Best practice to avoid cannibalization of internal pages
-
Hi everyone,
I need help from the best SEO guys regarding a common issue : the cannibalization of internal pages between each other.
Here is the case :
Let's say I run the website CasualGames.com. This website provides free games, as well as articles and general presentation about given categories of Casual Games.
For instance, for the category "Sudoku Games", the structure will be :
- Home page of the game : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/
- Free sudoku game listings : (around 100 games listed) http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/free/
- A particular sudoku game : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/free/game-1/
- A news regarding sudoku games : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/news/title
The problem is that these pages seem to "cannibalize" each other. Explanation :
In the SERPS, for the keyword "Casual Games", the home page doesn't appear well ranked and some specific sudoku games page (one of the 100 games) are better ranked although they are "sub-pages" of the category.. Same for the news pages : a few are better ranked than the category page..
I am kind of lost.. Any idea what would be the best practice in this situation?
THANKS a LOT.

Thanks Adam.
I started to use breadcrumbs a few months ago but I guess It was too late.. The website is jeuxcasino.com, it provides free casino games. The main category page is for instance :
http://www.jeuxcasino.com/machine-a-sous/ for the "machine a sous" games.
But when I google the word "machine a sous", I have individual game pages or articles like this http://www.jeuxcasino.com/machine-a-sous/news/348-le-travail-technicien-machine-sous...

If you want the category page to rank for the keyword instead of an individual game page:
- Make sure the category page is well-optimized for that keyword
- Have all the game pages link to the category page (i.e. use breadcrumbs)
- Ensure the category page is linked to from the homepage
- Consider reducing the optimization of the game page(s) for the particular keyword
Without seeing the actual site and pages, that's all I can think of at the moment.

Will google be able to crawl all of the pages given that the pages displayed or the info on a page varies according to the city of a user?
So the website I am working for asks for a location before displaying the product pages. There are two cities with multiple warehouses. Based on the users' location, the product pages available in the warehouse serving only in that area are shown. If the user skips location, default warehouse-related product pages are shown. The APIs are all location-based.

What's the best way to noindex pages but still keep backlinks equity?
Hello everyone, Maybe it is a stupid question, but I ask to the experts... What's the best way to noindex pages but still keep backlinks equity from those noindexed pages? For example, let's say I have many pages that look similar to a "main" page which I solely want to appear on Google, so I want to noindex all pages with the exception of that "main" page... but, what if I also want to transfer any possible link equity present on the noindexed pages to the main page? The only solution I have thought is to add a canonical tag pointing to the main page on those noindexed pages... but will that work or cause wreak havoc in some way?

301 Externally Linked, But Non-Producing Pages, To Productive Pages Needing Links?
I'm working on a site that has some non-productive pages without much of an upside potential, but that are linked-to externally. The site also has some productive pages, light in external links, in a somewhat related topic. What do you think of 301ing the non-productive pages with links to the productive pages without links in order to give them more external link love? Would it make much of a difference? Thanks... How long takes to a page show up in Google results after removing noindex from a page?
Hi folks, A client of mine created a new page and used meta robots noindex to not show the page while they are not ready to launch it. The problem is that somehow Google "crawled" the page and now, after removing the meta robots noindex, the page does not show up in the results. We've tried to crawl it using Fetch as Googlebot, and then submit it using the button that appears. We've included the page in sitemap.xml and also used the old Google submit new page URL https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url Does anyone know how long will it take for Google to show the page AFTER removing meta robots noindex from the page? Any reliable references of the statement? I did not find any Google video/post about this. I know that in some days it will appear but I'd like to have a good reference for the future. Thanks.

Best practice for listings with outbound links
My site contains a number of listings for charities that offer various sporting activities for people to get involved in order to raise money. As part of the listing we provide an outbound link for the user to find out more info about each of the charities and their activities. Currently these listings are blocked in the robots.txt for fear that we may be viewed as a 'link farm or spam site' (as there are hundreds of charities listed on the scrolling page) but these links out are genuine and provide benefits and are a useful resource for the user and not paid links. What I'd like to do is make these listings fully crawlable and indexable to increase our search traffic to these listing, but I'm not sure whether this would have a negative impact on our Pagerank with Google potentially viewing all these outbound links as 'bad' or 'paid links', Would removing the listing pages from our robots.txt and making all the outbound links 'nofollow' be the way forward to allow us to properly index the listings without being penalised as some kind of link farm or spam site? (N.B. I have no interest in passing link juice to the external charity websites)

Category Pages - Canonical, Robots.txt, Changing Page Attributes
A site has category pages as such: www.domain.com/category.html, www.domain.com/category-page2.html, etc... This is producing duplicate meta descriptions (page titles have page numbers in them so they are not duplicate). Below are the options that we've been thinking about: a. Keep meta descriptions the same except for adding a page number (this would keep internal juice flowing to products that are listed on subsequent pages). All pages have unique product listings. b. Use canonical tags on subsequent pages and point them back to the main category page. c. Robots.txt on subsequent pages. d. ? Options b and c will orphan or french fry some of our product pages. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thank you.
