Massive decreases in traffic
-
Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space.
Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were:
kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k)
only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k)
(semrush traffic data attached)
Both sites have great quality content and social signals.
The only thing i can think of is a over-optimization of anchor text, and types of links.
-
Have you review your backlinks in Open Site Explorer? Some of them look a little fishy, especially the ones for kriskris with the anchor text "lose weight fast" from sights that are mainly in Chinese and also have links to viagra and other such sites (http://www.xshz.com.cn/shownews.asp?id=220 for example).
-
Check out your Google Analytics data and just look at the organic search traffic. Can you pinpoint any major drops? Correlate those dates to known algorithm updates and that should give you a starting point.
If the drops correlate to Apr 24, May 25 or Oct 5 then you're likely dealing with Penguin and the backlinks are your problem.
If they correlate to Panda dates then start looking for duplicate and thin content issues which are the main component of Panda.
I'm guessing this is Panda though. I looked at a couple of your articles on kriskris.com and there are multiple copies across the web. Are these articles originally yours? If not, then you won't be able to rank a site in the age of Panda with duplicated content. If so, are you intentionally syndicating them?
-
Yes your quite right, I would look for other factors for this, have you been losing links, have you picked up any bad links, you could start here by checking : http://www.linkdetox.com/ .
-
If you actually look at the traffic graph from semrush the declines haven't been recent, they have both been in decline since the start of the year. What reasons besides the fact that their backlink profile may be over optimized with exact match anchors, is there for this decline?
The sites have great content, good social media signals (kriskris has over 16,000 followers!) I'm just surprised quality sites like these are getting absolutely slammed.
-
I have seen a very similar issue also, however the last week traffic was beginning to start to climb again only for the new Google update which you can be 100% sure has not finished yet, I think you just have to weather the storm for a little while longer and wait to see where the dice will fall after the completion of the update.
-
For those of us that have not received warnings on WMT, I'd suggest you wait about a week to see if your rankings recover.
There was some sort of small update or change in Google's algorithm and one of my sites dropped 30-40% and just recovered about 20% traffic.
Sometimes these fluctuations happen, don't panic just yet!
-
Those are huge decreases....looks like Google is controlling cash flow into businesses. I just fell from #2 to #5 for my main key term. I will have to start using their PPC.

What's the best way to use redirects on a massive site consolidation
We are migrating 13 websites into a single new domain and with that we have certain pages that will be terminated or moved to a new folder path so we need custom 301 redirects built for these. However, we have a huge database of pages that will NOT be changing folder paths and it's way too many to write custom 301's for. One idea was to use domain forwarding or a wild card redirect so that all the pages would be redirected to their same folder path on the new URL. The problem this creates though is that we would then need to build the custom 301s for content that is moving to a new folder path, hence creating 2 redirects on these pages (one for the domain forwarding, and then a second for the custom 301 pointing to a new folder). Any ideas on a better solution to this?

Do I miss traffic (thus, page value) by using the GWMT Parameter Handling Tool?
I'm working through duplicate content issues. The tracking code or the session id in the URL is being recognized as a different page than the original. Example: www.example.com is dup content to www.example.com?_nk=x&ad=y&_ga=z, which is tied to a marketing campaign If my setup in the URL parameter tool is set to: Effect = None Crawl = Representative URL, then do I: 1. Miss all the traffic being driven to the ?_nk page?

2. With a Rep URL, there still would be two indexed listings: the .com & the .com?_nk...right? Neither is good. Redirects of all the URLs is not an option b/c there are hundreds of these that would need to be redirected. And I also don't want to slow down page load time with excessive redirects, which has been the case when adding 100+ redirects for the recent website migration we did.0 -
Community Discussion - Are annotations an overlooked avenue for driving traffic from YouTube?
Happy Friday, Q&A friends! This week's discussion question comes from Amir Jaffari's YouMoz post from Thursday, January 28. Amir explains how he was able to use annotations to massively increase his YouTube videos' views without using ads, and raise his annotation CTR 22,400%. Have you tested annotations to see if they dramatically improve conversion rates? What were the results? What other strategies have you tried?

Big hit to traffic a while ago, and slow recovery. Is there anything we've missed?
www.movehub.com We took a big hit to our organic traffic when we implemented an HTML form which included a list of every country in the world, twice. This rolled out onto every page on our website. And it got indexed by Google (webmaster tools showed our content keywords as being those from the form occurring 9000+ times on the site) We've fixed this and the content keywords are back to normal, however our traffic has not yet fully recovered. Is there anything on our site that you think could be sending spam signals to Google, or could be impeding our organic traffic growth?

Site rankings steadily decreasing - do I need to remove links?
Since mid-April, our ranking have been steadily declining. Our two main keywords are 'nuts and bolts' and 'bolts and nuts'. 'nuts and bolts' dropped from 7th to 46th in May and has recovered slightly to 28th, and 'bolts and nuts' moved from 7th to 16th, and is today 24th. Ranking on keywords we specialise in have fared better, but they're fairly niche. 'bsw bolts' has moved from 2nd to 4th, and 'imperial bolts' has moved from 1st to 4th. I think my link profile is the issue. I don't think we've been penalised by Penguin directly (I may be wrong, I don't think we'd be page 2 on such a competitive term as 'bolts and nuts' after Penguin if we had been penalised.), but I think what's happened is that sites that link to us have been penalised, resulting in a knock on effect. Does that sound right? Here's my link profile: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.thomassmithfasteners.com</a> I've been slowly building relevant links with prospective customers and kept up a very basic social media profile - just the odd blog post and sharing on Facebook and Twitter. Do I need to delete all the directory links? We do have links from directories that don't look fantastic, more are shown in Webmaster Tools than are listed here. Some of the directories no longer seem to exist, I take it I don't need to do anything and Google will catch up in those cases. Should I attempt to remove (or disavow) all links with names like best-directory etc? Or should I just concentrate on building better links? I'm not sure where to start! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Stephen

Influence on CTR for high traffic keyword in url and redirect
I currently dominate on my site for a very high traffic keyword. My url contains this keyword in it along with the word "Free" in the beginning. Lets say my keyword is "This Keyword" then my url would be freethiskeyword.com. I rank 3rd for this keyword and generates me about 8k on a low month. I was just able to obtain my main keyword as my sole URL through an auction for a measly 2,000.00. (Very Excited about this). So now I have the URL thiskeyword.com What I want to know is what kind of influence can I expect with my new URL have in CTR. Since it is a high traffic keyword is there a automatic "Trust" factor that is involved and will users tend to click on thiskeyword.com as apposed to freethiskeyword.com? My Second Question I am torn as to what I should do with this new URL. Should I redirect my old URL to my new URL and keep both pointing to the same site? or should I try and dominate my niche and build a new site entirely. Since I currently make about 8k a month for third, if I were to build a separate site and be able to obtain 1st place for my new keyword that would generate me 2 amounts in income based on stats. CTR based on http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2049695/Top-Google-Result-Gets-36.4-of-Clicks-Study freethiskeyword.com = 8k/m for 3rd based on 10% of clicks (currently) thiskeyword.com = 24k/m for 1st based on 36% of clicks (in theory) If I keep each site separate and be able to have one site at 3rd and the other at 1st then I would be making about 32k a month. If I redirect my old url to my new url then I would only have 1st place (if I make it to first of course) and that would only make me 24k a month. It seems to me I should keep these sites separate to generate more income. I am torn what I should do. Also with the EMD penalty I am afraid to 301 my site to my new URL since it is my exact keyword as apposed to my current one. I am defiantly branded as "Free This Keyword" so moving it to thiskeyword.com could hurt me more than help (at least I think so) What you think?
