How about a discussion on Penguin 2.0?
-
Penguin 2.0 was officially released today. I'm sure we've all seen Matt's video.
http://searchengineland.com/penguin-4-with-penguin-2-0-generation-spam-fighting-is-now-live-160544
Ideas for building sharable, linkable content? New strategies? What to avoid, what not to do, etc?
Let's get a discussion going!

Amazing ..... this huge update (from what I read on other sites and listening to Matt) and almost nothing here on SEOMoz.....What is up with that.
-
Good point Maria. Google will be pretty unstable for the first little while. It's better to keep calm and carry on with good content
-
Daniel,
To your first point -- for my main keywords (which according to Google have been commercial in intent for the last few years -- i.e. the kw queries bring up only retail options) are now showing reviews from authoritative/journalistic sites. So for instance, "Men's Jeans" might have used to bring up all retail stores, now it might bring 8 stores (plus ads) and 1 or 2 "Men's Jeans" reviews from GQ or something to that effect.
But having said that, I started noticing this about a week ago...

Google penguin 2.0 rolled out today!
I saw many some changes on Google. -
A few observations from the many keywords and sites I monitor:
1. A lot of what I track is in reviews of various products. I've seen a big jump for Consumer Reports. In many instances they now have two listings and they are higher than where their one previously was. Anyone else seeing this?
2. I'm seeing a lot of new sites I haven't seen before, especially after the first page. In the top 20 of one of my main keywords there are 4 new domains that have never been there before...nor should they be. Horrible sites. One of them is [extremelylongkeyword2013] (dot) blogspot.com. It's pretty nuts to see that.
3. In every search, whether searching for the product or reviews of the product, sears, amazon and walmart are almost always the top three in some order. I'm even seeing Wikipedia higher than ever. This is a shuffle from what used to be.
4. I'm seeing a lot more about.com results than I did before.
5. I have noticed News results on almost every search, many unwarranted. Often the news results are appearing after the top 10.
6. No major shakeups on any of my own sites. Little bit of shuffling, some up, some down, but nothing major. Biggest winners I am seeing are consumer reports, sears, amazon and walmart.
-
I find that the first few weeks after an update the SEO world is awash with dangerous speculation. I'm excited to see some real data on sites that have recovered. Until then I'm going to try to avoid speculating.
-
To me it looks like larger authority sites are ranking better. I had a few top position drop to under position 5-10 (I deal with mainly local niches), and now see larger websites although not as relevant as mine doing better imo.
-
I'm with Jesse -- it will take a bit before we can tell anything conclusive, but I'll watch my site, and if I notice anything I will report and add to the discussion. I don't think it will be anything unexpected if you have been following what Google says and watching the trends within your markets for the past few weeks/months.
But we will see...
-
Will probably be awhile before we know anything concrete but my guess would be the same strategies of 1.0 apply toward 2.0. I'd imagine they just widened the umbrella, so to speak.
We'll see! I've got a close eye on a few sites I'm curious to see what will happen to...

Two Similar Profile Pages: One Ranks 2 in Google - The Other 150
My client's site has a directory of doctors on it's site and they are targeting weight loss surgery patients. The problem is that when searching "weight loss surgeon richmond va" one of the doctor's profiles ranks 2nd in Google organic results while the other is not even in the first 10 pages. Both have very similar link profiles and I have checked all the technical things like noindex tags, canonicals, etc to see if that might be the problem but it all checked out. The second doctor's profile IS indexed in Google, just not ranking. We have done a lot of work to push his profile page up in the rankings but all efforts seem to have fallen short. Here are the profiles: http://advancedsurgicalpartnersofva.com/physicians/profile/Gregory-L-Schroder-MD - ranks 2 in Google http://advancedsurgicalpartnersofva.com/physicians/profile/Matthew-Brengman-MD-FACS - does not rank Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Google Penguin 2.1 Penalty - Recoverable?
Hello, I have a client that was hit very bad by the Google Penguin 2.1 update. He mentioned he did an intensive link analysis and removed all the bad links; however there were a lot of them (around 6000). His domain has a decent sized domain authority of 30/100. I'm wondering if it's worth it to try and save his domain, or start fresh from a new one. Due to the high number of links I'm not 100% confident that all the bad links were taken care of, and I've heard that even if you remove the links Google won't lift the penalties. What would you do...get a new domain, or risk the next couple months trying to save the existing one?

If Penguin 2.0 targets specific pages and keywords, should I spend less SEO effort on them since will they be harder to optimize? Penalty repair is only starting at end of year.
I’m working with a company that got hit by Penguin 2.0. They’re going to switch to white-hat only for a few months and review analytics before considering repairing the penalty. In the meantime, would it make sense to focus less SEO effort (on-site optimization, link building, etc.) on any pages or keywords that were penalized or hit hardest? Or are those the pages we should work on the most? Thanks for reading!

Website Survived Last Year Penguin & Panda Updates but dropped Jan 2013?
Hi, I have a website which was gaining good rankings through 2012 and even looked in pretty good shape after all of the Penguin and Panda updates in 2012 but in Jan 2013 the sites rankings have been very poor as it dropped for all terms. It is still in the index and webmaster tools shows the sites keywords but is showing places of 100 or so rather than 10 - 16 in the seeps. The website is www.mywebsitehosting.org Any ideas why this has dropped in January and what can I do to fix it? Thanks. P.s I have made a change to the homepage content but inner pages for the website also dropped to which have the same content as they did a few months ago.

Can we get our picture next to the article? Let me know if we need to convert to html for (1) and/or (2)

Help, really struggling with fixing mistakes post-Penguin
We had previously implemented a strategy of paying for lots of links and focusing on 3 or 4 keywords as our anchors, which used to REALLY work (I know, I know, bad black hat strategy - I have since learned my lesson). These keywords and others have since plummeted up to 100 spots since Panda 3.3 and Penguin. So I'm trying to go in and fix all our mistakes cuz our domain is too valuable to us just to start over from scratch. Yesterday I literally printed a 75 page document of all of our links according to Open Site Explorer. I have been going in and manually changing anchor text wherever I can, and taking down the very egregious links if possible. This has involved calling and emailing webmasters, digging up old accounts and passwords, and otherwise just trying to diversify our anchor text and remove bad links. I've also gone into our site and edited some internal links (also too weighty on certain keywords) and removed other links entirely. My rankings have gone DOWN more today. A lot. WTF does Google want? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should we be deleted links from all private networks entirely or just trying to vary the anchor text? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's the best way to hold newly purchased domains over 2 years?
Hi, A friend has just bought 3 domains and is not planning to build websites with them for around 2 years. He asked me what the best thing to do with these domains was...I have 2 ways of look ing at it: a) Putting a holding page on these and submit to Google Webmaster Tools - this way they are indexed by Google and hold search engine trust when the site finally goes up - HOWEVER, if they are not updated with fresh content would that work against them in 2 years time? b) Simply redirect them to their existing site and don't do anything else. Let me know your thoughts. Adido.

Why does this 1-page doorway rank #2?
Search on "santa cruz custom cabinets." In my SERPs, I'm seeing exact match santacruzcustomcabinets.com rank #2. This is a 1-page site provided by Yellow Book as part of an ad it sold to this cabinet shop. The site has no other pages, no inbound links, etc. So much for Google saying it's going to turn down the meter on exact match domains because that's all I see this website, if you want to call it that, has going for it. what do you see? Why is it ranked so high? Why is it above the site below it for example? And why doesn't Google lower the boom on Yellow Book for these doorway pages? Thought you'd all find this interesting. Any comments?
