Directories and Bookmarking
-
Our company has a wide range of linking strategies. Currently, our SEO team members are linking to directories more than anything else. Are there any advantage to this or should they put there effort elsewhere?
My views on directories: these links are easy to acquire and offer little push to our SEO efforts. It appears that Google is no longer taking directories in consideration and essentially they could be hurting our rankings.
What should our company do; should we stop linking to directories all together or keep it to a minimum. Also isn't bookmarking on the same lines as directories? What is the best way to handle this?

I very much hold the same opinion as you.
Directories pass very little strength, if they pass any at all. Primarily for the reasons that you have said, but also because they really offer very little to the user (when's the last time someone used a directory to find something?)
What I think we've seen lately is Google targeting directories and devaluing the little strength they had relatively quickly and regularly. This should be reason enough not to pursue them as a tactic.
But then you have to consider the negative effect. Directories could very well harm your website. We've seen directories in the past be deindexed, and links from a deindexed domain can be a negative ranking factor. There's nothing stopping Google deindexing more directories in the future, in my opinion.
I'd move far, far away from directories as a linking tactic and explore other inbound tactics, such as content marketing. As for bookmarks, I'd pretty much say the same. I think the chance of it causing a negative effect are smaller, but any benefit a social bookmark has now is likely to be negligible. They're pretty much good for indexing and little else (and even then, sharing the link on facebook or Google+ is better for that).
Hope this helps - I think you're spot on and should whip those SEOs into shape!

Do the bots crawl the top of the page first - directory listing question
Hi all, I've purchased a link from a good PR4 website, but they added my link to the bottom of a lengthy page. They offered to up-sell me to get to the top of the page, where I'll be 10 or 12 links down. One of my direct competitors is at the top, so I'm happy with the directory choice (they spank me in rankings). The only reason I'm on this directory is to purely capture link juice. So knowing all of that, my question is, should I go ahead and pay to be on the top, assuming that Google bots crawl a page from the top down? It's important to me for the bot to log this link quickly. Or is paying to be at the top pointless, because the bot will just as quickly crawl to the bottom of the page and pick up the link anyway? Thanks! T

Creating Local Listings for Small Business Clients - Verifying if phone call is only verification option? Are directory submission services worth it?
I'm relatively new to local SEO --- I do a lot of local websites for small businesses (restaurants, bars, hotels, attorneys, dentists) in my area and thought it would make sense to include basic local SEO work with my websites. I have a couple of questions about adding my client's businesses to local business directories... I've started by adding each business to Google, Bing, and Yahoo business listings. I verified these listings with the postcard option which my clients then email to me. I've started adding them to additional directories but have found that many local directories require a phone call to the business to verify it (no other options). How do most SEO companies handle this? Do I ask them to forward their phone to mine for a night? Does it make sense to do local directory submission by hand? I created a spreadsheet for each company and keep track of each directory I submit to (the directory name, verification status, and username & password). I looked at services like Yext but doubt they are as thorough as doing it by hand? Any other advice on local business directory submission would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Paid Directory Value
Hi All! Recently we scaled back the number of paid directories that we use for our clients, mainly due to them being devalued. To select which directories made the cut, we looked at things like Domain Authority, Page Rank, and Trust; all of the things you're supposed to be looking for in a quality link. We even used the list of directories here on SEOmoz as a reference. Two of the directories we use are Yahoo and BOTW, both of which seem to draw the ire of many professionals here. Is there something I'm missing? If these directories have solid numbers, why such backlash towards them? I appreciate any insight you can give me! Frank

How Google handles with paid directories?
Are paid directories held to the same standards as paid links? Is it going to get penalized my website if I submit website to paid directory?

Why am is my PR # dropping after signing up for quality directories?
I have followed the suggestion regarding quality inbound linking from reputable sites....ie open directory, yahoo, and only directories recommended by other SEO groups and only with PR's of 4 or higher. After listing, my PR # went down. How do I find the culprit to start reversing this? My fear is I am on a downward slope..Thanks!

Question on Directory submission
If I am submitting to directories for our site. Should I submit them as www.mycompany.com or http://www.mycompany.com or some other way. Any best practices? Or does it even matter? I am a novice.

Is this a directory or are they selling links?
I came across a website that at first looks like an informational site, but they also have a directory. On their directory page, it says that if you would like a link placed in our directory email sales@site.com. Do you think Google would consider this a purchased link or a directory link? Can people get away with selling links on your site if you framed it as a "directory"?

Directory Submissions
Hello All. Our site has 17,000 links from over 300 route domains but none from directories. Using open site explorer i've found tons of paid and free directories but Its so time consuming manually submitting. Is it better to take the time to check each directory manually or should I look at some kind of automated service? Cheers Todd
