Are In bound links to a Custom URL ineffective
-
Hi All,
I would like to know what would achieve the best inbound link ranking from google. I have to run an inbound link campaign and have to choose between two options:
Option 1, get people to link directly to the home page
or
Option 2, get people to link to a custom url (for example, www.domain.com/index.aspx?dealer1455) the custom url has a function to hide certain menu items on the home page. Also The custom url ID number will also change for each person that links to us. So in effect each link is directed to an individual custom URL.
My preference is option 1. But a number of the people linking to us would prefer to link to a custom home page that has their competitors details hidden. At the end of the day the decision needs to be made on what will provide our site with the best rankings in the serps
What option is best to improve search engine rankings ?
Many Thanks in advance

While not 100% effective you can tell Google to ignore the ?dealer parameter in Webmaster Tools but that would involve setting up the parameter differently so it looks like ?dealer=1234 rather than ?dealer1234, so not sure how big a pain that is.
Otherwise you can set up a canonical tag so that the canonical version of the page is always /index.aspx for every parameter.
Ideally do both if it will help you get the links in. You should lose very little of the link juice by ignoring the parameter and using canonical.
EDIT: Here's a little bit on parameter handling - http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=147959 - complete with clever Barenaked Ladies reference

If you have multiple variations of www.domain.com/index.aspx linked, each one would, in my understanding of your situation, have one inbound link. One link pointing to a designated "unique" page is very rarely going to be able to provide any high value ranking.
In addition, each of those "pages" would be indexed and seen as a unique page by search engines. Since the links would only come from 3rd party sites and NOT from within your site, they'd be even weaker.
So if you prefer to focus on SEO for your site, then links should point to your home page without the index.aspx page name in the URL.

Better to place linked-back article or post article and seek multiple links?
Which option is better for SEO purposes: 1. Author article for trade journal in return for link back to my home page. 2. Post article on my site and solicit links from multiple sites. Assume links all have moderate authority.

Internal Linking
OSE only shows me as having 24 internal links on my home page. My internal links and total links are far less than my competitors, some of whom have 1700 on a single page. My site is www.CenterCityTeam.com and an example of a competitor with far more internal links is www.McCannTeam.com. 1) How do I get that many internal links on a page and 2) do I even want to?

Does This Link Have Value?
Hi Mozzers, A client paid to publish a white paper, thinking that the link to the web site is beneficial. The link does redirect back to the web site, but is in a format that I've never seen: http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YdyyLrzOQJxM87SJZkJYVbQKSdCmFpwqg1fuX3yqVqpGboUjdSaHv9IdW5HsQpgmvwOrg5N4T3DNHYV8e1UVe_YCua_XQCFykoSJvu1HzDyb-3x-aFcPU-ER-vwWxq4- Does this link have any value?

Root Domain Link for Affiliate's Link
It seems my affiliate link: http://www.hrmsplugins.com?partners=21 is not being considered as a "root domain" backlink when this link is used on their website. Is there a reason for this?

Will No Follow Links count toward your root domain links for Domain Authority?
I am wondering if no follow links help, hurt, or do nothing when it comes to increasing page and domain authority? I know they are not supposed to pass rank and I have read discussions that some people suspect they still might, but I am wondering if I have a mix of follow plus no follow, will the no follow ones increase the count of the root domains linking to me and help boost my authority? Assuming of course the no follow links are coming from quality sites with high page and domain authority of their own. Thanks.

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.
