Blog commenting - dos and don'ts
-
Dear Community,
I'm getting into blog commenting heavily now for the relationships I'm building with other bloggers. I think the relationships I will build with these other influencers will be helpful.
But I'm concerned that Google may penalize my site if I have a lot of links coming from blog commenting. If I sense that a blog is spammy, obviously I stay away. I've also noticed that a number of CommentLuv sites include a link to my latest blog post, and that has helped me greatly in promoting my posts and building readership. I am also interested in the follow links I get from it, but concerned in that regard that (1) Google won't count those follow links (won't pass page rank) and (2) Google will penalize me for some reason or in some way.
What does everyone think about this approach of blog commenting, and in particular, including posting some comments on CommentLuv blogs.
Thanks!
Mike

I can't say for sure if this would hurt you, but I know that we saw a definite decline in ROI after after an extended period of doing nothing but press-releases for our link building. It's probably a good idea to mix things up and go after some different link types if you can.
Our strategy is to go after the high-value, high-investment links first. Then read and comment on relevant blogs, submit to niche directories, bookmark content, post guest-blogs, and join new social media communities where it makes sense.

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses.
I'm using my real name, not keyword anchor text. Also, I am taking a lot of care to write a good response (a paragraph or two worth of thoughtful information).
Some of the blogs I am finding do have follow links and I'm wondering if those pass page rank.
Also, Brian, as for percentage of links that come from blog commenting, I am not really pursuing links anywhere else. Is this a problem?

Be mindful of your link profile. Link Detective is a good tool for visualizing this type of data, and it works with OSE exports. I was researching a major competitor recently and found that 37% of their profile was comprised of blog comments, so I would assume that this would be on the upper threshold of what could be considered a balanced link profile.

I agree with both of the earlier responses. Commenting to build relationships is valuable and doesn't carry much risk. Commenting with anchor text or with bullshit responses is spammy and will not help you build relationships which should be your primary objective when commenting.
-
As long as you are using your real name while commenting and not using spammy anchor text, I don't see how you could get penalized for commenting.

Hi Mike,
Commenting is definitely a good way to build relationship and share your expertise. As long as you are staying away from spammy sites and posting sales pitch on other people's blot, I believe everything should be fine.
When you comment or participate, you don't necessarily need to post informative content but it would be nice and useful for building relationship. I would say just not to post sales pitches.
To answer your question, links in comments are usually nofollow so it won't give you any linkjuice. However, with Commentluv, it is nice to help your blog get more exposure and possibly traffic IF your comment was informative and etc., people might be interseted and view your blog.
Hope this helps.

Buying a blog that already has links and authority
Hello, I hope all are well and keeping safe. I am about to launch a brand new website and am looking to get a slight boost of links to get started. I looked on Fiverr, but realise that this may not be the best option. I have found a blog for sale that matches with a section of my niche. SO have a couple of questions: 1. Is it still worth buying blogs and doing a 301? 2. If yes, would it still work if i 301 these to a category of my main blog? 3. According the moz tool, it has a spam score of 2%, I am attaching an image of the spam score from moz. I am a bit lost and would appreciate any feedback on best practice or if anyone has tried something similar. Many thanks Shehzad O92dqn7

How good/bad the exit intent pop-ups? What is Google's perspective?
Hi all, We have launched the exit intent pop-ups on our website where a pop-up will appear when the visitor is about to leave the website. This will trigger when the mouse is moved to the top window section; as an attempt by the visitor to close the window. We see a slight ranking drop post this pop-up launch. As the pop-up is appearing just before someone leaves the website; does this making Google to see as if the user left because of the pop-up and penalizing us? What is your thoughts and suggestions on this? Thanks

Why do these links violate Google's Quality Guideline?
My reconsideration request was declined by Google. Google said that some of the links to my site (www.pianomother.com) are still outside its quality guidelines. We provide piano lessons and sheet music on the site. Three samples are given. 1. http://www.willbeavis.com/links.htm 2. http://vivienzone.blogspot.com/2009/06/learning-how-to-play-piano.html 3. http://interiorpianoservice.com/links/ The first one is obvious because it is a link exchange page. I don't understand why the 2nd and 3rd ones are considered "inorganic links" by Google. The 2nd link is a blog that covers various topics including music, health, computer, etc. The 3rd one is a page of the site that provides piano related services. Other resources related to piano including my website are listed on the page. Please help. Thanks. John

Blogger relationship - One Off VS periodic monthly blogging (which is best)
Good day all, I am interested in building relationships with my bloggers (i.e...people that are interested in my website and blog about it regularly). I would also propose to them the idea of blogging about our page regularly, perhaps recurring monthly. If the strategy is in place, could receiving links from the same bloggers each month cause any negative SEO effects? Thanks for your input.

Big loss in Google traffic recently, but can't work out what the problem is
Since about May 17 my site - http://lowcostmarketingstrategies.com - has suffered a big drop in traffic from Google, presumed from the dreaded Penguin update. I am at a loss why I have been hit when I don't engage in any black hat SEO tactics or do any link building. The site is high quality, provides a good experience for the user and I make sure that all of the content is unique and not published elsewhere. The common checklist of potential problems from Penguin (such as keyword stuffing, web spam and over optimisation in general) don't seem relevant to my site. I'm wondering if someone could take a quick look at my site to see any obvious things that need to be removed to get back in Google's good books. I was receiving around 200 - 250 hits per day, but that has now dropped down to 50 - 100 and I fee that I have been penalised incorrectly. Any input would be fantastic Thanks 🙂

Influence of users' comments on a page (on-page SEO)
Do you think when Google crawls your page, it "monitors" comments updates to use this as a ranking factor? If Google is looking for social signs, looking for comments updates might be a social sign as well (ok a lot easier to manipulate, but still social). thx

Beaten in SERP's by a site going 'all in' on 2 keywords in their anchor text profile.
I would like to get peoples thoughts on putting 80% of your anchor text links in just 2 keywords vs a nice spread of branded and longtail keywords.. like I am. recently fell off the first page for a key SERP.. and the site in P10 has gone nuts on just that two keyword's.. I know we have a good site onpage/ conversion / low bounce rate page views etc.. Pretty sure we get more traffic than them. Seems that this obvious bloated anchor text profiling has worked for them though.. What do you guys think/know?
