Anybody having success with Cross-Domain canonical?
-
Has anyone been using rel="canonical" to attribute content that has been republished on Domain B... back to Domain A, which is the original source?
The videos below say that this should be working... I am asking to hear from anyone who has done it.
Has it worked as you expected? Did Domain A get the benefit that you expected?
Thanks!

Thanks Doc!
Always good to be reminded that google often changes their mind on how they handle these things.
I think I am going to try it. If things don't work or if things change I can yank it off of the secondary site.

Thank you for the report, Linda.
Glad to hear that it seems to be working.

I don't have much direct client experience with it (not very applicable to my previous niches), but I know that a couple of SEO friends in the newspaper industry reported using it successfully (very successfully, in one case) not long after Google approved cross-domain use. Of course, like anything, Google seems to modulate things over time, especially if they get abused. We're seeing a lot of changes in how 301s are handled this year, and I expect Google to start altering how canonicals (both internal and cross-domain) work, especially when people misuse them.

Yes I have done it and yes it seems to be working.
The daughter of the owner of the company I work for published an article on her site which we reprinted on ours, using the rel=canonical tag to indicate that her site had the original.
When I search for a string from the article, her site comes up and ours does not.

Similar Keywords on Addon Domain
Hi all, I'm looking at setting up a second website targeting some similar keywords to my existing blog. I host the site through bluehost and am considering hosting the other website as an addon Domain. Whilst the content on both websites will be different both will target the same keywords. Does anyone know if because I'm targeting the same keys words using an addon Domain this could impact my existings site google rankings? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using rel=canonical
I have a set of static pages which were created with the purpose of targeting long tail keywords. That has resulted in Domain Authority dilution to some extent. I am now in the process of creating one page which will serve the same results but only after user selects the fields in the drop-down. I am planning to use rel=cannonical on the multiple pages pointing back to the new page. Will it serve the purpose?

How to prevent duplicat content issue and indexing sub domain [ CDN sub domain]?
Hello! I wish to use CDN server to optimize my page loading time ( MaxCDN). I have to use a custom CDN sub domain to use these services. If I added a sub domain, then my blog has two URL (http://www.example.com and http://cdn.example.com) for the same content. I have more than 450 blog posts. I think it will cause duplicate content issues. In this situation, what is the best method (rel=canonical or no-indexing) to prevent duplicate content issue and prevent indexing sub domain? And take the optimum service of the CDN. Thanks!

Canonical Question
Our site has thousands of items, however using the old "Widgets" analogy we are unsure on how to implement the canonical tag, and if we need to at all. At the moment our main product pages lists all different "widget" products on one page, however the user can visit other sub pages that filter out the different versions of the product. I.e. glass widgets (20 products)
Technical SEO | | Corpsemerch
glass blue widgets (15 products)
glass red widgets (5 products)
etc.... I.e. plastic widgets (70 products)
plastic blue widgets (50 products)
plastic red widgets (20 products)
etc.... As the sub pages are repeating products from the main widgets page we added the canonical tag on the sub pages to refer to the main widget page. The thinking is that Google wont hit us with a penalty for duplicate content. As such the subpages shouldnt rank very well but the main page should gather any link juice from these subpages? Typically once we added the canonical tag it was coming up to the penguin update, lost a 20%-30% of our traffic and its difficult not to think it was the canonical tag dropping our subpages from the serps. Im tempted to remove the tag and return to how the site used to be repeating products on subpages.. not in a seo way but to help visitors drill down to what they want quickly. Any comments would be welcome..0 -
Change of domain name?
Hello, We are currently developing a new site for an existing online clothing retailer. The existing site is on a .co.uk domain, however we are targeting a global market and wondered whether we could/should launch the new site under a .com address and whether this would be beneficial? Most of our back links come from Affiliate blogs and we could quite easily change these to the new URL. Thanks Bilal
