Redirecting old domain to new domain with wordpress
-
Hi all,
I need to change domain name to a website published on wordpress. I'd think to make these steps:
-
trasferring the website (files+db) to a new hosting space
-
to redirect old site (www.oldsite.com) to the new one (www.newsite.com) using rewrite rules.
With these steps I'd need to transfer and reinstall files and wordpress so I would like to discover if there's some less time expending procedure to consider.
Thanks and ciao
Bob

Ciao Bob,
Hope you are doing well. I have created a video response for your problem. I hope it is what you are looking for.
In Summary
Method 1
If you just care about the site content and don't care about the theme you can download posts, pages and comments using Tools->Export to XML
You can then upload this to the new wordpress instance and either manually change the internal links or use the search and replace plugin to change all instances of the old domain.
Method 2
You can do it the traditional way (it doesn't really take that long). It is outlined here.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress
There is also a great post by Yoast that describes how to migrate Wordpress.

You backup your database from "tools" in the dashboard, and make a copy of your wp-content folder, reinstall wordpress, replace the new wp-content with the old, import the database file...no quicker way as far as I know.
But you can always ask in a wordpress forum and see what people say, or consult the wordpress codex.

Domain Change
What is the average organic traffic loss one can expect after switching to a new domain? We went from .com to .org and are seeing 50% decline in organic traffic and 25% in Google news traffic. 301s were implemented from site.com/some-page to site.org/some-page and change site was completed in WMT. This traffic drop seems excessive...

URL Structure On Site - Currently it's domain/product-name NOT domain/category/product name is this bad?
I have a eCommerce site and the site structure is domain/product-name rather than domain/product-category/product-name Do you think this will have a negative impact SEO Wise? I have seen that some of my individual product pages do get better rankings than my categories.

Wordpress Pods and Wordpress SEO by Yoast
Hi I am optimising a new site that has been built in Wordpress using Pods. The Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin is not recognising any content on the site - has anyone any ideas on how to get around this - does it matter - is it the plugin that is at fault rahter than the set up of the site?

301 redirect or maual edit of new urls
Hello forum! I will get right to the point,I have a 4 year old PR4 site with lots of links (vacation rentals marketplace, like Homeaway), In about a month from now new CMS will be ready and I will be doing redesign of the site. The problem that I have is (as many of you can guess) losing all the old links that rank high = losing traffic / revenue. Two posiblle solutions here: 1. 301 redirect for each page that ranks high - point it to new url 2. Manually editing new urls created by new CMS and making them to be the same as old ones. This means that some number of urls (the ones that rank high and generate traffic) would be exactly the same while other ones would be generated by CMS thus dufferent in many ways (unicode, different keywords etc.) What would You do here? I am more for 301 redirect but I read all kinds of horror stories in drop of SERP. Thank You for help and advices in advance.

Does it matter if I leave image links pointing to old site when I move a wordpress blog?
Hi everyone I am moving a blog from one site to another. I have all the 301 redirects etc under control, but my question has to do with image links in the blogs. The image links all point over to the old site once the posts are copied over. Is this a major problem from an SEO perspective? Lots of links pointing out to an old site? It won't matter from the users perspective as I have 'none' for the image URL, so the user will never know. I will reload all the images if necessary but boy that will be a lot of work. Or is there a shortcut? Thanks very much Wendy

What is SEO impact of redirecting from domain to https appspot domain ?
Our site is hosted on google and is fully https. But since google's limitation is that all https needs to be on the appspot domain, we are redirecting users from our website to the appspot domain. What is the impact of this on SEO?
