SEO Ecommerce Keywords
-
Hi guys got a question regarding ecommerce seo
do you think its a better idea to target more long tail terms and try get links directly to product pages, brand pages and categories.
Rather than focus on short keywords that do bring in good traffic but are very broad, i will prob do both, but i would like a second opinion please about other users strategies
thanks

Hi,
I am having the same difficulty trying to find a good strategy for long tail SEO for our ecommerce clients, considering that it is difficult to have long content on our product pages as it is not recommended, as well as the fact that it is quite difficult to compete with the likes of amazon, walmart, and even your own distributors! As such, I am thinking that to target long tail keywords, it would best be wise to create a blog consisting of different content and media that targets your specific keywords AND within an article for example, link back to your product page within the long tail anchor text your targeting to the product page everytime. In addition, you could also take advantage of testimonials and reviews for targeting long tail keywords on your product page. Hope that helps.
Thanks

We have a retail store and ecommerce performance is judged by the month, quarter year etc.
I focus on local long tail first followed by the short tail with goals of winning the 1-3 spot (lots of 1's) for both.
Then I want to win long tail national followed by short tail national (national meaning nationwide outside of our state).
Shorter tail (category) type keywords are difficult for us to rank for but we are gaining on it over time as our domain authority improves.
Link building is high on our agenda for 2013.

I personally try to ensure that my product pages are up to date and are showing up in Google Shopping and for specific product name searches.
I then try to gear my main category pages up for more generic key words searches so I can try and capture customers looking to browse at the first point of the buying cycle. Ideally you would capture everything but I guess if starting from a standing start you have to prioritise.
For reference, I initially prioritised the specific product pages over general category pages as these were more likely to bring in an immediate sale. If these product pages weren't ranking properly but generic broad searches were doing ok, people may do their research on my website but when it comes to buying would find one of my competitors.
I'm finding E-commerce SEO quite tough due to the broad amount of products we sell - its difficult to go after everything. I guess consistency and utilising white hat techniques on everything you do is the way forward.

Hey Will,
It's a broad question, can you give an example as there are really no general answers here.
Long tail generally is easier and more specific (likely to convert) but at lower volumes
Broad keywords are weak with regards to convert and competative but do the numbers
Usually, you could start with the broad and work out the long tail:
- Widgets
- Green Widgets
- Cheap Green Widgets
- Buy Cheap Green Widgets
- Buy Cheap Green Widgets Online
- Buy Cheap Green Widgets Online Free Delivery
- etc
Often, long tail or related keywords are better suited to another post that is intended to provide information but also funnel users to your product page. Likewise, it is a damn site easier to get links to that kind of informative, blog content than it is to product pages.
Drop in some examples, happy to run off a few ideas.
Cheers!
Marcus

How to rank for a keyword
Hi guys, I'm looking to rank a new blog for a search term which we currently already rank #1 for. I want to create a blog which provides a better solution to a searchers query and knock our current #1 page for this new one. Is there a way to do this simply without losing the real-estate the currently ranked #1 page has already accumulated? Or is just a matter of working on this new blog to find it's own way to the top? Thanks in advance, James

Ecommerce store on subdomain - danger of keyword cannibalization?
Hi all, Scenario: Ecommerce website selling a food product has their store on a subdomain (store.website.com). A GOOD chunk of the URLs - primarily parameters - are blocked in Robots.txt. When I search for the products, the main domain ranks almost exclusively, while the store only ranks on deeper SERPs (several pages deep). In the end, only one variation of the product is listed on the main domain (ex: Original Flavor 1oz 24 count), while the store itself obviously has all of them (most of which are blocked by Robots.txt). Can anyone shed a little bit of insight into best practices here? The platform for the store is Shopify if that helps. My suggestion at this point is to recommend they all crawling in the subdomain Robots.txt and canonicalize the parameter pages. As for keywords, my main concern is cannibalization, or rather forcing visitors to take extra steps to get to the store on the subdomain because hardly any of the subdomain pages rank. In a perfect world, they'd have everything on their main domain and no silly subdomain. Thanks!

Lightboxes and SEO
Do lightboxes (AKA popup boxes when you click "learn more" type CTAs) have any negative effect on SEO? We are looking at revamping our sites to have more of a tiled approach, and a lightbox with summary content popping out with additional CTAs, directing to pages with more information or free trial pages. Is there any downside to this approach from an organic perspective? is there anything specific to keep in mind when creating these if not?

Pagination & SEO
Hi In one of my other Q&A's someone mentioned I may need to look at pagination. For instance, are these pages counted as 'new' pages in Google's eyes when clicking on pagination? http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/plastic-storage-boxes http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/plastic-storage-boxes#productBeginIndex:30&orderBy:5&pageView:list& Does anyone have any advice on what I could do? It's not something I have had much experience with. Thank you Becky

What Constitutes Keyword Stuffing?
Greeting MOZ Community: I have been attempting to add certain keywords phrases to the home page text of our real estate web site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). When I check the keyword density and look at the keyword cloud, the frequency of certain terms appear substantially higher than they should be (see attached keyword cloud and keyword density chart. Certain terms like "office space" have a 5 or 6% frequency which seems high. Last thing we need is a Panda penalty. When I viewed the code for the home page (see enclosed), I noticed HREF tags, SRE tags and ALT tags repeating certain keyword phrases, driving up their density. I have attached a keyword cloud for the home page of a competitor and the use of language seems more diverse. Does Google take the text in these various tags into account? I know the ALT tag is important for SEO, but how about the others? Does the use of text in the tags for this page make the overall page look spammy? Also, there are text and tags for the carousel in the home page that appear in the code for the home page. If this code were somehow concealed, would we be better off from an SEO perspective? Thanks, Alan pkM7CZG 1DFFMZ0

Shopify and multiple stores for seo
Hi, We have a potential client who has multiple stores targeting different countries using Shopify. He has set the domains for specific countries using geo targeting in webmaster tools. Anybody had any experience on how fool proof this is? (all the sites have the exact same products/content on them) Thanks

Recently we realised that our client's SERPs were almost always lower on Bing.com and Bing (canada) when comparing with Google.com and Google.ca We want to know if there's different ranking or blocking factors for Bing and if someone had similar expriences. It would also be appreciated if you have releavent and trusted information on this topic, from blog posts, forums, etc. What are your thoughts on this?
