The search button on my site no longer works. Any fixes?
-
I have a wordpress site (can be found at theFlooringGirl.com). On all the pages, there is a search button so you can search for words on the site, but it no longer seems to work.
My original webdesigner put it in, and I can't seem where to find it/where to edit/fix it. I finally found something that mentions "search" in the widget section and it is in the tool bar, but I can't find where/how to edit/fix it.
BTW, I do have two other smaller sites that have this button and it still works there...so if I could find where to edit, I could theoretically copy and paste the code...if I knew where).
Any advice?
Thx.

Hi Janis,
Sorry for not responding ... we have big time difference, my is GST +1
It is in the code in section. It can be added by plugin or widget. If you need help write me a private message. I can check it inside a WP files but I need an admin account to your WP.

Marek - I was trying to do this...but I don't know where to find this. Is it in the .htaccess file or the plugin section? Sorry to be so dense.
-
Wow Marek. Thx. I'm going to try that (right after dinner). Yes, I did recently upgrade to 3.5 so maybe that's what did it. Thank you so sooooo much!

Hi Janis,
below is your search code, just try delete the lines between <noscript>... </<span>noscript> (strikeout lines of code) and it should work.</span></span></span></p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><span><span>It looks like somebody did a mistake after last WP 3.5 update.</span></span></span></p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><span><span>Marek</span></span></span></p> <blockquote style="background-color: #f7f7f7; padding-top: 5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-left: 2px; padding-bottom: 5px; white-space: nowrap; overflow-y: auto; font-family: monospace; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><div class="search-float"></span></p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"> <img src="http://theflooringgirl.com/wp-content/plugins/images-lazyload-and-slideshow/blank_250x250.gif" file="http://theflooringgirl.com/wp-content/themes/theme/images/search-slide-button-Purple.gif" alt="search slide" class="search-slide-button lh_lazyimg"/></span></p> <p><span style="text-decoration: line-through;"><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><noscript><img src="http://theflooringgirl.com/wp-content/themes/theme/images/search-slide-button-Purple.gif" alt="search slide" class="search-slide-button"/></noscript>
<noscript><img src="http://theflooringgirl.com/wp-content/themes/theme/images/delete-Purple.png" alt="search slide" class="delete"/></noscript>

Mark - Yes, it could be due to plugins..I've added some and deactivated etc, But, I personally did not do anything to the codes.
It did create a search box, BTW (not a new page).
Would this sort of thing be in the .htaccess file? maybe I can look at the file on the other site. (that site is new/barely been touched). I'm just not sure though what I'm looking for.

It might be a coding / plugin issue - it looks like you're using some plugins to load code on the site - when you clicked on the search button, what happened - it would take you to a search page, or a search box would open somewhere on the current page?
I think you may want to check your plugins - was something disabled? Does it need to be updated? Was it updated and no longer compatible with the wordpress you're running? That might be the direction to go in.

Easiest thing to do is to call your designer.
Have you tried Adsense for Search? It produces killer income on my sites. If showing some ads above the SERPs is OK then you might make some nice money.

Why does a site that is worse than mine by every objective measure I can find, keep outranking me in search?
I’ve been working on educating myself about SEO all day, again. All-Star Telescope up in Canada. We have a competitor that consistently ranks #1 and I don't get it. Their site is full of duplicate content (straight copy and paste from the manufacturer site). They don't have any meaningful blog or video content to add relevance or value to their site. We have higher page authority, higher domain authority, and they keyword analyzer in moz says that our page is higher quality than the the competitors page. Our site is slow, but theirs is slower. I can’t find a single metric on any tool (ubbersuggest, Moz, ahrefs, semrush) that says Telescopes Canada is a better site, or has a better NexStar 8SE product page (a popular telescope). Here’s the link to Telescope Canada’s page for their Celestron 8SE: https://telescopescanada.ca/products/celestron-nexstar-8se-computerized-telescope-11069?_pos=1&_sid=f0aa91cc2&_ss=r Here’s a link to the Celestron 8SE page from the manufacturer website: https://www.celestron.com/products/nexstar-8se-computerized-telescope?_pos=1&_sid=56abdabd4&_ss=r#description Telescopes Canada has just copied and pasted. There is no original content aside from adding the shipping and return policy to the tab, and having some options for selecting accessories on the page. Here is our page: https://all-startelescope.com/products/celestron-nexstar-8se Our titles are good, our metadata is good (but I don’t think that’s been a serious ranking factor for about ten years). The text is original, it’s relevant, we have healthy internal links to the page. We have invensted in some excellent blog content, we’re adding new products to the website so that we rank for more keywords. All of those things are helping, but I fundamentally don’t understand why Telescopes Canada is #1 almost across the board on every key product in our market. There is something that I’m not seeing here, something that isn't being captured by the tools that I have. Is it simple the fact that they get more traffic? Is that why some people go and buy traffic? Can you see any metric, any tool in your toolbox that indicates why they rank at the top, or even higher than we do for in these search terms specific to that product: Celestron NexStar 8SE

NexStar 8SE
Celestron NexStar 8SE Canada
NexStar 8SE Canada We've worked with two highly ranked SEO's to try and figure this out, one in Canada, and one in the USA. I haven't seen a confidence inspiring answer from either of them. Posting on a forum is a bit of an act of desperation, I'll continue to work the problem, but it's discouraging to see the leader in my industry look like he's just phoning it in with his website.1 -
Bigcommerce only allows us to have https for our store only, not the other pages on our site, so we have a mix of https and http, how is this hurting us and what's the best way to fix?
So we aren't interested in paying a thousand dollars a month just to have https when we feel it's the only selling point of that package, so we have https for our store and the rest of the site blogs and all are http. I'm wondering if this would count as duplicate content or give us some other unforeseen penalty due to the half way approach of https being implemented. If this is hurting us, what would you recommend as a solution?

Hi guys, Recently I migrated a site from Drupal to Wordpress. I didn't contemplated the URL's will be different on Wordpress. Actually I have moren than 500 (the site has around 5000 pages) page not found issues on WMT and Moz. It because articles that has accents (spanish site) and symbols had wrong URLs in Drupal and right now in Wordpress that pages are not working.

Mobile site is not ranking in the mobile search results
I posted last month about problems with a mobile site, which is served from a separate URL (m.mydomain.com) as currently responsive design is not an option. The problem was that the mobile site was being returned in the desktop index along with the desktop site, and the desktop site was being returned in the mobile index instead of the mobile site. I have therefore implemented rel=canonical and rel=alternate as is advised by Google, but this has stopped the desktop site from appearing in the mobile index, but hasn't caused the mobile site to rank instead. What should I do now? One idea I have is to remove the rel=canonical and rel=alternate links so that the desktop site ranks in the mobile index again. There is a redirect in place anyway so when people click on a desktop link from a mobile search, they will still be redirected to the mobile equivalent. I could then set the m.mydomain.com to noindex to stop it from being returned in the desktop results and potentially causing duplicate content issues? What do you think about this as a work around?

What is the value of having an HTML sitemap on site?
For years now whenever we recreate a site we always set up both an xml sitemap and an html sitemap page. Stupid question maybe - but what is the value to having an html sitemap on site?

What is the best way to find missing alt tags on my site (site wide - not page by page)?
I am looking to find all the missing alt tags on my site at once. I have a FF extension that use to do it page by page, but my site is huge and that will take forever. Thanks!!

Multiple site in one? Recommendations?
I have 2 companies that essential do the same thing. They have different names and different domain names. One is a USA company and the other is a South American Company. My intnent was to create a single site with both english and spanish content and then create a english home page and a spanish homepage. I was hoping to direct the spanish domain name to the spanish homepage and the english to the english homepage. This way I will only have one site to maintain - one ecommerce site to maintain and can direct teh links to a single site - although they will essentially be kinda different. My question is... what are the pluses and minuses of doing this? Would I better creating 2 separate sites? is there going to be an issue with google maybe seeing duplicate content although the pages are seperate for each language? Any other considerations that I just wasnt smart enough to think of?
