H1 tag proper uses
-
Ok I see this happening all of the time. I get my hands on a new website and there are one of four header tag issues:
1. There are no H1 tags at all
2. There are multiple H1 tags on the same page
3. Every page has an identical H1 tag
4. Header tags are used all out of order
Do any of these have a negative impact on rankings? I've always tried to get one H1 tag on each page, have it be the first header tag, and make it unique to each page. Is this a waste of itme? Could improper header tag use hurt a website?

Content, alt tags, anchor text to internal pages are always favorites : )
-
So that means baisicly that the H1 is part of the design session and no longer part (no longer also part )of the SEO sessions.
So is there any on-page SEO element still important for ranking ? as it looks like only content and links from outside sources are the only things that counts.

great links

Hs have little influence on rankings at this moment. However, as for good writing practice, the use of a single H1 tag as the first Header tag is always recommended for best practice. H1s should not all be the same and should represent the page contents so the reader has a visual cue that (s)he is on the correct page.

Latest SEOmoz correlation data showed that h1 use is not a significant ranking factor (or at least not as a significant ranking factor) as once thought. I'll try and dig that up for you.
UPDATE - Here's the links I was thinking of - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-vs-bing-correlation-analysis-of-ranking-elements - and - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-biggest-seo-mistakes-seomoz-has-ever-made - BONUS - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/bing-vs-google-prominence-of-ranking-elements
Matt Cutts has done a video on this as well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIn5qJKU8VM
Basically use the where it makes sense, I try to avoid it in the logo of the page and have just one h1 text header, but there have been times when a couple more may have made sense.

Hi Dan,
you can see a Matt Cutts video about this (see the attachment). In my opinion it's better to focus on one H1 per page in order to focus the attention of the crawler on only few main keywords. All H1 have to be different. Take care about pagination, since you can easly duplicate meta tags and H1. In order to avoid it, use the meta FOLLOW,NOINDEX and use the canonical tag.

I have not seen negative impact due to H1 tag as much as I have seen positive. H1 tag optimization used to be popular optimization technique few years ago until lately it has been downgraded in priority by search engines. The top ranking factors are -
-
domain authority
-
link quality and quantity
-
social signals
-
title tag keyword usage
-
Anchor text from backlinks
http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors
Note- Keyword is title is way more important that keyword is H1 tag.

Good question - I'm also interested in getting an answer on this. I am also trying to get one single h1 tag, unique, on each page.

Htaccess - Redirecting TAG or Category pages
Hello Fellow Moz's, We have an issue redirecting some /TAG and /Category pages to inner pages. As an example we use: RedirectMatch 301 /category/Sample-Category(.*) https://OurDomain.com.au/New-Page//$1 That works well. The issue is we have other categories and tags that are named similar to /Sample-Category As an example, if we try to redirect /Sample-Category-1 to /New-Page-1 - it will not work, and redirects to /New-Page I assume this is because /Sample-Category is already being redirected, so anything after /Sample-Category like -1 or -2 or -3 etc, will not be recognized. Anyone know of a workaround?

Use a language extension or a keyword as an extension?
If it's technically necessary to add an extension to a domain URL... Should I use brand.nl/nl or should I use brand.nl/keyword as the homepage? In my opinion it's better to use the language extension as it is much easier for other websites to link to. The client could make a separate page with content about the keyword. I also think it's much more difficult for direct traffic to access the website with this long URL. Any other thoughts?

Is this all that is needed for a 'canonical' tag?
Hello, I have a Joomla site. I have put in a plugin to make the page source show: eg. <link href="[http://www.ditalia.com.au/designer-fabrics-designer-fabric-italian-material-and-french-lace](view-source:http://www.ditalia.com.au/designer-fabrics-designer-fabric-italian-material-and-french-lace)" rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" /> Is this all that is need to tell the search engines to ignore the any other links or indexed pages with a url which is created automatically by the system before the SEF urls are initiated?

Canonical tags required when redirecting?
Hello, My client bought a new domain and he wants it to be the main domain of his company. His current domain though has been online for 10 years and ranks pretty well on a few keywords. I feel it is necessary to redirect the old domain to the new one to take advantage of its ranking and avoid any broken links. The sites are exactly the same. Same sections and same content. Is it necessary to place canonical tags on one of the sites to avoid duplicate content/sites? Any thoughts? Thanks

HTML5 Nav Tag Issue - Be Aware
In checking my internal links with GWT, it is apparent that links within the nav tag in HTML5 are discounted by Google as "internal links" This could have major repercussions for designing your internal link structure for SEO purposes. I was surprised to see this result, as I have never seen it discussed. Anyone else notice this, or have any alternative views?

Use of subdomains, subdirectories or both?
Hello, i would like your advice on a dilemma i am facing. I am working a new project that is going to release soon, thats a network of users with personal profiles seperated in categories for example lets say the categories are colors. So let say i am a member and i belong in red color categorie and i got a page where i update my personal information/cv/resume as well as a personal blog thats on that page. So the main site is giving the option to user to search for members by the criteria of color. My first idea is that all users should own a subdomain (and this is how its developed so far) thats easy to use and since the domain name is really small (just 3 letters) i believe subdomain worth since personal site will be easy to remember. My dilemma is should all users own a subdomain, a subdirectory or both and if both witch one should be the canonical? Since it said that search engines treat subdomains as different stand-alone sites, whats best for the main site? to show multiple search results with profiles in subdomains or subdirectories? What if i use both? meaning in search results i use search directory url for each profile while same time each profile owns a subdomains as well? and if so which one should be the canonical? Thanks in advance, C

Not using a robot command meta tag
Hi SEOmoz peeps. Was doing some research on robot commands and found a couple major sites that are not using them. If you check out the code for these: http://www.amazon.com http://www.zappos.com http://www.zappos.com/product/7787787/color/92100 http://www.altrec.com/ You fill not find a meta robot command line. Of course you need the line for any noindex, nofollow, noarchive pages. However for pages you want crawled and indexed, is there any benefit for not having the line at all? Thanks!

H1 or H2 for Post Title SEO
I know people suggest having a H1 with your keyword on your page somewhere to help with SEO. My current wordpress theme has the post title as a H2. Is there a big difference in using H1 vs H2
