E-Commerce Site - Duplicate Content
-
We run an e-commerce site with about 250,000 SKUs.
Certain items, such as a micro USB car charger, will be applicable to several different phones. Example:
http://www.wirelessemporium.com/p-165856-sony-xperia-ion-4g-lte-att-heavy-duty-car-charger.asp
As one can imagine with so many items, unique content for each item description page can be a challenge. What would be the best way to address this on a large scale?
-
That's correct. We do this for all compatible products.
-
If I understand correctly, you're saying that you're creating multiple SKUs for exactly the same product, and just changing the name of the product to reflect one of the phones the charger works for. Is that right?
-
hmm - I think it is what it is. The products you're selling are things that people need, but are fundamentally not that interesting.
I think the strategy of incentivising people to leave reviews is a good start (WEbucks). If you're able to generate enough UCG this way, you might consider not showing the same comments on both of the pages.
It looks like you're using a generic Meta description / keywords for both of the pages. You should be able to customize this inside your templates to use something more relevant to the page.
It looks like the descriptions are shared by other sites across the web. Ideally you could figure out a strategy generating something more unique here. Maybe by you could find a way of highlighting some of the best comments left specifically about that particular product in question?
-
250,000 SKUs is no joke. However, I was the GM for an online distributor that had over 80,000 SKUs and they had a lot of the same problems when I got there. However, in a few months I fixed those problems and more which led to almost doubling their sales.
The correct answer is not just SEO related but also takes a content management approach.
1st - with that many SKUs you need to trim some fat. Focus on the top 80% of your SKUs that you sell and cut the rest (or at least hide them). I cut the company I worked for down to almost 55k SKUs and based my decision on product age and SKU turns.
2nd - make sure your website has KILLER navigation! With that much content you will drown your clients. Choose less than 7 main categories and break each one of them down respectively. And then have multiple ways to slice those categories (i.e. price, mfg, size, etc). see http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ for an example of good organization of categories.
3rd - and this addresses your main question - correctly mark your pages for canonicalization. There are a lot of ways to do it but I'll just point you to what Google says on their WebMaster FAQ area: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139066
I hope that helps!

Duplicate page titles and Content in Woocommerce
Hi Guys, I'm new to Moz and really liking it so far!
On-Page Optimization | | jeeyer
I run a eCommerce site on Wordpress + WooCommerce and ofcourse use Yoast for SEO optimalisation I've got a question about my first Crawl report which showed over 600 issues! 😐 I've read that this is something that happens more often (http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success). Most of them are categorized under:
1. Duplicate Page Titles or;
2. Duplicate Page Content. Duplicate Page Titles:
These are almost only: product category pages and product tags. Is this problem beeing solved by giving them the right SEO SERP? I see that a lot of categories don't have a proper SEO SERP set up in yoast! Do I need to add this to clear this issue, or do I need to change the actual Title? And how about the Product tags? Another point (bit more off-topic) I've read here: http://moz.com/community/q/yoast-seo-plugin-to-index-or-not-to-index-categories that it's advised to noindex/follow Categories and Tags but isn't that a wierd idea to do for a eCommerce site?! Duplicate Page Content:
Same goes here almost only Product Categories and product tags that are displayed as duplicate Page content! When I check the results I can click on a blue button for example "+ 17 duplicates" and that shows me (in this case 17 URLS) but they are not related to the fist in any way so not sure where to start here? Thanks for taking the time to help out!

How to deal with duplicate content when presenting event and sub-events information?
Hi, I'm have a sport event calendar website.
On-Page Optimization | | ahotu
It presents events that may have multiple races.
The event has its own page as well as the races. example :
Event: /event/edinburgh-marathon-festival Races:
/race/emf-half-marathon
/race/emf-10-km
/race/edinburgh-marathon
/race/emf-5-km The pages may have a lot of information in common (location, date, description) and they all link to each other.
What would be the best practices to avoid having the pages considered duplicate content by Google? Thanks0 -
Duplicate Content - Blog Rewriting
I have a client who has requested a rewrite of 250 blog articles for his IT company. The blogs are dispersed on a variety of platforms: his own website's blog, a business innovation website, and an IT website. He wants to have each article optimised with keyword phrases and then posted onto his new website thrice weekly. All of this is in an effort to attract some potential customers to his new site and also to establish his company as a leader in its field. To what extent would I need to rewrite each article so as to avoid duplicating the content? Would there even be an issue if I did not rewrite the articles and merely optimised them with keywords? Would the articles need to be completely taken by all current publishers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mobile blog creating duplicate title and content issues
My site is set up with a mobile website and after running the on page SEO report on moz it is returning multiple errors for duplicate title tags and duplicate content all related to the mobile website being a direct reflection of the main site. I want to know if this is really an issue. I'm sure Google actually knows the difference between my main site and the mobile version. Do I really need to go through each individual mobile page and change each page title and modify all the content? I really would like to avoid doing this but at the same time would like to fully optimize my site. Any advice is appreciated.
