Anchor Tag around Table / Block
-
Our homepage (here) has four large promotional sections taking up most of the real estate. Each promo section has an image and styled text.
We want each promo section to link to the appropriate page, so we created the promo sections as and wrapped each
in an anchor. That works fine for users but I tried viewing our site in a text-only browser (Lynx) and couldn't follow those links! My fear is that GoogleBot can't follow them either and doesn't know what anchor text to pull.
So, my question: What's the best way to make this entire block clickable, but still have it crawlable by robots? Or is our current implementation ok?
For reference, here's a simplified version of the relevant code block:

All Diamonds

Jessica Simspon

Heck yes! Very grateful. Thank you!!

I don't think it's that big of a problem, but if you really want anchor text, you could try this: Use a javascript onclick event for the image instead of an anchor tag. Then turn the promotion title into a link:
-
onclick="javascript:location.href='link.html';">
Jessica Simspon
Extra 20% Off
Or if you don't want to use javascript, you could have 2 links:
-
Jessica Simspon
Extra 20% Off
[
style="float:left; margin-top:-XXpx;
position:relative; z-index:-2">](link)
Hope that helps!

Thank you! Last follow-up (promise): If we do it that way, there's no associated anchor text. But if we use alt-text on the image, that's less authoritative than the
and
tags we are using, plus it's duplicate content... Do you think that's a problem?

Thanks for the reply, Takeshi! That's pretty much what we are doing, I think... Can you help me understand better?
We are using CSS and a table structure to float the text and the CTA button on top of the image. Then the entire block is wrapped in an anchor so it's clickable. If only the image is inside the anchor, doesn't that mean the rest of the block won't click through to the destination?
Would rather not make the whole thing an image because that hurts our text/image ratio and makes our homepage even less SEO-friendly. But we still want the entire area to go to the destination URL.

One solution would be to make each of the promo sections an image (like http://i.imgur.com/sA8DFYk.png), then make the image a link. You can then use css to float some text on top of the image, or if you don't care, just make the whole thing an image. You could also separate out the product image from the grey background if you're feeling really nit picky.

Hi All, I use pagination (Rel=Prev , Rel=Next) and a canconical tag on my paginated pages and also on my View All page to point to my root page (Page 1). Citation/Business Directory Question...
A company I work for has two numbers... one for the std call centre and one for tracking SEO. Now, if local citation/business directory listings have the same address but different numbers, will this affect local/other SEO results? Any help is greatly appreciated! 🙂

Robots.txt Blocked Most Site URLs Because of Canonical
Had a bit of a "Gotcha" in Magento. We had Yoast Canonical Links extension which worked well , but then we installed Mageworx SEO Suite.. which broke Canonical Links. Unfortunately it started putting www.mysite.com/catalog/product/view/id/516/ as the Canonical Link - and all URLs with /catalog/productview/* is blocked in Robots.txt So unfortunately We told Google that the correct page is also a blocked page. they haven't been removed as far as I can see but traffic has certainly dropped. We have also , at the same time had some Site changes grouping some pages & having 301 redirects. Resubmitted site map & did a fetch as google. Any other ideas? And Idea how long it will take to become unblocked?

Anchor text questions - What are your thoughts?
Hi, I want to talk about anchor text and the effect it has on search engines (Good & Bad). Here is a fictitious example we can talk about: www.supercoolrunningsneakers.com Title Tag: Running Sneakers - The Super Trendy Running Trainers Keywords targeted: Running Sneakers, Running Trainers How would you vary your anchor text to target these terms? If you had 50 unique articles to play with how would you vary the anchor text using the articles? Would you push 25 articles at 'Running Sneakers' and the other 25 at 'Running Trainers' or would you link some articles using the domain name anchor text? Q: I'm guessing running 50 articles using anchor text 'Running Sneakers' would benefit the SERP's moe for that term then mixing it up with say 'Running Sneakers', 'Running Trainers' & 'Domain Name Links'. Cheers

How To Create Dynamic WordPress Tags
Does anyone know how to make WordPress "tag" pages automatically generate a description based on the posts included in the tag? I have a lot of tags, and most of them rank well for long tail keywords. However I have noticed that although they have a dynamically generated "title meta tag" they do not generate a "description meta tag". I know WordPress lets you customize the description for each tag, but I have way to many for that. I need the description meta to be auto generated from the posts that are being tagged, rather than not including one at all. Does anyone know how to do this?
