Would 37,000 footer links from one site be the cause for our ranking drops?
-
Hey guys,
After this week's Penguin update, I've noticed that one of our clients has seen a dip in rankings.
Because of this, I've had a good link at the client's back link profile in comparison to competitors and noticed that over 37,000 footer links have been generated from one website - providing us with an unhealthy balance of anchor terms.
Do you guys believe this may be the cause for our ranking drops?
Would it be wise to try and contact the webmaster in question to remove the footer links?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi
continue optimizing and do not assume it will get back to where it was before.
I see some of the site I optimize stuck in new positions and only a very slow movement upward.
I guess it takes a lot of work to move up again

When you say a "waiting game", do you mean weeks? Months?
We've now returned to page three for the keyword.
-
Hi Tom
this may be a waiting game.
I would assume this link is not the only reason for the drop in ranking.
continue with your site review. get busy creating content and clean any other unnatural inbound links.
-
Just an update on this; after removing the footer links we're still seeing a downward movement for one of the most competitive keywords that we were ranking on the first page for.
As I mentioned in my last message, a couple of days ago it dropped to third page and now it's on page 8! Should we be looking at a reconsideration request even though we didn't receive an actual warning from Google?
-
We've now managed to remove the footer links that were incoming from the website I mentioned.
Any advice on the next stage of the process? Or is it just purely a waiting game? Should we submit a reconsideration request? Will we be able to see any immediate changes?
To give you an idea of the scale of the ranking dips; the site was originally floating around 6/7/8 for a competitive keyword but has now dropped to the third page.

Hey Tom,
That's great. Just the sort of confirmation I was looking for.
I'll get on to the process of removing these links now.
-
Hey there
That's really an unnatural amount. And if it looks unnatural it's always in line for a penalty.
Has a commercial anchor text been used? Or is it brand? Even if it's brand, it's still a grotesque amount of links, while many of the pages linking to your client's site may be from low quality pages. If it was a commercial anchor text, partial or exact match, then I'd be in little doubt this would cause the penalty.
I'd get the links removed ASAP, or ask the webmaster to make the links nofollow, although that may not suffice now the penalty has been put down.
If this coincided with the penguin update, the likely thing is that you won't see a recovery until the algorithm refreshes - unless we hear otherwise from Google - which is pretty frustrating. A manual penalty can be appealed any time with a reconsideration request, of course.
Hope this helps.

Agency footer link, do we keep it ?
Hello ! I was wondering if it's still a good idea to let a do-follow link on the bottom of agency released websites. Because they obvisouly come from different websites with no link with a web marketing agency. Do we have to keep them in the footer in no-follow ? If we do so, how to get some link juice from the different websites ? It sounds a bit stupid but one of my partners went from PR7 to PR5 recently. I guess Penguin 2.0 did not like all its links from its customers' website. Tks a lot !

Should I link to competitors?
Hi, I was wondering: we work in an extremely competitive market. There are 6 companies, offering the same service in my country: price comparison in a niche market. The competitors have hundreds of different websites, using iframe-techniques. Would it be helpful for me to link to those 6 competitors, in a piece of content about our company strategies, USP's and overview of the market? From a transparency point of view, i would prefer telling my visitors there are other competitors, which are undoubtedly performing very well, but we perform better on several aspects of the price comparison. On the other hand, my competitors benefit from the backlinks as well. Is my gain bigger than the gain of my competitors do you think? Has anyone tested this once?

Are press releases a form of paid links? Matt Cutts on paid links
According to Matt Cutts latest video about paid links everything that allows Page Rank to pass through is considered paid link and is against Google's rules. I think this is geared more towards directories but aren't 90% of press releases just another form of paid links? You pay to game the system, to manipulate the search engines. He goes on to say that if you "nofollow" the link there will be no penalty. It will be interesting to see how much their revenues will decrease if all press release websites & article distribution networks will have to nofollow their outbound links. He makes it very clear that paid ads are different because they do not manipulate search engines in any way. What do you guys think?

How do I rank higher in Bing/Yahoo?
We are doing really well across the board on Google, but having issues in ranking with Bing and Yahoo. What is different between the three search engines? I have read a few articles that Bing is happier with Flash, and they are more interested in Top Level Domain links, but what else is different? In Google we are sitting on page one for most terms, but are page 2-3 in Bing/Yahoo for the exact same terms. Any help would be appreciated!

Why a terrible website ranks number 1??
Hi, I'm an SEO newbie. A couple of months ago I launched a new E-Commerce website for my client : http://www.corporategiftsshop.co.za The site has over 1000 pages indexed in Google. I've done some link building and on-page SEO for the keyword terms : corporate gifts

promotional items
promotional gifts Currently the website ranks number 31 for "Corporate Gifts" in Google.co.za What I cannot comprehend, is that the site which ranks number 1 is simply shocking! http://www.corporategifts.co.za/ It is a single, static webpage with all links pointing to another website : http://www.promogifts.co.za It has 1 back link and a page rank of zero, yet it still ranks number 1? Can anyone give me a reason or some insight into this as it has me stumped.. Some of the other sites in the top 5 are also poor, yet they still rank high. Our site has a Page rank of 5 and 67 unique domains which links to it ( according to our webmaster tools ) yet it still only manages a 31 ranking?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I need to make sense of this, otherwise hang up my SEO gloves.. Regards, Marnus.1 -
Sub-Links of Organic SERP
I would like to know if you can modify (or suggest) the sub-links under an organic listing. For Example: Main Link/Title = COMPANY NAME - What We Do.... Sub-Links (popular pages within site) currently include links like: Locations / Catalog Request / Bestsellers Is it possible to suggest other pages as sub-links or do the search engines determine these? Please advise, and thanks in advance....

Another Domain ranking instead of my Domain
Hi My Domain name is Replicahause.net, 2 weeks ago my server had an outage for 3 days and my rankings dissappeared in google entirely, however i also noticed that when i typed in my domain name "replicahause" or "replicahause.net" , i would see abhishekyadav.com appearing on #1 in google which does a 301 into Replicahause.net I was able to convince the owner of Abhishekyadav to remove the 301 but my site Replicahause.net's Rankings still does not appear to have come back to google, is there something i'm missing here ? We were ranked #1 to #10 for at least 40 keywords, they've just seemed to dissappeard after the server downtime we had and the 301 from AbhishekYadav.com Thanks

Kilobytes downloaded per day: poss causes for MAJOR drop?
mid august, i went from averaging about 7 million kb/day but since have been at about 800 thousand. time spent downloading each page went up maybe 30% but pages crawled stayed the same. apart from the speed issue, don't think we've done anything to trigger this (none of the usual suspects like link structure, errors, sitemap, or new code). any other ideas? and is this disastrous for my indexing or am i over-reacting. thanks for your help
