Link Reclimation & Redirects
-
Hello,
I'm in the middle of a link reclamation project wherein we're identifying broken links, links pointing to dupe content etc.
I found a forgotten co-brand which is effectively dupe content across 8 sub-domains, some of which have a significant number of links (200+ linking domains | 2k+ in-bound links).
Question for the group is what's the optimal redirect option?
Option 1: set 301 and maintain 1:1 URL mapping
- will pass all equity to applicable PLPs and theoretically improve rank for related keyword(s).
- requires a bit more configuration time and will likely have small effect on rank given links are widely distributed across URLs.
Option 2: set 301 to redirect all requests to the associated sub-domain e.g. foo.mybrand.cobrand.com/page1.html and foo.mybrand.cobrand.com/page2 both redirect to foo.mybrand.com/
- will accumulate all equity at the sub-domain level which theoretically will be roughly distributed throughout underlying pages and will limit risk of penalty to that sub-domain.
Option 3: set 301 to redirect all requests to our homepage.
- easiest to configure & maintain, will accumulate the maximum equity on a priority page which should positively affect domain authority.
- run risk of being penalized for accumulating links en mass, risk penalty for spammy links on our primary sub-domain www, won't pass keyword specific equity to applicable pages.
To be clear, I've done an initial scrub of anchor text and there were no signs of spam.
I'm leaning towards #3, but interested in others perspectives.
Cheers,
Stefan -
The optimal redirect for both visitors and search engines is to keep the structure as it was, meaning #1.
The optimal solution also follows your options numbering, meaning that for both search engine and visitors the last options is the least desirable.
The optimal solution workload wise, is the exact opposite, as it often is.
Depending on how well related the content is, it might be possible to opt for #2 but it is very rare that option #3 would work well as the content of the entire website, including all its subdomains, has to be extremely well related and basically only cover one single topic.
A few simple questions might help:
-
Are all the topics of every single page of the forgotten co-brands present on the homepage? If not, then #3 is not a very good option.
-
Are all the topics of every single page of the forgotten co-brands present on the associated subdomain? If not, then #2 is not a very good option.
Another thing to consider is the amount of pages that will be re-directed. I actually have a problem with that at the moment, as I am really not sure how well that will be treated by the search engines.
IMHO you should look at how the redirects are for people first, bots second and equity/domain authority/etc. last. Not to mention that I think that no matter which group you put first, the optimal solution out of the 3 options stays the same as your numbering anyway.

+1 to option 1 and Takeshi's response.
You should consider user experience as a huge decision-making factor in this. Landing on a page the user is looking for will ultimately provide a better user experience and therefore you should go with that option. That said, it's also slightly better for SEO purposes imo.
I have 2 sites I monitor. One I was allowed to redesign and the other is a disaster. Of the two sites, they both get similar keyword ranking and similar traffic. But about 65% more leads are generated through the purdier site.
TL;DR - make it purdy, make me happy = win.

I would personally go with Option 1. The purpose of 301 redirects is to say that a piece of content has permanently moved from one location to another. Therefore the content on the old location should point to the content on the new location, not the homepage.
Google will often not pass link equity if the new page is completely different from the original, which is why redirecting a bunch of domains to a new site isn't going to pass all their link equity to the new site. Like you pointed out, you will also dilute the value of the keyword relevancy.
It's also bad from a user perspective-- if you have a lot of links going to your co-brand, and people are clicking on those links, having them taken to your homepage is a poor user experience, and can result in increased bounce rate. If those visitors are getting to your co-brand through search, it could even be a negative signal for the search engines.
301s should be directed at content that's as similar as possible to the original content, that's the general rule.

Redirect Chains
Hi There, I have had conducted a few migrations recently and have a common issue which is this: HTTP (old site) -> HTTPS (old site) -> (HTTPS) (new site) Which causes a redirect chain. How should you prevent this before migration or fix it after migration? Cheers.

Going from 302 redirect to 301 redirect weeks after changing URL structure
I made a small change on an ecommerce site that had big impacts I didn't consider... About six weeks ago in an effort to clean up one of many SEO-related problems on an ecommerce site, I had a developer rewrite the URLs to replace underscores with hyphens and redirect all pages throughout the site to that page with the new URL structure. We didn't immediately update our sitemap to reflect the changes (bad!) and I just discovered all the redirects are 302s... Since these changes, most of the pages have a page authority of 1 and we have dropped several spots in organic search. If we were to setup 301 redirects for the pages that we changed the URL structure would there be any changes in organic search placement and page authority or is it too late?

.htaccess 301 Redirect Help! Specific Redirects and Blanket Rule
Hi there, I have the following domains: OLD DOMAIN: domain1.co.uk NEW DOMAIN: domain2.co.uk I need to create a .htaccess file that 301 redirects specific, individual pages on domain1.co.uk to domain2.co.uk I've searched for hours to try and find a solution, but I can't find anything that will do what I need. The pages on domain1.co.uk are all kinds of filenames and extensions, but they will be redirected to a Wordpress website that has a clean folder structure. Some example URL's to be redirected from the old website: http://www.domain1.co.uk/charitypage.php?charity=357 http://www.domain1.co.uk/adopt.php http://www.domain1.co.uk/register/?type=2 These will need to be redirected to the following URL types on the new domain: http://www.domain2.co.uk/charities/ http://www.domain2.co.uk/adopt/ http://www.domain2.co.uk/register/ I would also like a blanket/catch-all redirect from anything else on www.domain1.co.uk to the homepage of www.domain2.co.uk if there isn't a specific individual redirect in place. I'm literally tearing my hair out with this, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Link Building Question
Hey Moz'ers, I have created several blogs on different domains for the purpose of writing good content articles that contain 2-3 links per article that go back to my website. It has been up for about 3-4 weeks. I am not seeing my results/links showing up in OSE, is this because it still needs more time or is there something else I could be advised to look into? In theory these blogs will only contain 2-3 links from each domain to the site. I was also going to make sure the anchor text per link is different (keyword, brand name, random anchor like click here). Side note: How does this system sound as part of one small aspect to link building? red flags? Thanks for all the responses and advice.

One Way Links vs Two Way Links
Hi, Was speaking to a client today and got asked how damaging two way links are. i.e. domaina.com links to domainb.com and domainb.com links back to domaina.com. I need a nice simple layman's explanation of if/how damaging they are compared to one way links. And please don't answer with you lose link juice as I have a job explaining link juice.... I am explaining things to a non techie! Thank you!!

I currently have a client that has multiple domains for multiple brands that share the same IP Address. Will link juice be passed along to the different sites when they link to one another or will it simply be considered internal linking?
I have 7 brands that are owned by the same company, each with their own domain. The brands work together to form products that are then sold to the consumer although there is not a e-commerce aspect to any of the sites. I am looking to create a modified link wheel between the sites, but didn't know if my efforts would pay off due to the same IP Address for all the sites. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Natural Link Profile, low and high value links, really?
I cant really get my head around this one. I've read a few times when building links make sure you pick up so low value links as well. So here is an example (and lets say each link takes half hour to get): I got 5 hours of link building and this is what I have managed to get with the time. 1. 10 high value links all with PA/DA 50-60+ 2. 5 high value links with PA/DA 50-60+ AND another 5 low value links with PA/DA 10-. Surely #1 beats #2 hands down?

Domain Links or SubDomain Links, which is better?
Hi, I only now found out that www.domain.com and www.domain.com/ are different. Most of my external links are directed to www.domain.com/
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | BeytzNet
Which I understand is considered the subdomain and not the domain. Should I redirect? (and if so how?)
Should I post new links only to my domain?0
