"Bad" backlinks
-
Hello dear community,
I am new here and quite new to SEO. Perhaps someone could give me a hint on a following question:
Which tools can help me to track "bad" baclinks, e. g. links which would rather downgrade my SEO performance?
-
Thanks for your replies! Gee, I thought things are easier
@ Marie no I havent got a google warning nor were my search results downgraded by penguin update.
After talking with a few SEO companies and receiving astronomical offers I have decided to keep trying myself.
A am currently doing a lot of different activities and after on-page optimizing am trying to improve backlinking.
I have reached great results over the last few week, but I am constantly thinking that I might make some dummy mistakesSince I have heard that google is downgrading or even punishing sites with backlinks it considers bad, I thought there might be an eays way to check it before problems occur.
@Tom Thanks, I have found LinkDetox just before posting my question here and have just tried it out. Something sort of I have meant with my question. Unfortunately, for a buck it doesn't provide a full information.
@Irving Thanks, an interesting tool. Checking every single domain linking to me should be quite time consuming. Strange that the engine would report "essex" positive - I hope that google itself is not that stupid.

I ran a LinkDetox report and it found 61 toxic back links and 960 suspicious back links to www.audiobooksonline.com. We have NOT received any messages from Google WMT about bad links.
According to the report I should immediately get rid of the 61 toxic links. Can our robots.txt file be used to disallow these links?
Although NOT included in the LinkDetox report, Google WMT shows 30,198 back links from wn.com. Google Analytics shows we have received no visitors from wn.com (1/1/2012 - 1/25/2013). I have no idea why wn.com would be linking to us. What benefit do they get?

At the risk of sounding cliche, I would say that the best tool I use is my brain.
Any automated tool is going to have some false negatives and false positives.
I think the answer to your question though lies in why you are going through this type of audit.
If you've got an unnatural links warning then you've got to take every link that even smells slightly unnatural and toss it.
If you think you've been affected by Penguin (organic traffic drop that coincides with Apr 24, May 25 or Oct 5) then go after links that you have made using keyword anchor text.
If you're just trying to clean things up, then it's debatable on what to do. If you prune a bunch of links you could do more harm than good. I would start by looking at anchor text abuse and remove some of those links. But I think it's impossible to give general advice on what to do for your site without knowing how you have done SEO in the past.
If you've never engaged in link building but have naturally earned links to your site then I wouldn't even bother trying to clean things up. Even the whitest of white sites will have a few spammy links. But if you didn't make them then I wouldn't worry about them.

here is a very handy tool.
http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm
it flags sites that are linked to on the site that is linking to you (you enter the URL of site that is linking to you)
you need to look through the links for false positives, because "essex" will trigger "sex" for instance.

A really good one to start off with is LinkDetox.
You can pay for a full crawl of your site's backlinks with a single tweet.
It will break your backlinks into three categories: toxic, suspicious and healthy. Healthy are obviously A-OK. Toxic are links from sites that have been deindexed - these are clear-cut "bad badlinks".
The suspicious links come in a variety of categories themselves, indicating why the tool thinks they are suspicious. Some links might be bad, but some might be OK. It's important, therefore, to read through the tool's reasoning for making it suspicious and see if you agree, as well as cross referencing it with some SEOMoz metrics such as PA/DA.
Hope you have fun with the tool - for the price of one tweet, I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Backlink question
When I create a website for my clients, I always put our website link in the footer of the description, just to say 'powered by ieatdoorframes' with a link to our website. On SEMrush, its showing as a negative backlink with the reason 'compound', suggesting its a 'money term'. I add this link as I've had success getting new work from clients who like the site we built. I'm new to these terminologies and wondering what I should do?

How to analyze a backlink
My site has around 6k backlinks, which majority seem to be spammy. I understand the whole process to contact the webmaster, try to get them removed, and disavow them if you cannot get them deleted. 1. What are some main signs of spotting domains that generate negative SEO? 2. Time frame to clean up 6k links assuming 50% are bad? Currently we are looking are a service to take care of this for us, but from reading everything online it seems the only reliable way to do it would be manually. Any recommendations on this would be appreciated.

Bad Links to New Domain - Do I Disavow?
About 2 months ago a new client of mine bought a domain and we built him a nice new site; however, it appears the previous owner of the domain used some spammy SEO tactics. I've had to redirect about 30 pages and now I've found some spammy links. I've only discovered a few of them, but he doesn't have that many links yet so I'm wondering what kind of impact this will have. Is it worth disavowing a half dozen links? The sites are in Chinese and appear to be unmanaged link farms so getting the webmaster to remove them is unlikely. Also wondering what else is lurking out there that I haven't discovered yet... I suggested to the client we consider a different domain since the site is new, but he's become pretty attached to it. Any ideas?

Getting backlinks on a page using https
Our company got a backlink on a page with high DA but using https (https://developer.apple.com/internationalization/) more than 2 months ago. However, this particular backlink was never counted by Open Site Explorer or other backlink checker. I've contacted the Moz Helpdesk and they said they are having issues crawling https sites. So I'm wondering if anything I can do to make sure this backlink gets counted? Thanks.

Are sites that "smell of SEO" being demoted?
I'm working with a site owner who recently hired an SEO to work on just one particular type of keyword. It seems like the more work the SEO did, the lower the keyword gradually dropped. Granted, the "work" is pretty low quality - anchor texted bookmarks, comments and low quality articles. We're doing an experiment where we are going to disavow those links and see if the previous rankings return. Another site that I am consulting with has a lot of good natural links and then some anchor texted links, but from decent sources - some guest posts (on good sites - not a spammy site that exists only for guest posts) and some places where decent websites have agreed to link to the site. The anchor texted links do not make up very much of the overall anchor text. There is good diversity and lots of brand and url anchored links. It seems like the more the SEO does for this site, the more the rankings drop. And it's not all about anchor text. The SEO placed a link in a relevant directory, using the url as anchor...rankings dropped a little. They obtained an expired domain with relevant and very natural links and 301'd it to the new domain...rankings dropped several places. And so on. Occasionally the rankings will pop up a little, but overall it's a downward spiral. Check out this post by Gary Taylor. He did an experiment where he took an established site that was ranking well and threw some spammy links at it. To quote the article, 'every day goes by my ranking for the term “domains” is getting harder to maintain.' He recently tweeted that he has been removing and disavowing links and the rankings are returning. I was looking at searches for real estate related terms in different cities. In some cities, the top sites are ones that have ZERO obvious SEO done to them. There are sites ranking on page 3 that have been SEO'd, and not all of them have poor SEO. Many are what I would consider really well done. Some of the sites ranking on page 1 have under 10 links. There was one with 2 followed links and they were not from super authoritative sites! To complicate matters though, if you look at searches like "Toronto Real Estate Agents" some of the top sites have lots of keyword anchor texted links. Perhaps this should be a blog post rather than a Q&A, but I would love to hear some of your thoughts. My personal thought is that Google's main goal with Penguin and the unnatural links warnings is to make it so that not only is it not profitable to try to manipulate the SERPS, but that every time you try to do so, you potentially do your rankings harm. I used to say that Penguin could only affect a site on the date of a Penguin refresh, but I am thinking now that Google has managed to roll Penguin into the algorithm to some extent so that it can demote the majority of any work that smells of SEO. Thoughts?

Should we BackLink to Guest Post ?
Hi, I have been actively doing guest blogging for last few weeks . But the page authority , moz Rank and moz Trust of my guest posts appear 0 as those posts have their own pages on blogs with snippets of posts on home page. I wanted to ask if i should backlink to my guest posts to increase the authority, mR and mT of pages. Those posts are already appearing as backlinks in webmaster tools but if i backlink to my posts to increase mR and mT, then will it also increase the juice passed by backlinks in those posts to landing pages on my site ? Thanks,
