URL redirect question
-
Hi all,
Just wondering whether anybody has experience of CMSs that do a double redirect and what affect that has on rankings.
here's the example
/page.htm is 301 redirected to /page.html which is 301 redirected to /page
As Google has stated that 301 redirects pass on benefits to the new page, would a double redirect do the same?
Looking forward to hearing your views.

15% is in the original algorithm, it may have changed but I doubt if much, if you read the algorithm its a pretty well thought out figure of decay.
I have seen the video and it is not very clear at all, maybe on purpose.
What he says is that a 301 loses as much PR as a link, I agree. all requests lose 15%,
You can't have a 301 without first going though a link. I think where people are getting confused is they think a 301 replaces a link request, it dose not, it is an extra request.
If you read the comments of the video and much discussion around the web you will see what I mean.

hmm, is there a source for the 15% statement? I never found anything clear about it, but here matt cutts seems to say that the pagerank dilution is a myth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Filv4pP-1nw

That's not what Google said, they said that a 301 redirect loses as much as a link, from the original algorithm that was 15%
so you have link to page.htm you loose 15%
it is then redirected to page.html, loose 15% of what left
it is then 301 redirected to page again loose 15% of what is left.
You are making 3 requests each loses 15%
With Bing they will only pass link juice though 1 redirect

I look at it like this -
1. Redirects are an overhead and mass redirects with redirects are inefficient.
2. Absolute pure link value is not passed on so further redirects have a little more clouding effect.
3. Bad housekeeping. Imagine the root htaccess has a redirect to a URL that is redirected in a sub-directory. It starts to be rather messy.
-
ah okay, then i wouldn't worry about it too much. two 301s is definitely no problem.
-
Thanks Philipp, we haven't done it by choice - it is a CMS quirk unfortunately.
-
two redirects are no problem, though you could redirect both these pages to the final /page instead of going through the intermediary /page.html
here is matt cutts about how many 301 you can chain together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA

Which URL would you choose?
1 – www.company.com/subfolder/subfolder/keyword-keyword-product (I’m able to keyword match with this url) or 2. www.company.com/subfolder/subfolder/product (no url keyword match) What would you choose? A url which is "short" but still relevant, or, a url which is more descriptive allowing “keyword” match? Be great to get your feedback guys. Many thanks Gary

Popup Question
Hi Everyone, I have a question. Your input will be very much appreciated. My company's new website design is using a popup. I have some reservation about it and I want to know what your thoughts are. Ok, some information on what this popup is like. When a user clicks on a subcategory page, there's a popup that would ask for size, color, etc - it's like a form and those are the criteria. If nothing is selected, the product list on the subcategory page doesn't load - so the only thing is showing is the the H1 and description but everything else is empty. When a user does select a criteria the landing page is no longer the subcategory but another page with that ID. So basically the user never really land on the subcategory page but to another page with a different query string. Is this bad for SEO? Would you recommend to keep the popup? Thanks,

Title Length Question?
So we have a lot of UGC on our site and so the title of pages is often created by the user and this has created about 400 pages with over 70 characters and I was just wondering what people think. I know typically keeping them short and sweet is the best thing, but what about when it's the user doing it? Should I go ahead and cut off the titles at 70 characters or keep them? I don't see it hurting traffic so I'm basically just looking for opinions right now.

Shorter URLs
Hi Is there a real value in having the keywords in the URL structure? we could use the URL: Mybrand.com/software/tablets/ipad/supertrader.html Or instead have the CMS create the shorter version mybrand.com/supertrader.html and just optimize this page for the keyword 'supertrader ipad software'

Regarding Canonical Url
We have a e-commerce website. Our own homegrown:-) We recently visited Google Webmaster tools and could see that Google mention we have double Meta tags for some main and subcategories. Each Product Category on our site have a subcategory/ Sub url - "Bestseller", "On Sale", "just arrived". The sub url is not a really a real category and we can therefore not make totally unique description and title for does urls. domain.com/category domain.com/category/bestseller

domain.com/category/on-sale
domain.com/category/just-arrived We are thinking about 2 solutions. 1. Canonical Url on subcategory pointing to main category.
2. Or add a word bestseller, on sale or just arrived in front of the meta title/description. We can do this from code. I personally opt for option 1. But I am little unsure what is the best way to go. Thanks in advance for your advice0 -
Dynamic Parameters in URL
I have received lots of warnings because of long urls. Most of them are because my website has many Attributes to FILTER out products. And each time the user clicks on one, its added to the URL. pls see my site here: www.theprinterdepo.com The warning is here: Although search engines can crawl dynamic URLs, search engine representatives have warned against using over 2 parameters in any given URL. The question to the community is: -What should I do? These attributes really help the user to find easier the products. I could remove some of the attributes, I am not sure if my ecommerce solution (MAGENTO), allows to change the behavior of this so that this does not use querystring parameters.
