Rankings UP, rankings DOWN - why?
-
Last week, I had 14 keywords go up and less than 5 go down. I was so thrilled!
Except this week, I had 10 go up and 14 go down!
How can I figure out what is going on? I am up and down 30+ spots with Google. I'd really like to stay up. My site is pretty new, just a few months. I am still fiddling around with settings trying to follow all the advice I read. (robot meta tags, title tag)
I didn't change any content in the last week. Does SEOmoz analyze the ranking data?
-
Hey There
First thing you might want to do is supplement weekly Moz rankings by using Webmaster Tools position data (under search queries) and you can filter by keyword - and you'll get you're average daily position straight from Google's data. You can also supplement Moz rankings data with something like AuthorityLabs. There's a list of rank checkers I put together here.
This is because it can be tricky to see what's going on with weekly data.
If/when you have that - it sounds like this is the "Google Dance" (when rankings jump all around). This can be common for new sites, especially as Google is just figuring it out etc.
Has traffic changed much?
I honestly would focus mostly on continuing to create the best site possible. Make sure each page is only targeting one main keyword.

It means for my site (APQC.org) for example if a site links to one of our pages the anchor text for the link is American Productivity & Quality Center and not 'site focused on productivity and benchmarking'
Branded keyword anchor text is Coca-Cola regular keyword anchor text is soda.
Get it? Believe me I know all these SEO terms and stuff can make your head spin. Hope this helps.
-
Sorry what do you mean by branded? I am new to this.
The anchor text was my website's name.
-
I have no evidence to prove this theory but here goes: I think Google is beginning to weight brand centered anchor text higher and so it's really helping a site like mine whose links have brand anchor text.
If your anchor text on high value links isn't branded text that could be issue. Once again it's just my theory and feel free to punch holes in it if you like.

I rank better with bing and yahoo but I don't get many CLICKS.
I have no idea why I went up so much last week because I hadn't done much. I thought maybe because I got two quality backlinks on related blog with a PR of 5. But then why would they drop this week?
It is just frustrating not knowing!

Since your site is new that could be a reason for rankings swing. If you did something with title tags that could be an issue. In my experience Title tags have been a huge problem and a huge area for gain once we got them fixed and well done.
Also are your Bing/Yahoo rankings very different from your google rankings? Our yahoo/Bing rankings are all over the place the last 4 months while google has been stable but I've had the opposite as well.

Page Speed or Site Speed which one does Google considered a ranking signal
I've read many threads online which proves that website speed is a ranking factor. There's a friend whose website scores 44 (slow metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Despite that his website is slow, he outranks me on Google search results. It confuses me that I optimized my website for speed, but my competitor's slow site outperforms me. On Six9ja.com, I did amazing work by getting my target score which is 100 (fast metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Coming to my Google search console tool, they have shown that some of my pages have average scores, while some have slow scores. Google search console tool proves me wrong that none of my pages are fast. Then where did the fast metrics went? Could it be because I added three Adsense Javascript code to all my blog posts? If so, that means that Adsense code is slowing website speed performance despite having an async tag. I tested my blog post speed and I understand that my page speed reduced by 48 due to the 3 Adsense javascript codes added to it. I got 62 (Average metric score). Now, my site speed is=100, then my page speed=62 Does this mean that Google considers page speed rather than site speed as a ranking factor? Title Tag Capitalization Impact on SERP Rankings and Click Through Rates
My company made a branding decision to use lowercase for all of our title tags. This, of course, means that our titles on SERPs are all lower case. Overwhelmingly, it seems that websites use title case. This makes me wonder if we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Does using lower case titles negatively impact our rankings and/or click through rates? Is there any data out there suggesting that title case has a better click through rate than lower case? Thanks for reading!

How can I track my rankings on Google Images?
I noticed a small amount of traffic coming from a particular very generic keyword. Being pleasantly surprised that we are ranking for this, and after some digging, I found that we are actually ranking in Google images, rather than in the web results. How can I track whether other keywords are ranking in Google images? I use Rank Checker to track keywords in the main web results, but this doesn't have a function for Google Images. Help please - thanks.

Rank Tracker - above 50
Hi, I have a blog and would like to know where it ranks for certain keywords. Unfortunately however, it's well above the top 50, is there any way of getting its exact position or will Moz only show position 50 and above. Thank you in advance. JG.

Improved keyword ranking but less traffic
Hello fellow mozzers! My collegue and I are a bit puzzled in regards to our recent website statistics. In november 2013, we upgraded the technological platform of our website to be fully HTML5 coded, and implemented the schema.org Products scheme to systematically tag all our products on the site. To prevent too much loss of visitors, we created a 301-redirect table from almost all our old URL's to the specific new ones, as we implemented a new URL structure as well. The first few months were bumpy as expected, making a huge drop in rankings before rising up again. Our keyword rankings are better then ever (60% of the keywords in top 3, average competition, 25% more on first SERP) but our number of visits dropped by about 10%. Our bounce rate went down from 20% to 14%, our returning visits are stable, but our new visitors stats dropped by 25% as well. This comparison was made between equal periods in the current year and last year, using organic data stats. (new technical platform vs. the old one) What could be the reason that our number of visits dropped 10% while our keyword ranking is better then ever? We don't have any manual penalties in GWT and can't understand why visits would drop so much while ranking improved. May it be so easy that there's just less search volume on our ranked content or does anyone have other ideas? Thank you all in advance!

What does "on first page" mean in seomoz ranking reports?
Hi - When reports here show numbers of keywords appearing "on first page", there must be some implicit assumption made about the number of results listed per page. 1. Can anyone tell me what that assumption is? Is it 10? 20? 2. What about universal results Local links? If the answer to number one is, for instance, 20 results per page, then are there any assumptions made about the number of universal results Local links included? I'm just trying to understand what the reports mean. Thanks, Tim

500 errors and impact on google rankings
Since the launch of our newly designed website about 6 months ago, we are experiencing a high number of 500 server errors (>2000). Attempts to resolve these errors have been unsuccessful to date. We have just started to notice a consistent and sustained drop in rankings despite our hard sought efforts to correct. Two questions... can very high levels of 500 errors adversely effect our google rankings? And, if this is the case, what type of specialist (what are they called) has expertise to investigate and fix this issue. I should also mention that the sitemap also goes down on a regular basis, which some have stated is due to the size of the site (>500 pages). Don't know if they're part of the same problem? Thanks.

Why is Benetton ranking with tracking parameters?
For this search: https://www.google.com/search?q=benetton&pws=0 I see the following URL ranking #1 http://www.benetton.com/?utm_source=centrum.sk&utm_medium=listing Why is this happening? I could likely figure it out but I'm busy so I was hoping someone could dig around and let me know 🙂 Anyone? Incidentally, Benetton is in the middle of a massive campaign at the moment so it's strange timing for them to have this showing up and screwing with their GA tracking... EDIT: I should clarify, Benetton is not a client - I don't know anyone who works for or with them. I'm just curious why this is showing up. cmNWx.png
