Another Footer Links question
-
I have reposted this as a new question as I posted in an old 'Answered' question but not had a reply.
Footer links
We have generated new business from links that we have on client sites linking back to us. The new client will call/email us saying "we see you did example.com website, which we like, would you mind quoting for a redesign our website". Without that link we may never have got that new piece of business.
We always ask the client if we can place on link on their website and they all say ok. We don't do this for purely for SEO. The only thing we have done previously is to include the link in the footer of every page on the client site, which we are now in the process of changing to being only the client home page.
With that in mind, is the following ok to do?
-
Place text/image link in footer of client home page
-
Link to be "nofollow" which goes to specific page on our own website e.g. oursite.com/portfolio/clientname.php
-
on oursite.com/portfolio/clientname.php page we link back to client's home page, again this would be a "nofollow"
-
-
i would make the long tail list based on your keyword research and have the main keyword in there
-
Irving, thanks for clarifying.
On our site we have portfolio pages for each client and that is what we will link to from the client's home page, so each link back will be a unique url and not a link back to our home page.
Regarding long tail link what kind of wording would you recommend / suggest, something like 'Website for Client Company designed by My Company'?
-
Thomas, I haven't had any negative feedback, this is more to do with getting things done appropriately and one thing we are acutely aware of is that the footer links back to us are on every client page which we are busy reviewing/correcting. This question is kind of the next step, to make sure what we are doing does/will not penalise the client site but still helps us a little
Like I said in my initial question we do get referrals from client sites because of the link we have in the footer.
-
Relevancy is better but not necessary. More importantly is that the site is quality, not penalized, not selling links and the link is not sitewide.
Also I would not use your main keyword term for link building - use a different long tail on each site and point to internal URLs and not your homepage if you have appropriate landing pages. Have the link in content if possible.
The only question I would have though, is if this is for traffic, why would it bring any volume of qualified traffic to your site if it's not the same niche?
-
I honestly would be careful a little bit about putting links in the footer. Now I know there's a lot of debate have regarding this question. Google does look at some of it as spamy if I recall correctly one penguin came out one of the things mentioned was Web agencies were hit when they placed their URL in the footer of the websites they made.
I would obviously use text in the footer so somebody can highlight it and either Google or copy and paste. Definitely agree with Irving do not use a photograph as you would have to link in that format For it to be effective simply write your name not in the link format.
If the customer does something relevant to what your company does then I would ask them for the link. And ask it to be placed somewhere in the body as a thank you or reference. Those would be ideals obviously the footer of course is still all right.
Have you been getting negative feedback from Google regarding using links in this fashion?
They would definitely not counted as much because like you said you're not in the same wheelhouse.
I hope I've been of some help,
Thomas

Thanks Irving. Is it ok to dofollow from client site homepage to our site even if client's site content is not relevant to our own e.g. different business sectors?
-
If you want to do this for SEO then link dofollow on their homepage only and use text not an image.
If it's for traffic then put it globally on the site (since you never know what page a user is coming in on) and nofollow the link.
Nofollow the links on your your own sites client page.

Why Links from Top Level Domains doesn't Pass Link Equity?
Hello, I have a doubt about Equity-Passing links report of OpensiteExplorer.org According to Sam Weber http://moz.com/community/users/432678 links which pass value from one page to another including followed 301 and Meta refresh links are under Equity-Passing links. I am surprising after looking at the links report generated by opensiteexplorer.org. Most of the article and directory links which have low DA and PA are under Equity-Passing links. Whereas websites like EzineArticle or Articlebase which have good DA and PA are not found in either Equity-passing links or under only nofollow category. Please suggest me if the report of Opensiteexplorer is not good enough or the links from the site like Ezine Article doesn’t pass the link equity. Thanks.

Question about ranking and links
Hi, Some back ground info first: My DA/PA is 42, the competitors who show up in the search engines for the term I am after have DA/PA 55/60. I have been creating anchor text links which target the term im after through guest blogging usually blogs with DA/PA 40+, I did this consistently with a guest post every 3 days for about a month so that's around 10 guest posts. And I also did some brand name blog comments, but these were no-follow and added sig to some forums. This moved me from page 5 to page 1, position 4. I then stopped and over the last 3 weeks it slipped to position 6 then to position 8. The competition doesn't look to actively target this term looking at the data from opensite explorer there main anchor text is there brand names. Why would I be slipping through the results? Not moaning just want to understand why so I can counter it. I was thinking about going for social signals through a blog to help.

Is it a reciprocal Link ?
Hi, I found a great website and tought its content would be extremely interesting for our clients. I wrote about it on my blog (which has an URL with our website URL in it) , Facebook Page and even in Twitter. Meanwhile, I contacted them and offered to write an article about an interesting subject for them. They accepted and liked it so much that they decided to put 2 links for us on two of their pages. My questions are : Will this be a reciprocal link for Google? Did I make a mistake talking about them on my blog ? Did I «devaluate» the links they gave us?

Using an SEO Agency to build one-way links for you via link exchange
There are a number of SEO agencies which offer link building as part of their SEO offerings. I believe they build one-way links to the client site, by offering another link in exchange to the liking site. So, if the client site is "C", and link is being requested from site "A", the site "A" owner is offered a link from site "B" in return. Is this a good and/or recommended practice?

Total Links vs Ext. Followed Links
Hi I'm fairly new to SEO and SEOMOZ. I've created a campaign for my own site and I've added 3 competitor sites. There are 1,385 total links to my site and a massive 49,450 links to one of my competitor's site. However under "Ext. Followed Links", there are 1,045 to my site and only 911 to the same competitor site. Am I correct that it is the "Ext. Followed Links" which are more important from an SEO point of view as the other links have the "no follow" attribute set? Or have I got this wrong? Thanks James

Links from any country?
My site is aimed primarily at the UK, 90% of the traffic is from the UK and most of my links are from other UK based and UK targetted websites. The content is actually fairly international (apart from certain terms like Plasterboard instead of Drywall, etc). My question is: Should I concentrate on gathering links from the UK, or should I widen my search and try to get links from US and European websites? Are there any particular advantages or disadvantages to keeping links "local"?

Link Building Question
Hello, Here is my situation - i'm number 10 for a moderate keyword and i want to rank higher . Using the Open Site Explorer i studied the links of 12 competitors and noticed the following : There are only 2 sites that are doing 100% white hat - one of them is on first page only because has a big,big domain autority, the other because is a brand name. The rest of my competitors are on first page using directory submissions (i discovered 200+ directories - and not counting those that are not indexed.), buying links (for ex check these 2 :http://www.dentistsburbank.com/links , http://www.dentistinaustin.com/links/ - there are 50+ more sites like this), spam forums and article submissions. For my site i tried to get only quality links, tried link bait, quality articles - etc(and this for more that 18 months). Unfortunately it seems that my efforts are not enough(seems that links from military.com are not enough to beat 200 low quality directories) and i want to ask the community what should i do. Shall i invest in directory submissions (it will cost around $1500) ? If not in directories in what shall i invest the money ? Are there any companies able to create successful link baits ? Shall i report the paid links hoping that Google will take action ? Any other ideas 🙂
