Wordpress in a subdirectory?
-
Hi, I've used this method a few times of developing Wordpress websites in a subdirectory and only moving the index.php file to root when the site is ready to launch. (full details of how this is done in the link below)
The sites I've used this on all index correctly and rank for their terms, so I haven't seen any negatives at all. However moving forward I would like to know for sure if this is indeed SEO-friendly?
note: The site functions as any other at www.domain.com, it's only the Wordpress install & admin etc. resides at: www.domain.com/wordpress/ -the pages are served to root ie. www.domain.com/about)
Details.. WordPress from a subdirectory to the root directory:

thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply Marcus, and also for the details for moving to root. That may come in handy, and anyone else who stumbles across this thread too.
It's good to know there appear to be no issues for SEO in Wordpress residing in a subdirectory, yet I am appreciating more and more the need to keep things as simple and straight forward as possible.

Hey, I have been working like this for years and my own site uses this approach. However, I have come across a few premium themes and a smaller amount of plugins when it can cause a few problems, usually these are things you can easily hack in the source but it may break things when you update your theme and you have to hack again (yoothemes always have this bug).
So, I tend to keep sites in the root now if possible just to simplify things as much as possible.
Moving the site to a different URL / Directory is a pretty simple process:
1. Move all of the relevant files
2. Run the following queries in PHPMyAdmin (or whatever DB tool you use)
**UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = replace(option_value, 'OLDSITE', 'NEWSITE') WHERE option_name = 'home' OR option_name = 'siteurl';
UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'OLDSITE','NEWSITE');
UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, 'OLDSITE', 'NEWSITE');
UPDATE wp_postmeta SET meta_value = replace(meta_value, 'OLDSITE', 'NEWSITE');**
- URLs are full paths without a trailing slash so
OLDSITE = http://www.url.com/subdir
NEWSITE = http://www.url.com
Obviously, back up the DB and test the water first but I have used this SQL a bunch of times (even in the last week) to move sites from one server to another (testing to live) or to even move sites from a sub directory to the root. Or, even to move sites from a sub directory on a testing server to the root on the live space.
So, it is not an essential change by any means but in the spirit of keeping things as simple and straightforward as possible, the root tends to work a little better in my experience.
Hope that helps!

Having worked quite a bit with WordPress (since version 1.2) I can't think of an SEO reason why this would cause a problem.
The only potential gotcha that comes to mind is that I'm not sure how well WordPress' one-click updater feature is going to work when WP has been spread amongst multiple directories.

Migration from HTML to Wordpress - SEO Implications?
I am in the process of having a wordpress site developed to replace my current HTML site. (I currently have my website in html and a blog in wordpress in a sub directory). I am doing this in phases to try and preserve as much of my good rankings as possible. My first phase is to replicate my site with the exact same pages, meta data, and site structure. I'm hoping that google will see this as not much change and not change my rankings for the worse. I also made it a goal that my site speed tests be at least equal to what they are now. We will have to 301 all of the URLs however since it will be going from /example.html to /example. I believe my blog will also need to move into the root directory as well, so I need to 301 all of those pages. I plan to wait a couple months for Phase 2. Phase 2 involves replacing old content (photo galleries), and introducing new content (virtual tours, videos, new pages, etc.) One of my reasons for moving to wordpress is to keep up with current trends a little easier since I have very little time. (I am owner, website maintainer, SEO - all on my own). My question here is three parts. 1. Do you think this strategy will work to preserve my current rankings? 2. Do you have any lessons learned or advice to share with me to make this as smooth as possible? 3. Do I really need to wait to add new content? I might get antsy and want to do it sooner! 🙂 Thank you in advance!

How to export Wordpress comments ONLY to a new domain
Hi Guys, We have a bit of situation here. We have a website (let's say it is www.oldsite.com) where we had more than 2000 posts. There arose a need whereby we had to move some 60-70 posts from this oldsite.com to another domain of ours (www.newsite.com). So, here is what we did: Move those 60-70 posts manually from oldsite.com to newsite.com Did a 301 redirect of each of those 60-70 posts from oldsite.com to newsite.com. Google has now started to rank the posts from the newsite.com for this. That's all good till now. Now, here comes the situation. We also want to move the comments from some of those posts of oldsite.com (some 10-12 posts out of those 60-70) to the respective posts of newsite.com. How do we do that? Do note that we are pretty comfortable with databases and to some extent PHP. Please help.

Switching over to wordpress
Hello fellow Mozers! I've searched to see if I find an answer, cant seem to find it. Is there a way to do a blanket 301 redirect? I am moving a site that has all pages end with .html extension over to wordpress. I was wondering if I could set up a rule that says redirect all pages with .html extension to a version of the page with no extension. I will keep the same url with the exception of the .html extension. http://www.website.com/page.html to http://www.website.com/page/

http://www.website.com/page-title.html to http://www.website.com/page-title/ Instead of doing a 301 redirect for about 250 pages, I was wondering if I can just do one rule that will handle all the redirects considering I am keeping the same page url without the .html extension. Thanks 🙂0 -

Wordpress Frameworks for SEO - Genesis - Does it Get Any Better?
I'm sure there's a ton of people in this community running Wordpress, any Genesis developers/users out there? For anybody who doesn't know, Genesis is a parent framework for building wordpress child themes. It saves a ton of time for people that aren't too handy w/ php (like me). I'm working on a few sites locally with it right now, and it's really impressive. I'm seriously never planning on using another WP framework. It also integrates perfectly with Yoast SEO, which is something not all frameworks do. So I thought I'd try to get some input from the community here, anybody have another framework they like? Or have an opinion on the SEO benefit of genesis? Would love to hear...
