H1 tag proper uses
-
Ok I see this happening all of the time. I get my hands on a new website and there are one of four header tag issues:
1. There are no H1 tags at all
2. There are multiple H1 tags on the same page
3. Every page has an identical H1 tag
4. Header tags are used all out of order
Do any of these have a negative impact on rankings? I've always tried to get one H1 tag on each page, have it be the first header tag, and make it unique to each page. Is this a waste of itme? Could improper header tag use hurt a website?

Content, alt tags, anchor text to internal pages are always favorites : )
-
So that means baisicly that the H1 is part of the design session and no longer part (no longer also part )of the SEO sessions.
So is there any on-page SEO element still important for ranking ? as it looks like only content and links from outside sources are the only things that counts.

great links

Hs have little influence on rankings at this moment. However, as for good writing practice, the use of a single H1 tag as the first Header tag is always recommended for best practice. H1s should not all be the same and should represent the page contents so the reader has a visual cue that (s)he is on the correct page.

Latest SEOmoz correlation data showed that h1 use is not a significant ranking factor (or at least not as a significant ranking factor) as once thought. I'll try and dig that up for you.
UPDATE - Here's the links I was thinking of - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-vs-bing-correlation-analysis-of-ranking-elements - and - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-biggest-seo-mistakes-seomoz-has-ever-made - BONUS - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/bing-vs-google-prominence-of-ranking-elements
Matt Cutts has done a video on this as well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIn5qJKU8VM
Basically use the where it makes sense, I try to avoid it in the logo of the page and have just one h1 text header, but there have been times when a couple more may have made sense.

Hi Dan,
you can see a Matt Cutts video about this (see the attachment). In my opinion it's better to focus on one H1 per page in order to focus the attention of the crawler on only few main keywords. All H1 have to be different. Take care about pagination, since you can easly duplicate meta tags and H1. In order to avoid it, use the meta FOLLOW,NOINDEX and use the canonical tag.

I have not seen negative impact due to H1 tag as much as I have seen positive. H1 tag optimization used to be popular optimization technique few years ago until lately it has been downgraded in priority by search engines. The top ranking factors are -
-
domain authority
-
link quality and quantity
-
social signals
-
title tag keyword usage
-
Anchor text from backlinks

Note- Keyword is title is way more important that keyword is H1 tag.

Good question - I'm also interested in getting an answer on this. I am also trying to get one single h1 tag, unique, on each page.

Should I add no-follow tags to my widget links?
Matt Cutts recommended in a video in 2013 to add rel="nofollow" on widget links that link back to your website. Some background of my company: We're a software company for website chat. There's a 'powered by' link in our widgets that links back from our users' websites to our website. Currently these are all follow links. I checked out the links of our competitors, and it seems none of them have no follow on their widget backlinks. This, together with the fact that the video is quite old and information on this issue rather scarce, makes me doubt whether we should change our widget backlinks to no follow. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Key Word Stuffing and Alt Tags
A site I manage is mostly images on our main landing pages and very little text based content. And many of the images are used across multiple landing pages which we're trying to optimize for different keywords. My problem is trying to use best practices for images and yet at the same time rank well for different keywords. How can I optimize for certain keywords, when the majority of "content" is likely coming from image file name and alt tags which have the EXACT SAME images across multiple landing pages. Hope that makes sense? I do have SOME text on the landing pages. Here's an example of one of the landing pages... remove the XXX in the url (I don't want this page to get indexed some how): XXXkidecals.com/product-category/school-labels/XXX There's probably 90 words describing the content of the category page. And there's about 50 images. If you think the ratio of content landing words to images is fine. What do you suggest in terms of Alt Tags -- do I use any keywords?

Canonical tags required when redirecting?
Hello, My client bought a new domain and he wants it to be the main domain of his company. His current domain though has been online for 10 years and ranks pretty well on a few keywords. I feel it is necessary to redirect the old domain to the new one to take advantage of its ranking and avoid any broken links. The sites are exactly the same. Same sections and same content. Is it necessary to place canonical tags on one of the sites to avoid duplicate content/sites? Any thoughts? Thanks

Google tagged URL an overly-dynamic URL?
I'm reviewing my campaign, and spotted the overly-dynamic URL box showing a few links. Reviewing it, they are my Google Tagged URLs (utm_source, utm_medium_utm_campaign etc) I've turned some internal links to Google Tagged URLs but should these cause concern?

Alt tags
What options do I have if all my images are pulled in by tags background images? It's a customized CMS and the designer put all images in the CSS so he would have more control over image size. I would like to somehow add description elements to the alt tags Thank, Eric
