Penguin & Panda: Geographic Penalities?
-
Has anyone ever come across information about a website appearing strongly in SERP's in one region, but poorly in another? (ie: great in Europe, not so great in N. America)
If so, perhaps it is a Panda or Penguin issue?
-
There are many factor which influences a site's ranking in one region or another.
Google is heading toward personalized results based on user location, but that's no panda or penguin issue.
Some things to consider are:
- the location of your hosting server
- the tld of your site
- the location and tld of your linking sites
- the location you set up in your gwtools or in your buiness page
- the content of your site, if it's english it may be more british focused or american
- and other ranking factors which only google knows

How to best add affiliate links in a way that minimizes panda risk?
We have a site of about 100.000 pages that is getting several million of visitors per year via organic search. We plan to add about 50.000 new pages gradually in the next couple of months and would like to add affiliate links to the new pages. All these 50.000 new pages will have unique quality data that a team has been researching for a while. I would like to add in the area under the fold or towards the end of the pages in an unobstrusive way affiliate links to about 5 different affiliate programs with affiliate links customized to page content and of real value to visitors. Since affiliate links are one of the factors that may trigger panda I am a bit nervous whether we should add the affiliate links and if there is any way of implementing the affiliate links in a way that they may be less likely to trigger panda. E.g. would you consider hiding affiliate links from google by linking to intermediate URL (which I would mark as noindex nofolllow) on our domain which then redirects to the final affiliate landing page (but google may notice via chrome or android data) ? Any other idea?

I was hit bad by Penguin on 4-24-12.
I was hit bad by Penguin on 4-24-12. Never received a bad link warning from Google but I do have lots of bad links from a SEO company years ago. I canceled with them and they kept sending automated links with the same anchor text. I even asked Google to remove the bad links years before the penguin update I have removed many bad links by contacting webmasters and have used disavowal tool twice. 6 Months later still no improvement. Is it possible that Google needs more time to disavowal bad links ? What about 301 redirect to a new domain? Anyone ever have long term success with 301. What about 301 after using the disavowal tool any luck? What about changing my domain, will it take months for site to move up, anyone with experience trying this? Let me know any ideas. Thanks

Website Survived Last Year Penguin & Panda Updates but dropped Jan 2013?
Hi, I have a website which was gaining good rankings through 2012 and even looked in pretty good shape after all of the Penguin and Panda updates in 2012 but in Jan 2013 the sites rankings have been very poor as it dropped for all terms. It is still in the index and webmaster tools shows the sites keywords but is showing places of 100 or so rather than 10 - 16 in the seeps. The website is www.mywebsitehosting.org Any ideas why this has dropped in January and what can I do to fix it? Thanks. P.s I have made a change to the homepage content but inner pages for the website also dropped to which have the same content as they did a few months ago.

Reducing pages with canonical & redirects
We have a site that has a ridiculous number of pages. Its a directory of service providers that is organized by city and sub-category of the vertical. Each provider is on the main city page, then when you click on a category, it will only show those folks who offer that subcategory of this service. example: colorado/denver - main city page colorado/denver/subcat1 - subcategory page There are 37 subcategories. So, 38 pages that essentially have the same content - minus a provider or two - for each city. There are approx 40K locations in our database. So rough math puts us at 1.5 million results pages, with 97% of those pages being duplicate content! This is clearly a problem. But many of these obscure pages do rank and get traffic. A fair amount when you aggregate all these pages together. We are about to go through a redesign and want to consolidate pages so we can reduce the dupe content, get crawl budget allocated to more meaningful pages, etc. Here's what I'm thinking we should do with this site, and I would love to have your input: Canonicalize Before the redesign use the canonical tag on all the sub-category pages and push all the value from those pages (colorado/denver/subcat1, /subcat2, /subcat3... etc) to the main city page (colorado/denver/subcat1) 301 Redirect On the new site (we're moving to a new CMS) we don't publish the duplicate sub-category pages and do 301 redirects from the sub-category URLs to the main city page urls. We'd still have the sub-categories (keywords) on-page and use some Javascript filtering to narrow results. We could cut to the chase and just do the redirects, but would like to use canonicalization as a proof of concept internally at my company that getting rid of these pages is a good thing, or at least wont have a negative impact on traffic. i.e. by the time we are ready to relaunch traffic and value has been transfered to the /state/city page Trying to create the right plan and build my argument. Any feedback you have will help.
