Abandon Ship! Or do I stay aboard like a good captain?
-
Hey SEOmoz people. I need your advice.
I have a site that was entrusted to an SEO company last year to help me rank better. I didn't put any marketing effort into it myself (dumb), though I did spend lots of time on the web design & courseware preparation.
It was hammed during Panda and the first Penguin changes. I decided to fight for the site and spent lots of time learning about internet marketing and trying to get the dodgy links removed and disavowed. Plus I've started to create lots of quality content.
But after last weeks algorithm changes it's plummeted again. Dropping below rank 50 is a few cases.
My Question: How do you know if it's time to bail water or abandon ship and start up a fresh site?
Check out my Moz Ranking attached.

Hola Natan,
Thanks for your reply. Site speed and responsive design seem to be very important changes I can make. Thanks.
Plus I need to look more into Rich snippets.
Thanks for the advice brother!
-
Thanks Moosa,
You're right. I've only just started my quality linking. I guess I was a quite disheartened after the latest set backs. Onwards and upwards I guess!
-
Thanks Cesar, After panda and the various Penguin updates I've learnt a crazy amount about solid SEO practices. You're right, you learn nothing from getting it right all the time!
-
Mobile responsiveness, publisher markup, schema coding and hyperlocal all are things I can impliment relatively easily. I'll do some research into them all and see if I can implement them asap. Thanks Tim for your advice and time.
-
Thanks for advice. I'll run through all my on page errors and see if there is something wrong there. An easy thing to check and fix.

You must no abandon because you still ranking on 1st and 2nd page for some hard keywords.
1- Make your site faster
2- Make it responsive
3- Improve your social media (specialy your circles and +1's) and clean your toxic backliks (if is the case)
4- Look for long tail keywords. For example, follow not only "photoshop course sydney"; set in the dashboard "photoshop courses at sydney" "learn photoshop at sydney"... and many more... Use the Adwords keyword tool to discover more usefull kwords
5- Rich your snippets! Being at 6th and 8th on the ranks, you could get more traffic and improve your CTR if your snipet were showing 5 stars ratings, your face (Authorship) or something special chars in the description (that in a lot of cases is taken from meta description)

Witness, I've been in and out
clean up your back links
-
I agree with Tim! You are not kicked out of the search engines although I have witnessed websites who have gone in the penguin 1.0 and are back in rankings after cleaning links and doing some active inbound marketing the ethical way!
As far as your website is concern I think you have played half the battle! Link removal and disavow is one thing but in order to come back in rankings you should actively participate in inbound marketing, and get quality links, social shares and build branding in the digital world!
It is difficult but results will take you back in rankings from the desired key phrases and continuous effort will make you stay there for a longer period of time.

You are never going to learn unless you fail, fix your issues and it will make you a better SEO

I would not abandon ship. You are still ranking, even if it has dropped some. Seems like you have a great business and you have put some time into your site marketing. Based on what I am seeing, I would start bailing water. No reason to abandon ship until you have actually put some effort into it first. I think you are in better shape than you realize, but you need to take care of some basics right away:
- Make your site mobile responsive - MC just stated that this mobile usability was going to be a factor in Penguin. Last summer Google even said it prefers responsive sites
- Add publisher markup and authorship to your site
- Use Schema coding
- Focus on your local SEO efforts and hyperlocal authority
You have some pretty tough competitors, including the university on a very strong .EDU site, so you have to get your expectations aligned properly. Despite this, I think you can do have success.

I noticed similar drops in the latest report too (same date). That's really frustrating. However after digging a little deeper, I noticed that one of the modules we use with our CMS had a problematic update and it caused hundreds of duplicate pages, removing the NOINDEX tags from some pages. (pagination problem)
You should do the same and try to understand what may have caused the drop in rankings.
I looked at your attachment. Those are some very difficult keywords to rank for. That's not going to be easy if you start from scratch. By the way, I think Google is making some unfortunate changes again. I see irrelevant webpages outranking us all of a sudden because they have domain authority. Domain Authority is probably getting stronger again. It will make everything harder for new sites no matter what kind of content you have on your site.

Guest post linking only to good content
Hello, We're thinking of doing guest posting of the following type: 1. The only link is in the body of the guest post pointing to our most valuable article. 2. It is not a guest posting site - we approached them to help with content, they don't advertise guest posting. They sometimes use guest posting if it's good content. 3. It is a clean site - clean design, clean anchor text profile, etc. We have 70 linking root domains. We want to use the above tactics to add 30 more links. Is this going to help us on into the future of Google (We're only interested in long term)? Is 30 too many? Thanks.

Is Inter-linking websites together good or bad for SEO?
I know of a website that inter-links a handful of websites together (ex- coloring.ws interlinks to a handful of other sites, including dltk-kids.com, and others). Is this negative for SEO? I was thinking about creating a few related sites and inter-linking all of them together, since they will all be relevant to each other. Any thoughts would be great!

How to know if a link in a directory will be good for my site?
Hi! Some time ago, a friend of my added our site to a directory. I did not notice it until today, when in the search results for my domain name, the directory came in the first page, in the four position. My friend wrote a nice article, describing our bussiness, and the page has a doFollow link. Looking at the metrics of that directory, I found the following: Domain Authority: 70; main page authority: 76; linking domain roots: 1383; total links: 94663 (several anchor texts); facebook shares: 26; facebook likes: 14; tweets: 20; Google +1: 15. The directory accept a free article about a company, does not review it before it is published, but look for duplicated articles representing spam; so one company can only have one listing (in theory). Is there any formula to know if a directory is safe to publish a doFollow link? If they don't review the link I would say is not a good signal, but is there any other factors to take into account?

Interesting case of IP-wide Google Penalty, what is the most likely cause?
Dear SEOMOZ Community, Our portfolio of around 15 internationalized web pages has received a significant, as it seems IP-wide, Google penalty starting November 2010 and have yet to recover from it. We have undergone many measure to lift the penalty including reconsideration requests wo/ luck and am now hoping the SEOMoz community can give us some further tips. We are very interested in the community's help and judgement what else we can try to uplift the penalty. As quick background information, The sites in question offers sports results data and is translated for several languages. Each market, equals language, has its own tld domain using the central keyword, e.g. <keyword_spanish>.es <keyword_german>.de <keyword_us>.com</keyword_us></keyword_german></keyword_spanish> The content is highly targeted around the market, which means there are no duplicate content pages across the domains, all copy is translated, content reprioritized etc. however the core results content in the body of the pages obviously needs to stay to 80% the same A SEO agency of ours has been using semi-automated LinkBuilding tools in mid of 2010 to acquire link partnerships There are some promotional one-way links to sports-betting and casino positioned on the page The external linking structure of the pages is very keyword and main-page focused, i.e. 90% of the external links link to the front page with one particular keyword All sites have a strong domain authority and have been running under the same owner for over 5 years As mentioned, we have experienced dramatic ranking losses across all our properties starting in November 2010. The applied penalties are indisputable given that rankings dropped for the main keywords in local Google search engines from position 3 to position 350 after the sites have been ranked in the top 10 for over 5 years. A screenshot of the ranking history for one particular domain is attached. The same behavior can be observed across domains. Our questions are: Is there something like an IP specific Google penalty that can apply to web properties across an IP or can we assume Google just picked all pages registered at Google Webmaster? What is the most likely cause for our penalty given the background information? Given the drops started already in November 2010 we doubt that the Panda updates had any correlation t this issue? What are the best ways to resolve our issues at this point? We have significant history data available such as tracking records etc. Our actions so far were reducing external links, on page links, and C-class internal links Are there any other factors/metrics we should look at to help troubleshooting the penalties? After all this time wo/ resolution, should we be moving on two new domains and forwarding all content as 301s to the new pages? Are the things we need to try first? Any help is greatly appreciated. Is a directory like this white hat? Useful?
This is one of my competitor's backlinks: http://bit.ly/mMPhmn Prices for inclusion on this page go from $50 for 6 months to $300 for a permanent listing. Do most of you guys do paid directories like this for your SEO Clients? My gut is telling me to run away...but I don't want to miss a good opportunity if I should be taking it.

Can good penalize a site, and stop it ranking under a keyword permanently
hi all we recently took on a new client, asking us to improve there google ranking, under the term letting agents glasgow , they told us they used to rank top 10 but now are on page 14 so it looks like google has slapped them one, my question is can google block you permanently from ranking under a keyword or disadvantage you, as we went though the customers links, and removed the ones that looked strange, and kept the links that looked ok. but then there ranking dropped to 21, is it worth gaining new links under there main keyword even tho it looks like google is punishing them for having some bad links. the site is www. fine..lets...ltd...co....uk all one word cheers

Which of these elements are good / bad link building practices?
Hi, I need some help. I recently got some help with an seo project from a contractor. He did 50 directory submissions and 50 article submissions. I got good results, going up about 20 places (still a long way to the first page!) on google.co.uk on a tough key word Since this project I learned article marketing is not cool. So I am wondering about what I should do next. The contractor has proposed a new bigger project consisting of the elements listed below. I don’t know which of these elements are ok and which aren’t. If they are not ok are they: 1) a waste of time or 2) something I could get penalized for? Let me know what you think?? Thanks, Andrew 100 ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 100 article directories 50 PRESS RELEASE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED & SCREENSHOTS]-> 1 PR writing & submissions to top 50 PR distribution sites each 150 PRIVATE BLOGS SUBMISSION [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 150 private blogs submission 100 WEBSITE DIRECTORY SUBMISSION -> 1 url (home page) submitted to 100 top free web directories 50 SOCIAL BOOKMARKING [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1 url of site submitted to top 50 social bookmarking websites 40 PROFILE BACK-LINKS [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1-3 url's of site submitted and create 40 profile websites 50 SEARCH ENGINES -> submission to all the major search engines 20 NEWS WEBSITES -> Ping all links from reports to news websites
