Canonical home page
-
I have a site that shows duplicate page content for:
www.autoserviceexpertsonline and www.autoserviceexpertsonline/index.html
When looking at the files using the cms (intuit) file manager, I only see the /index.html version.
I added the Caononical tag referencing/pointing to both the domain name only and then changed to .../index.html
No matter how I code this, the seomoz On-Site SEO Grader still has a problem with it.
Is this a bug with the Grading program or am I doing something wrong?
Please help as I think this is causing me problems with Google and I'd like to get this right for future sites I will be working on.
Thanks,
Bill

No problem at all - good luck!

Thank you very much for the clear answer and the time it took you look at the site and write your post.
I will follow the instructions and see if things clear up. I have this site set up on Campaign mode, so tomorrow it should get a full crawl and then we'll know if the Duplicate Page error goes away (which is the reason for this whole exercise).
Have a blessed day.

Hi Bill,
I've just had a look at your site and the canonical tag is set as:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.autoserviceexpertsonline/index.html"/>
I'd advise changing it so that index.html isn't included (simply because that's the most likely way that people are going to link to you and how they'll get to your site, so it makes sense that the canonical tag points to the most popular 'page' in the eyes of both users and search engines). So, you'd end up with:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.autoserviceexpertsonline/"/>
The error that you're getting through the Report Card may appear if you're checking the base URL of your site (http://www.autoserviceexpertsonline/) as SEOMoz would see your canonical tag pointing to a different place (index.html) and therefore being incorrect.
My advice would be to do the fix (as above) and recheck your page through SEOMoz immediately - you shouldn't need to wait until the following Tuesday when using the report card tool as it does an immediate refresh of the page content.
Also, to explain why you only see index.html in the file manager (in simple terms) is that the webserver (apache) sees index.html as being the base file for your site. So, when someone goes to http://www.autoserviceexpertsonline/ apache grabs the index.html file and shows it on the page.
Hope that's helpful - let me know if you have any more questions,
Matt

I think it is coded correctly.
No, I'm not waiting until Tuesday... didn't realize there was a weekly time-frame on the SEO Report Card Tool.

Hi Bill,
Two questions:
-
Are you sure you formatted the tag properly?
-
Are you waiting until the following Tuesday for your site to be recrawled?

Critical Page Problems.
As I design my new pages I place them into the page optimizer. When I place the keyword in that I am trying to rank for my page is coming up as an A. With that said, I am still receiving error messages with critical fix results. Here is a screenshot of this: http://screencast.com/t/DuUrP8xM Curious on how I should fix this? The pages are directly on my blog which makes it accessible to search engines ( So I think). Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Page Speed
Google recommends a page load speed of 1.4 seconds, is it recommended to have that page speed for every page on the site, or just the landing pages. Is there a tool that will check the load speed of every page on a site and report the slow pages? The free online tools only check one page at a time.

Landing Pages
Howdy Guys, We currently have around 19 landing pages that are near enough identical for each make of car. The content on each page isn't identical but you can tell its a template. Do you think we should change this and just target models instead of makes. Thanks, Scott

What does Canonical mean?
Hi, I was wondering what is meant by canonical? I ran a test on my site and in the notices, SEOMOZ came back with a total of 90 canonicals. As far as I can tell, it refers to the preferred page (not really sure what that means though). I thought initially it was talking about duplicate content, but all the pages are totally different. There is no duplicate content on any of he pages that it lists. So I'm not sure how to fix this. Thanks for the help. Don

Is it ok to point internal links to index.html home page rather than full www
I thought I saw this somewhere on SEOmoz before but I was so busy by the time I got around to work on my SEO on my site, I realized I have this happening and can't recall if it is a problem which takes away from my ranking. If my www.website.com is ranking well but I have internal menu links pointing to www.website.com/index.html instead of www.website.com will that take away from my www.website.com rankings? Should I change all my menu links that point to /index.html to the full website url path www.website.com ?

Home Page Content - In a Div?
Is putting content in a div so it doesn't muck up the look of the home page create a problem in doing well organically? Example - http://www.callawaygardens.com. We have lots of clients that want no text on the home page and we are trying to figure out how to do this while still ranking well organically. What are your thoughts? Can we get in trouble? Are there negative impacts with SEO doing it like this? Thank you!

What is important for page rank?
I have heard quality is the most important factor for page rank but after the 7 Nov 11 PR update I am no longer a believer. The PR on my home page dropped from 4 to 3 and the rest of my inside pages remained the same even though I have added a significant amount of content since the previous update and kept it fresh. Any thoughts on this most recent PR update?
