanked. I looked at both companies back link profiles and realized that they are quite spammy from the last SEO contractor they hired. That said, the site was ranking fine until last Friday. I was wondering if anyone had seen temporary rankings decrease after 301ing a domain to a different site? Thanks!

How do I clean up this 301 disaster?
I launched my site, InternetCE.com, and blog, www.continuingeducationjournal.com, a few years ago. I then learned I should probably merge the content, and foolishly created a subdomain, http://blog.internetce.com, and 301 redirected the blog to it. As an aside, my site is on a microsoft server, thus cannot host my wordpress blog on it. After a bit more study, I realized that my blog wasn't helping me nearly as much as it could be, so I 301'd it again to http://internetce.com/blog. In just becoming a pro member (long overdue) I realize that my entire site needs to be 301'd to merge non-www and www versions. I read somewhere that mr. cutts says not to 301 more than twice for fear of mistakenly being construed as something a bit to spammy. So, here I sit..not sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice on how to most efficiently correct this spaghetti bowl? Many thanks!
