Can I rely on just robots.txt
-
We have a test version of a clients web site on a separate server before it goes onto the live server.
Some code from the test site has some how managed to get Google to index the test site which isn't great!
Would simply adding a robots text file to the root of test simply blocking all be good enough or will i have to put the meta tags for no index and no follow etc on all pages on the test site also?

You can do the inbound link check right here using SEOMoz's Open Site Explorer tool to check for links to the dev site, whether it's in a subdomain, subfolder or a separate site.
Good luck!

thats a great help cheers
wheres the best place to do an inbound link check?

You're actually up against a bit of a sticky wicket here, SS. You do need the no-index, no-follow meta tags on each page as Irving mentions.
HOWEVER! If you also add a robots.txt directive not to index the site, the search crawlers will not crawl your pages and therefore will never see the noindex metatag to know to remove the incorrectly-indexed pages from their index.
My recommendation is for a belt & suspenders approach.
- implement the meta no-index, no-follow tags throughout the dev site, but do NOT immediately implement the robots.txt exclusion. Wait a day or two until the pages get recrawled and the bots discover the noindex metatags
- Use the Remove URL tools in both Google and Bing Webmaster Tools to request removal of all the dev pages you are aware have been indexed.
- Then add the exclusion directive to the robots.txt file to keep the crawlers out from then on (leaving the no-index, no-follow tags in place).
- check back in the SERPS periodically to check that no other dev pages have been indexed. IF they have, do another manual removal request.
Does that make sense?
Paul
P.S. As a last measure, run an inbound links check on the dev pages that got indexed to find out which external pages are linking to the dev pages. Get those inbound links removed ASAP so the search engines aren't getting any signals to index the dev site. Last option would be to simply password-protect the directory the dev site is in. A little less convenient, but guaranteed to keep the crawlers out.

cheers, i thought as much

You cannot rely on robots.txt alone, you need to add the meta noindex tag to the pages as well to ensure that they will not get indexed.

Robots.txt and Multiple Sitemaps
Hello, I have a hopefully simple question but I wanted to ask to get a "second opinion" on what to do in this situation. I am working on a clients robots.txt and we have multiple sitemaps. Using yoast I have my sitemap_index.xml and I also have a sitemap-image.xml I do put them in google and bing by hand but wanted to have it added into the robots.txt for insurance. So my question is, when having multiple sitemaps called out on a robots.txt file does it matter if one is before the other? From my reading it looks like you can have multiple sitemaps called out, but I wasn't sure the best practice when writing it up in the file. Example: User-agent: * Disallow: Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/ Sitemap: http://sitename.com/sitemap_index.xml Sitemap: http://sitename.com/sitemap-image.xml Thanks a ton for the feedback, I really appreciate it! :) J

How can we get google to know we are a lifestyle magazine
hi, i have a website which is a lifestyle magazine www.in2town.co.uk before we had to build out site from scratch due to a major error from our hosting company we ranked number one for the word lifestyle magazine but since then we have always ranked number five. This week that has dropped to number seven and i would like to know, what do we need to do to let google know we are a lifestyle magazine. I am not sure what we need to do. i know we should have important keywords on the home page but i am not sure where to put these without making the site look silly. can anyone let me know if we should have an introduction and if so where shall we put this. we would really like to increase our page rank for lifestyle magazine but are struggling to know where to put text that will not make the site look silly. Also, can anyone let me know what other keywords we should be aiming for please; We are currently making major changes to our site to make it better.

Blocked by meta-robots but there is no robots file
OK, I'm a little frustred here. I've waited a week for the next weekly index to take place after changing the privacy setting in a wordpress website so Google can index, but I still got the same problem. Blocked by meta-robots, no index, no follow. But I do not see a robot file anywhere and the privacy setting in this Wordpress site is set to allow search engines to index this site. Website is www.marketalert.ca What am I missing here? Why can't I index the rest of the website and is there a faster way to test this rather than wait another week just to find out it didn't work again?

Robots.txt versus sitemap
Hi everyone, Lets say we have a robots.txt that disallows specific folders on our website, but a sitemap submitted in Google Webmaster Tools that lists content in those folders. Who wins? Will the sitemap content get indexed even if it's blocked by robots.txt? I know content that is blocked by robot.txt can still get indexed and display a URL if Google discovers it via a link so I'm wondering if that would happen in this scenario too. Thanks!

Should XML sitemaps include *all* pages or just the deeper ones?
Hi guys, Ok this is a bit of a sitemap 101 question but I cant find a definitive answer: When we're running out XML sitemaps for google to chew on (we're talking ecommerce and directory sites with many pages inside sub-categories here) is there any point in mentioning the homepage or even the second level pages? We know google is crawling and indexing those and we're thinking we should trim the fat and just send a map of the bottom level pages. What do you think?
