Would Google Call These Pages Duplicate Content?
-
Our Web store, http://www.audiobooksonline.com/index.html, has struggled with duplicate content issues for some time. One aspect of duplicate content is a page like this: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/out-of-publication-audio-books-book-audiobook-audiobooks.html.
When an audio book title goes out-of-publication we keep the page at our store and display a http://www.audiobooksonline.com/out-of-publication-audio-books-book-audiobook-audiobooks.html whenever a visitor attempts to visit a specific title that is OOP. There are several thousand OOP pages.
Would Google consider these OOP pages duplicate content?
-
I'm confused. When a book goes out of print, does the URL change to this long OOP html page? Or does that book's URL then redirect to this page? Or *(shudders) do you make the OOP page re-titled to whatever the OOP book's page was?
If it were me I'd do the first scenario here. It's essentially the same concept as a 404.
-
Yes that is duplicate content, you should make these pages return a 404 instead. or leave the content in place with a sold out banner or something.
Something I don't like is your index.htm on your home page, people how link to you are likely to link to http://www.audiobooksonline.com/ you will then get a 301 redirect to http://www.audiobooksonline.com/index.html
this will leak link juice, as all 301's leak link juice just the same as a link does, 155 if we go by the original published Google algorithm. Also your internal pages link to http://www.audiobooksonline.com and are once again redirected to http://www.audiobooksonline.com/index.html
-
yes larry that is fine. so long as it is a single URL with a single HTML file on it, there is no duplicate issues. If you want to clarify I would suggest (if you aren't an SEOmoz pro member) to use a sitemap generator to ensure it isn't crawling multiple pages... But if that page is only listed once (and from what you are saying here that should be the case) then you have no duplicate content issues.
It's just the same as linking to one page from every page on your website. A redirect doesn't work much differently (although it does drop a small amount of linkjuice.)
You might consider no-crawling that OOP page anyway if you're still concerned. Not sure why you would need that one indexed in the first place.
Good luck to you!

We use only one URL for the OOP pages. It is 301 redirected from the each unique OOP title's page. Based on what you said, I am understanding that this is fine. Correct?
-
Hi Larry
Couple of questions - is that the only URL for the OOP pages, or are there other versions of the page and/or URL that exist?
If there are multiple pages, then that is definitely duplicate content. However, that can quite easily be fixed. If you add this code to the head tag of all those OOP pages, it will prevent Google from indexing the pages (thus not seeing them as duplicate):
That way you can keep the page for the user but not have to worry about duplicate content. I would do this anyway even if there is only one version of the page, as the page is thin on content as it is.
If you are displaying that image on other URLs that used to have products on them, but have gone OOP, then those multiple URLs and pages would be duplicate. Again, if you add the above code into the head text, it removes the problem. You could also 301 redirect the URL of the product page to the OOP page. For example, if you had a page for a product called: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/examplerecord.html that is now OOP, you could put in a 301 redirect to the http://www.audiobooksonline.com/out-of-publication-audio-books-book-audiobook-audiobooks.html. page and it wouldn't be duplicate. You can learn more about redirection here.
Hope this helps.

Google+ Contibutor to: Link To Main Domain or Content Page?
Which is the best practice for the link to claim authorship for a guest post? I have tried both the main domain URL in the "contributor to" section of my Google plus and the page URL where the post is and both show my picture when testing in the Structured Data Testing Tool. Which is best to use? Thanks in advance.

Over 700+ duplicate content pages -- help!
I just signed up for SEO Moz pro for my site. The initial report came back with over 700+ duplicate content pages. My problem is that while I can see why some of the content is duplicated on some of the pages I have no idea why it's coming back as duplicated. Is there a tutorial for a novie on how to read the duplicate content report and what steps to take? It's an e-commerce website and there is some repetitive content on all the product pages like our "satisfaction guaranteed" text and the fabric material... and not much other text. There's not a unique product description because an image speaks for itself. Could this be causing the problem? I have lots of URLs with over 50+ duplicates. Thx for any help.

Duplicate Content and URL Capitalization
I have multiple URLs that SEOMoz is reporting as duplicate content. The reason is that there are characters in the URL that may, or may not, be capitalized depending on user input. A couple examples are: www.househitz.com/Pennsylvania/Houses-for-sale www.househitz.com/Pennsylvania/houses-for-sale www.househitz.com/Pennsylvania/Houses-for-rent www.househitz.com/Pennsylvania/houses-for-rent There are currently thousands of instances of this on the site. Is this something I should spend effort to try and resolve (may not be minor effort), or should I just ignore it and move on?

Local Search | Website Issue with Duplicate Content (97 pages)
Hi SEOmoz community. I have a unique situation where I’m evaluating a website that is trying to optimize better for local search and targeting 97 surrounding towns in his geographical location. What is unique about this situation is that he is ranking on the 1st and 2nd pages of the SERPs for his targeted keywords, has duplicate content on 97 pages to his site, and the search engines are still ranking the website. I ran the website’s url through SEOmoz’s Crawl Test Tool and it verified that it has duplicate content on 97 pages and has too many links (97) per page. Summary: Website has 97 duplicate pages representing each town, with each individual page listing and repeating all of the 97 surrounding towns, and each town is a link to a duplicate page. Question: I know eventually the site will not get indexed by the Search Engines and not sure the best way to resolve this problem – any advice?

Is 100% duplicate content always duplicate?
Bit of a strange question here that would be keen on getting the opinions of others on. Let's say we have a web page which is 1000 lines line, pulling content from 5 websites (the content itself is duplicate, say rss headlines, for example). Obviously any content on it's own will be viewed by Google as being duplicate and so will suffer for it. However, given one of the ways duplicate content is considered is a page being x% the same as another page, be it your own site or someone elses. In the case of our duplicate page, while 100% of the content is duplicate, the page is no more than 20% identical to another page so would it technically be picked up as duplicate. Hope that makes sense? My reason for asking is I want to pull latest tweets, news and rss from leading sites onto a site I am developing. Obviously the site will have it's own content too but also want to pull in external.

Duplicate Content Issue
Hi Everyone, I ran into a problem I didn't know I had (Thanks to the seomoz tool) regarding duplicate content. my site is oxford ms homes.net and when I built the site, the web developer used php to build it. After he was done I saw that the URL's looking like this "/blake_listings.php?page=0" and I wanted them like this "/blakes-listings" He changed them with no problem and he did the same with all 300 pages or so that I have on the site. I just found using the crawl diagnostics tool that I have like 3,000 duplicate content issues. Is there an easy fix to this at all or does he have to go in and 301 Redirect EVERY SINGLE URL? Thanks for any help you can give.

Duplicate Content Question
Just signed up for pro and did my first diagnostic check - I came back with something like 300 duplicate content errors which suprised me because every page is unique. Turns out my pages are listed as www.sportstvjobs.com and just sportstvjobs.com does that really count as duplicate? and if so does anyone know what I should be doing differently? I thought it was just a canonical issue, but best I can tell I have the canonical in there but this still came up as a duplicate error....maybe I did canonical wrong, or its some other issue? Thanks Brian Clapp
