Is it good/bad to place a press release on a third party website as well as your own?

I have read that if a Company issues a press release via a third part service (e.g. PR Web) it is best not to place the release on the company’s own website due to negative SEO effects. Is this the case? I‘d really appreciate others thoughts on this.

I agree with Philip.
If you place a press release on your site and also place it on a popular press release site there is a very good chance that the press release site will outrank your site in the SERPs. Your site could also be filtered from the search results (google does not like duplicate content.)
Also, part of the Panda update was about sites that display dupe content. If your site has a lot of dupe content it could be demoted in the SERPs across the entire domain. In these situations duplicate content can harm you big time.
Also, the best way to inform Google that you are publishing duplicate content is to place a link in the press release to a duplicate copy on your own domain. Google has been exterminating linked duplicates for a long time.
Finally, the best way to get your rankings lowered is to give content to other powerful websites that competes in the same SERPs as your own site. Its not a good idea to feed your competitors and create new competitors.

If the press release is likely to earn links (eg bloggers treat it as the primary source) then clearly it makes sense to host it on your own site. But - and it's a big but - your site may not be crawled by the engines sufficiently quickly for the demands of today's news media. Once a story is out, it must be findable. Therefore using a PR site that gets crawled regularly makes sense. A smart workaround is to publish the release on your site and on a PR site with a link on the PR site page to the corresponding page on your site. that should ensure your page gets crawled more quickly and the engines should treat your page as the primary source. Of course all this assumes that you have some real news to announce.

As in my opinion full press releases should not be placed on the own website. First: it won't help due to duplicate content. Secondly the press website is usualy stronger. They rank higher. The traffic comes from the press release.
If you like to use part of this content, you could write an abstract with a link to the original press release for those who'd like to read the entire article. There you have best of both worlds.

I don't think it would harm you to post the press release on your site. There is a common misconception that you get penalized by Google if you have the same content as other sites, but this is not the case. Large news sites like the Seattle Times republish or syndicate articles all the time. Search engines simply try to omit duplicate content from search results so that you don't get 10 links that all go to the same article.

Duplicate content will not help you rank much, but it will not harm you either. Search engines will decide who to give credit for original content, the second page will not get credit but will not be harmed either.

In Google SERPs some companies / government agencies have a Google-generated card for their organization and it references their Wikipedia page. It does not show for all companies /orgs that have a Wikipedia page. What is the criteria to have it shown?

My 40 year old, well established business has a brand name that I think is hurting my SEO. Need advice please.
Our business brand name has words in it which when we were using it as our domain name, was a) bad for our SEO and b) got our emails marked as spam in our client's inboxes. This was not a problem when we first got online, years ago. It eventually became problematic, but we didn't realize it for some time. When we realized the issue, we simply changed our domain name to something more SEO friendly, using exact match keywords. This was fine for a while, but eventually, algorithms changed again, and now with Google putting an emphasis on Brand Names and not looking as kindly on exact match keyword type domains, we are again at a place where we don't know what to do. We can't change our brand name. I don't want to post our real name or business here, but I will give an example. Brand Name: Living Free Travel The Issue: "Free Travel" gets blocked by spam filters, gets us useless traffic from people looking for free travel (which makes out bounce rates very high), gets our domain blacklisted. The Solution: travel2europe.com is the website of Living Free Travel The New Issue: travel2europe.com is not our brand, and probably doesn't look like one to Google, especially since on our site, travel2europe.com is never really mentioned because it is only our domain, not our brand. "Living Free Travel" is generally the anchor text for travel2europe.com wherever we are linked to. We assume this mismatch is problematic for us in ways we don't even know. Are we screwed? How to Host Microsites: Mission Critical or Six of One / Half Dozen of the Other?
Hello, fellow Mozzers! Been racking my brain. Thanks for your help on this one! I am in the process of putting together several microsites for our marketing agency. The sites feature similar theme and design elements, but are focused on delivering a customized industry-specific visitor experience with unique navigation, brand messaging, services, case studies, etc. I am struggling with whether I should host as entirely separate websites, as subdomains of the parent site, or as separate WP installs in subfolders of the main domain. I have been leaning toward the sub-folder option to share domain authority and keep our SEO efforts consolidated. But I am also concerned that the microsite "home pages" will underperform as sub-folder pages, versus being an actual home page of a unique domain or sub-domain. Is this a six-of-one or half-dozen of the other situation, or are there some important considerations I'm missing here? Thank you for your help here!

How to Force Merge 2 Place Listings (Both Incorrect & Different) for Same Business

I'm not sure what action to follow as nothing online seems to describe my Google Place situation - trying to merge 2 completely incorrect business listings for our company, that are also not identical. We have 2 listings on Google Places for our 1 company but a recent address number change has added further complication to already incorrect and different listings. our first/oldest listing was created by google but with incomplete business name, wrong map pin, completely wrong address, but shows our trip advisor reviews. created by us a year ago (we didn't realize the dupe issues) with full business name, correct address at the time (now incorrect since address number change), correct map pin, full description photos and info. This does not link to our trip advisor reviews. How to merge these when they aren't curently identical or correct? All online help seems to explain identical dupes but not this situation. What updates I tried recently: After some research, I changed all citations on the web to no.2 business name (except trip advisor who would not change), our new address number and then updated our no.2 address listing. But has stayed pending for months. It seems to be live, but still with the old incorrect address that does not match citations or our website. When I tried claiming both places with same account it showed the same pending new info I updated for no.2 in dashboard (so I can't edit no.1), but this data is not is not live on either. Last week I decided to do something radical, so logged in with a different account to reclaim no.1 and copied all information pending in no.2 to no.1 so that they should be exact same and hopefully force to merge. Both are pending and 2 different accounts now. What else can I do? We can rank locally while the 2 listings are like this. Should I call Google helpline and explain?0 -

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?
This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. Facebook Like my website or fan page??
Should I want people facebook liking my website or my fan page? Is there a way to link the two? Here is my dilemma... People liking my website will obviously have an effect on rankings within bing and google possibly. BUT - People liking my fan page will allow me to engage with them in the future about givaways, sales and so on. I'm stuck, is there a way to link these? Or if not, which do you recommend?
