Regular Expression / Wildcard Redirect Situation
-
I am dealing with an interesting situation. Here's what's going on:
Current URLs Example1:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1-1.htmlCanonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.htmlNew URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
Current URLs Example2:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1-1.htmlCanonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.htmlNew URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789.htmlI want to make sure all variations of the above URL redirect to the new url. What wildcard 301 redirect / regular expression can I use to tackle these ?

Hi Nakul,
Forgive me if this is too simplistic...
The following rewrite rules should cover the examples you provided:
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234.html http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234- http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234+ http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789.htmlWe just need to escape the special characters (period, hyphen and plus sign).
This should cover the examples you provided, and no need for any elaborate RegEx patterns. Of course, if there are variants your example doesn't mention, things could get more complicated. (I'm also assuming here you're on an Apache environment.)
If I've misunderstood your question or the situation is more complicated than your example demonstrates, let me know.
Thanks,
Mike

I have over 12,000 permanent redirects. Is this okay?
Hey guys, I have moved my website to http://www to https:/www. I use a plugin called Really Simple SSL on Wordpress. Now I have 12,000 permanent 301 redirects. It seems like my whole site has been moved. Is this the right way to do it? I am quite new to SEO and I quite don't understand if this is good or bad. From my intuition, it seems like a lot of redirects for Google bot to crawl through. Is there a better way to move to HTTPS without all these redirects? Thank you. Paul

Splitting an expression or not ?
Hello, I am wondering if to write and rank I should slipt my expression. Example : "Alsace bike tour ", should I write a paragraph with keywords that match "Alsace" and then a paragraph with keywords related to "bike tours" or should I write something with keywords related to "alsace bike tour" I imagine that when it is something that exist I don't need to split it for example " la loire velo" because it is a network of bike path in the Loire valley but for other things like above I do need to split it ? An input on that would be great. Thank you,

302 Redirect of www. version of a site - Pros/Cons
Hi, I am considering making the 301 redirect from the domain to a 302 temporary redirect. Currently if a user lands on "www" version of the site, they are redirected to the non "www" version. But after the redirect, they will land on an external webpage (so if a user lands on the "www" version, they are redirected to a different website, not related to my domain). Reason I'm considering this is because I have received a large number of spammy backlinks on the "www" version of the site (negative seo). So I'm hoping that the temporary redirect will help me recover. Your thoughts on this: 1. Is this the best way to do a 302 redirect (redirecting the www version to an external domain)? 2. Will the redirect help the main domain recover, considering all spammy backlinks are pointing to the www version? 3. What are the pros/cons, if any? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Howard

Canonicalization interact with 301 redirects?
This is a interesting one I think. I have recently taken down some product list pages from our website www.towelsrus.co.uk. These have canonicalisation in place to deal with pages where a query string is generated depending on the search criteria. When I put a 301 redirect in place the target page redirects fine, however webmaster tools then errors with 404 on all canonicalised pages. Is this correct behaviour and how do we get over this?

How do you find all of your 301 redirects?
I would like a full list of 301 redirects that we have on our site. Is there a way to export it? I tried Bing Webmaster tools and the list was incomplete. We use IIS. Any ideas?

Keyword/Content Consistency
My question is: If you have a keyword that is searched more when it's spelled wrong then when it's spelled right - what do you do? Do you do the misspelled word or keep true to the spelling and say oh well to SEO? Also - Along the same lines of that question: What if you have a keyword that has a - in the middle of it. For instance: website and web-site (this isn't the keyword just an example). and drupal website is searched more then drupal web-site but wordpress web-site is searched more then wordpress website. Technically website is the correct spelling and way to write it, but people put web-site (again not the case in reality - just an example).
