Should we include our header logo in a sprite or leave it as a regular image?
-
We are combining the images in our header and footer into sprites. We noticed that when we include our header logo in the sprite, we lose the "alt" text associated with the header logo.
Is this undesirable? Would it be better to leave the logo in our header as an image with "alt" text?

Thank you to you both. Agreed that testing is really the only way to know. I doubt that the pagespeed is going to be significantly impacted by the logo alone...but we won't know until we try it. Then we can decide which way to go.

Like BeardCo says, there are benefits to both approaches. The only way to know for sure is to test it. ALT text does have some SEO benefit, but it's not going to make or break your rankings. My guess is it won't impact your rankings either way, but test and see what happens.

I think its important to keep your logo as an image to keep your "alt text". It really depends on what you are trying to achieve. It sounds to me that you are trying to increase your speed optimization of your page which directly can affect your SEO. If your site is optimized and you can keep your logo in as an image I would keep it. If you making your logo into a sprite increases you page speed a lot and gives it a big boost in performance (highly doubt it) than do it.

Are pages not included in navigation given less "weight"
Hi, we recently updated our website and our main navigation was dramatically slimmed down to just three pages and no drop down under those. Yet we have many more important pages, which are linked to once on one of those main three pages. However, will this hurt those other pages because they are not included in navigation (some of which were starting to get good traction in rankings)?

Image URL's and naming
We're re-platforming on Magento and wondering about our images. 1. Should I be concerned about 301 redirects for my images. 2. Is there a "best practice" path for images? or is just the name important? Right now, all our images are in /meta/images/sm or /lg or /xlg. Since we're re-platforming, we're wondering if we should change the urls. But, I'm assuming this would require all of them to have 301 redirects and with all the other redirects, I'm not sure this is really feasible. thanks for any suggestions on this.

Can someone suggest a good wordpress plugin for compressing images?
I am building a new website and it has 500+ photo images. I've got less than 100 in there at the moment and the page speed is already very slow. I'm trying to reduce the size of the images before uploading but without a photoshop application it is very difficult. Are there any great plugins for wordpress that can help?

Text in Images vs. Alt tags
Hi on my homepage i h ave multiple images They have the appropriate alt text for each image, but the text which the image displays is not written into the page and styled using CSS rather than placing text within an image. Is this a issue worth correcting, or is it sufficient to have just alt text for each image. Any major pros from having putting the text in the image into the CMS using appropriate CSS styling to achieve the same effect.

What's the best SEO option for jQuery image carousels?
My client wants a fancy jquery carousel at the top of their home page, as is all the rage these days. I would like to add some nice SEO friendly text to that carousel, but I'm not sure how best to do that..I assume that by keeping the text which will appear in the carousel in divs on the page, which will be swapped out as the images cycle, it should still be easily picked up by search engines?
