Adding new content wanted to see if we are correct path
-
Hello SEO’ers.
This is my second post here on SEOmoz and I have a question / look it over type of deal.
I have been reading through the information I have found here on SEOmoz from the community and it has been very informative and helpful.
My question deals with my site http://www.tacticalbootstore.com
One of the things we have learned is we needed better content as what we had was too thin.
We have completely rewritten all of the manufacturer pages and are uploading them now 10/14 complete. This content I believe is about as unique as it will get.
New Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-m-74.html
Old Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/altama-boots-m-86.html
From these Manufacturer pages we have also written 3 other pages that are linked to from the manufacturer page
Buyers Guide Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-buying-guide-a-98.html
FAQ Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/frequently-asked-questions-about-bellville-boots-a-96.html
Sizing Information Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-sizing-chart-a-97.html
I believe this creates a virtual silo?
We are in the process of rewriting all of the item product descriptions as well as that content was too thin.
New Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/blackhawk-83bt02de-mens-desert-ops-boot-p-3916.html
Old Example here: http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/altama-mens-inch-exo-boots-p-4086.html
Please take note we have only uploaded the 1 new item description the rest of them still have thin content. We hope to have all of the products written and posted by week’s end.
Would you guys mind checking what I have submitted here and tell me if we are on the correct path or not?
Do you have any other ideas we could implement?
I really appreciate your time in looking at this for me. I hope one day to be able to contribute to the community as well with the knowledge I will learn here.
Thank you,
Chris

Egol,
Kind of the manufacturer pages was to create a virtual silo for that particular set of keywords.
I love the idea of the bigger pictures and we will implement this.
I also love the idea of the product pages linking out to "How To pages" as you state.
Now I just need to think of some How To's for Boots.
Thank you again for your comments they are very informative and much appreciated.

I think that you are making major improvements in your content. That should bring you long-tail keywords and help you avoid panda problems.
I am taking a different approach on my sites. For example, you have category pages with lots of paragraph text and not much written for each product an no buy buttons Instead of that I have no paragraphs above or below my products, however, each of my products has a two-to three sentence mini-description and a buy button. I also do not paginate my category pages. All of the products are on those pages. I might paginate if I had several dozen products... but if I have 50 or fewer I don't paginate.
I believe that makes a richer page for search, a page with more word diversity to pull long tail traffic, customers don't have to click through pages, they can buy quickly if they don't need more information, it makes a site with fewer pages and I believe that a compact site competes better than a site with a lot of pages.
Most of my product pages have a very large photo at the top of the page with description below and links to pages where "how to use" "how to select" "how to maintain" information can be found. Often a video. These have increased conversions and the informative pages rank very well in the SERPs.

Michael you have made a great point that I will not forget.
I know I think of content as the text only. Thanks for reminding me that it is also the pictures, videos etc....
-
Egol,
Thank you also for taking a look at this.
Can you make any other recommendations that you see that we could implement?
Thank you for your time.
Chris

This page has a nice improvement in content depth.
http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-m-74.html
One thing that you might consider is how that new content pushes your boot selection down the page. Maybe only the most essential above the boots and the rest below.
The new product pages look good too. Just be sure that they are all absolutely unique.
This hard work should pay, Keep at it.

You're very welcome...and don't underestimate the boost rich content can give a site. Do a Google search for "bmw m1 at monterey" and see who's #1 in both the image results and the organic results...with a super-weak link profile (it's just my own personal photo gallery site)...ahead of the big car magazines who covered that car

Michael,
Again thank you for your time in answering our question and providing us with additional info.

Hi Chris,
Yes, your text content looks good, and there's plenty of it.
And you're correct re: embedding the video. I usually use the option on YouTube when getting the embed code to "use old embed code", which gives you an <object>etc.; I do this simply because it's not clear to me that Google pays attention to what's in an iframe (the "new" embed code on YouTube uses an iframe). They might, but it seems to me that if Google (Panda) is mechanically inspecting your page to see what kinds of cool content you have, things that are easy to spot are embedded objects (which are probably interesting interactive elements, like a video or a virtual tour); I'm not sure that they'd go to the trouble to follow the iframe's link and then analyze what kind of content is in that iframed page. They SHOULD, but that may be too processing-intensive.</object>

Michael,
Thank you for taking the time to look at this. We will definitely work on your suggestions
The content is all fresh completely re-written to our site and is unique. It is not the standard manufacturer description. The new content was all written in house in the examples I showed. We should be done loading it all onto the site this week ending. Do you think it is enough?
We were looking at shooting our own videos and getting them to look like this Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmaoAzoIUa8
We were going to add a voice over though to point out the features of the boots. I apologize for not knowing when you say embed. Is it OK to take our own video post it to you tube and then embed it in our site?
Taking our own pictures we never thought of doing this but is definitely something we have the abilities to do and will work on it.
Any other ideas or suggestions or constructive criticism we are open to.
Any other creative minds out there see anything they could suggest to us?

Looking good, in general. Note that you have an opportunity to get a ranking boost by adding rich, original content...things like large images, embedded videos, etc.
Consider shooting a 1-2 minute video where you talk about the various features of the boot, what you like about it, significant differences, etc., and embed that in related pages.
Consider taking your own photos of the boots. Google most certainly knows whether you're using the same image the manufacturer has given out to all of your competitors. A quick check with Google Reverse Image Search shows many, many sites with the exact same image. If you want to make the Panda happy, show him both original TEXT and original IMAGES.

New Subdomain SEO questions
I have a main site - mysite.com. I just created a subdomain - leadform.mysite.com I plan to use the leadform.mysite.com as a 1 page lead form only. I will link to leadform.mysite.com from mysite.com and also from other websites I own (myothersite.com etc.) - filtering all traffic to this form to capture leads. (Note - the leadform.mysite.com has CNAME to other server that hosts the backend of the form) My questions are: How should I link from mysite.com to leadform.mysite.com? With dofollow or nofollow? (mysite.com has 1000's of pages and would link from every page with "get a quote' type button) 2) How should I link from myothersite.com to leadform.mysite.com? With dofollow or nofollow? Any SEO risk linking to leadform.mysite.com from an outside domain? (myothersite.com has 1000's of pages and would link from every page with "get a quote' type button) Does it make sense to build links from outside sites to leadform.mysite.com directly to try to get that lead capture page to rank on it's own? 4) Does it make sense to link back from leadform.mysite.com back to mysite.com for seo value? With dofollow or nofollow? Thanks in advance for any help.

Change of content
Hello, When you do a major change of content on a page I know it takes time to start seeing some results in terms of ranking. Let's say I make a change today expecting to see the first results of that change 2 months from now. Let's say in a month I decide to add some content and make again some minor changes. Do I have to wait another 2 months starting on the date I made my 2 nd changes to see some results or will I see the results of the 1 change as originally planned 2 months after my major content change ? Thank you,

301 redirects in Wordpress vs. making old posts that you no longer want your audience to see private.
I'm working on Wordpress at the moment changing the content of a page on my website. The page has a lot of educational information and each section is unique. I had to go through and edit each section on google documents and now I'm posting all the new pages and making the old pages private on wordpress. Is this a good idea? I'm worried google will still crawl my private education pages and think these are duplicates since the new pages somewhat resemble the old. Also, should I be 301 redirecting all the old education pages to the corresponding new ones even if they are private on wordpress? I understand that the 301 redirect should only be used if you want the old page to go to a new one. What i don't understand id weather this will still be relevant or work if I've already made the old page private on wordpress. Thank You!

I'm updating content that is out of date. What is the best way to handle if I want to keep old content as well?
So here is the situation. I'm working on a site that offers "Best Of" Top 10 list type content. They have a list that ranks very well but is out of date. They'd like to create a new list for 2014, but have the old list exist. Ideally the new list would replace the old list in search results. Here's what I'm thinking, but let me know if you think theres a better way to handle this: Put a "View New List" banner on the old page Make sure all internal links point to the new page Rel=canonical tag on the old list pointing to the new list Does this seem like a reasonable way to handle this?

Subcategories within "New Arrivals" section - duplicate content?
Hi there, My client runs an e-commerce store selling shoes that features a section called "New Arrivals" with subcategories, such as "shoes," "wedges," "boots," "sandals," etc. There are already main subcategories on the site that target these terms. These are specifically pages for "New Arrivals - Boots," etc. The shoes listed on each new arrivals subcategory page are also listed in the main subcategory page. Given that there is not really any search volume for "Brand + new arrivals in boots," but lots of search volume for "Brand + boots," what is the proper way to handle these new arrivals subcategory pages? Should each subcategory have a rel=canonical tag pointing to the main subcategory? Should they be de-indexed? Should I keep them all indexed but try to make the content as unique as possible? Thank you!

E-commerce Adding New Content - Blog vs New Page
I have an ecommerce site (www.brick-anew.com) focused on Fireplace products and we also have a separate blog (fireplacedecorating.com) focused on fireplace decorating. My ecommerce site needs new content, pages, internal links, etc... for more Google love, attention, and rankings. My question is this: Should I add a blog to the ecommerce site for creating new content or should I just add and create new pages? I have lots of ideas for relevant new content related to fireplaces. Are there any SEO benefits to a blog over new static pages? Thanks! SAM

Duplicate content for images
On SEOmoz I am getting duplicate errors for my onsite report. Unfortunately it does not specify what that content is... We are getting these errors for our photo gallery and i am assuming that the reason is some of the photos are listed in multiple categories. Can this be the problem? what else can it be? how can we resolve these issues?

Why duplicate content for same page?
Hi, My SEOMOZ crawl diagnostic warn me about duplicate content. However, to me the content is not duplicated. For instance it would give me something like: (URLs/Internal Links/External Links/Page Authority/Linking Root Domains) http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110516 /1/1/31/2 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110711 0/0/1/0 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110811 0/0/1/0 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110911 0/0/1/0 Why is this seen as duplicate content when it is only URL with campaign tracking codes to the same content? Do I need to clean this? Thanks for answer
