Benefit of Diversifying Your Hosting Providers
-
Is there a benefit to diversifying your hosting providers? I mean if there are 10 client sites on one shared hosting package and they all have links to my company because we give ourselves credit on all the sites we build. Will Google give the links to me less weight or even look at it as some link building scheme? Does private registration prevetn things like this. Would it help if i got my own IP's from different C blocks? Thank you in advance Mozzer family!!

Great input! Thanks for taking the time to respond, I truly appreciate it!

And of course having different "C blocks" would in no way be enough to separate the sites in the eyes of the search engines.
Just for starters, you'd also need to ensure none of the following are shared between any of the sites:
- Analytics accounts, whether Google or other 3rd parties
- Google and Bing Webmaster Tools accounts
- Adwords/Adsense accounts (or probably any other ad networks)
- domain registrar accounts
So as Allan says, totally not worth it for the slight potential gain. There's no way they can be considered "natural" so only use them if they're useful to actually drive human traffic ("hmm.. nice-looking site, I wonder who built it") and then nofollow as Alan recommends.
-
Interesting... thank you for that insight. I really had no idea the "Designed by" credit could be a negative thing. I do want the credit there, but I am going to take under serious consideration your recommendation on "no-follow"
Thanks again, much appreciated!!!

First of all, giving yourself credit with links to your site on your client sites is not recommended. The relevance is very low, placement is not within content that would likely be relevant even to that site's topical focus, and if there is anything more than one link coming from each site, the link to root domain ratio is going to be of concern.
If you go so far as to have that link be in footer or sidebar areas, that lowers their trust signal even further.
In light of how important quality, relevance and frequency are in 2013, there's no true reason to be doing this unless the links are nofollowed, because based on all these considerations, if they're not nofollowed, they're clearly manipulative in nature only.
If you insist on having links from every client for some reason, and if you choose to ignore the nofollow recommendation, you could attempt to mitigate the potential damage by spreading client sites across different hosting providers. Is that process worth the effort to gain what little bit of SEO value you might gain otherwise?
And for the record, different c blocks are not enough in today's world. One host, many c blocks- all still the same host. Pretty obvious in the detection cycle.

SEO question regarding rails app on www.site.com hosted on Heroku and www.site.com/blog at another host
Hi, I have a rails app hosted on Heroku (www.site.com) and would much prefer to set up a Wordpress blog using a different host pointing to www.site.com/blog, as opposed to using a gem within the actual app. Whats are peoples thoughts regarding there being any ranking implications for implementing the set up as noted in this post on Stackoverflow: "What I would do is serve your Wordpress blog along side your Rails app (so you've got a PHP and a Rails server running), and just have your /blog route point to a controller that redirects to your Wordpress app. Add something like this to your routes.rb: _`get '/blog', to:'blog#redirect'`_ and then have a redirect method in your BlogController that simply does this: _`classBlogController<applicationcontrollerdef redirect="" redirect_to="" "url_of_wordpress_blog"endend<="" code=""></applicationcontrollerdef>`_ _Now you can point at yourdomain.com/blog and it will take you to the Wordpress site._

SEO benefit of tracked URLs
I've found a lot of mixed info on this topic so I thought I'd ask the experts (Moz community). If I'm adding tracking parameters to URLs to monitor organic traffic will this affect the rank/value of the original clean URL? If so, would best practice be to 301 redirect the tracked URL to the original:

i.e. redirect www.example.com/category/?DZID=Organic_G_NP/SQ&utm_source=Organic&utm_medium=Google TO www.example.com/category Thanks for your help!

First attempt at manual penalty removal fails - all example links provided by Google not in Majestic, GWT, Ahrefs, LinkDetox, or OSE.
Hello all, I am trying to recover a site from a manual penalty. I already submitted once. Here's what we did. We took the link profile from webmaster tools, majestic seo, ahrefs, link detox, and ose. We manually looked at every link to exclude good links. Then used a tool to run the removal campaign. Submitted a disavow file and reconsideration request. Google came back with a denial. When I looked at the three example links that Google provided, they were definitely spammy (forum profile and comment spam). But none of them were in any of the original csv downloads from GWT, Ahrefs, Majestic, OSE, or LinkDetox. What can I do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Benefit of Targeting Low/No Volume Keyword Phrases
Hi Folks, I was having a discussion with a friend and colleague of mine yesterday about the pros and cons of targeting keyword phrases that have very little if any search volume. I was of the opinion that if the keyword phrases (whether they were local or not) did not have any search volume as indicated by Google's Keyword Planner tool, then they had little if any value. Would this be a correct assumption? Or is there merit to targeting these phrases in order to begin to build a picture of a sites overall subject matter and to help rank in local search? For example, say there is a phrase like 'second hand clothing slough' (just a random phrase) which has no search volume but 'second hand clothing' has 2400 visits a month, would it be worth targeting the search phrase with no volume to build a better local profile, so that if someone in Slough searches for 'second hand clothing' the site shows up for that keyword? Thanks in advance guys! Gareth

How do I Syndicating Content for SEO Benefit?
Right now, I am working on one E-Commerce website. I have found same content on that E-Commerce website from manufacturer website. You can visit following pages to know more about it. http://www.vistastores.com/casablanca-sectional-sofa-with-ottoman-ci-1236-moc.html http://www.abbyson.com/room/contemporary/casablanca-detail http://www.vistastores.com/contemporary-coffee-table-in-american-white-oak-with-black-lacquer-element-ft55cfa.html http://www.furnitech.com/ft55cfa.html I don't want to go with Robots.txt, Meta Robots NOINDEX & Canonical tag. Because, There are 5000+ products available on website with duplicate content. So, I am thinking to add Source URL on each product page with Do follow attribute. Do you think? That will help me to save my website from duplicate content penalty? OR How do I Syndicating Content for SEO Benefit?

Are there any benefits to having dashes in file names?
Through searching, I can find lots of discussion regarding "dash vs underscore", but am having trouble with an even simpler question: Is there any SEO difference between using http://www.broadway.com/shows/milliondollarquartet.php vs. http://www.broadway.com/shows/million-dollar-quartet.php
