Directories

Hi All,
Some saying getting listed in hundreds of directories has no real SEO benefit. Some saying opposite. Some saying there are only one directory to concerned with, the Yahoo Directory.
What are your opinions on this question after all Google's Pandas and Penguins ?
Thank you

Hi Webdeal. http://addurl.nu/ has an up to date list of quality website directories. I hope this helps!

I think Dana did a perfect justice to that answers, All I wanted to add here is that when finalizing the list of directories always consider niche instead of the general directories.

There are definitely more directories, in addition to Yahoo, that are still very worthwhile. I think the key is...balance. If the only links your site has are from directories, then they aren't going to be as valued. if you have a good balance of inbound links from directories of other sites, then you're okay.
Here's my "fast and dirty" list of things to check before you decide to get listed in a directory:
- How old is the directory? Older is better
- What's the PageRank of the Directory? Higher is better, above 3 is better, below that forget about it.
- What is the cache date of the directory? (more than 2 weeks, forget about it)
- Does the directory have a "free" inclusion option? Great! That's a good thing.
- How many inbound links does the directory have (use OSE), more is better
- What's the Alexa rank of the directory? Lower is better
- What country is the directory based in? Some are better than others. I'll let you make that call
I recently updated an excellent list of 100 reputable Web Directories just a few days ago. You can view it here: http://www.danatanseo.com/2012/03/high-pagerank-web-directory-listings.html!
I hope this helps!

Is Building a Local Directory of Businesses on a Subdomain Good SEO?
Hello Fellow Moz'ers: I own a small digital shop in a major US city. We had a marketing idea which I'd like some input on the soundness of. We are creating a professional services directory of 'digital professional services providers' in our hometown. The directory's membership will only be open to firms located within our city limits. The directory will be curated and maintained, ongoing, by us. Our motivation is 75% selfish and 25% benevolent. The idea is that, by building the directory on our subdomain, we hopefully will collect links, which ultimately will enhance search visibility. But I'm concerned about the devaluation directories have incurred in recent years and I've even seen advice given to the effect that listings in some directories might be harmful to a site's link profile. It is not our intention to harm those who might list in our directory. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Directory Quality for Citation Building
Hello All, Just started to work on a new clients site that has been hit with multiple google penalties. I was looking at their backlink profile and noticed they have numerous links from what seem to be very low quality directory websites. My question is, when building citations and looking for directories to submit to, what makes one directory more credible then another one? If most of them are just publishing links and business information, why does google consider one credible and the other spammy? Clearly with some it's easy to tell if they are credible or not, but with some it is not as easy. Should you only really be submitting to the best of the best or are some lower lever ones ok too? Have read a few things on this topic, but most is older and just want to hear what people have to say on this today. Thanks.

It's a good idea to have a directory on your website?
Currently I have a directory on a sub domain but Google apparently sees it as part of my main domain so all outgoing links may be affecting my rankings?

Mission Possible? You have 3 hours to do Local SEO. Which top 5 sites do you go Social Bookmark, Local Search Engine Submit and Directory List.
Mission Possible? Here is a test. Suppose you had 3 hours (okay 7) to go and submit links, etc, on Social Bookmarking, Local Search Engines and Directories, which top 5 or more of each would you do? (Assuming your on-page is already sweetened). I just got 2 more clients and I need to get started on a few things for each. Thankful for all your advice.............

De-indexed Link Directory
Howdy Guys, I'm currently working through our 4th reconsideration request and just have a couple of questions. Using Link Detox (www.linkresearchtools.com) new tool they have flagged up a 64 links that are Toxic and should be removed. After analysing them further alot / most of them are link directories that have now been de-indexed by Google. Do you think we should still ask for them to be removed or is this a pointless exercise as the links has already been removed because its been de-indexed. Would like your views on this guys.

Duplicate Content from Article Directories
I have a small client with a website PR2, 268 links from 21 root domains with mozTrusts 5.5, MozRank 4.5 However whenever I check in google for the amount of link: Google always give the response none. My client has a blog and many articles on the blog. However they have submitted their blog article every time to article directories as well, plain and simle creating duplicate and content. Is this the reason why their link: is coming up as none? Is there something to correct the situation?
