Moving a website from one domain to another
-
Hi Guys,
I figured I'd investigate this fully before potentially ruining a client's traffic.
The rundown:Two websites; one is an ecommerce store and the other is just a brochure website which has references to the ecommerce store.
The ecommerce store is hosted on a server we control whereas the brochure one isn't, the URL for the brochure store is nice and simple which is the reason for the switch, as the ecommerce URL is very long and hard to remember.
Now from an SEO point of view will it be a case of 301 redirecting every URL from the old domain name to the new one one or is there an easier option?
Any tips or links to more information would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

And don't forget to look into the Change of Address feature in Google Webmasrter Tools:

short answer: yes

I have a similar issue and found this thread - if the previous url has identical content to the new url, does the redirect solve problems that might arise with duplicate content?

A recent blog post that should help you
http://moz.com/blog/save-your-website-with-redirects.
Your situation should make the move easy enough as the urls will be the same bar the root domain. This can easily be done in htaccess, here is a guide:

Basically a 301 redirect is the best option, if you are literally moving a whole domain and the urls will stay the same (save for the domain name) you can use the below
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^olddomain.com$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.olddomain.com$ RewriteRule (.*)$ http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]</ifmodule>
Thats assuming you are running apache.

Two websites, one company, one physical address - how to make the best of it in terms of local visibility?
Hello! I have one company which will be operating in two markets, printing and website design / development. I’m planning on building two websites, each for every market. But I’m a bit confused about how to optimize these websites locally. My thought is to use my physical address for one website (build citations, get listed in directories, etc. ) and PO Box for another. Do you think there is a better idea?

Same URL names in one domain
Hi All, I have 9 different subdirectories for languages in the same domain example: www.example.com/page.html www.example.com/uk/page-uk.html www.example.com/es/page-es.html we are implementing hreflang tags for the languages. I know it is better to translate URLs, but we won't for now, because all the NON-ASCII characters. But we are thinking to get rid of the dashes on the languages URL: -uk or -es, so it will be: www.example.com/page.html www.example.com/uk/page.html www.example.com/es/page.hrml would this be a problem? to have same page names even if they are in different subdirectories? would we need to add canonical tags, at least for the main domain URLs? www.example.com/page.html Thank you, Rachel

MOving from one page format to another
I have a page that I optimized for a valuable keyword (at least it is to me!) and it gets very good traffic. Problem is that the page needs to constantly updated with new "news" related to the topic area. I have developed a page-type that will have the same static content as the original page, but it will now automtaically index related content from the rest of the site so the "news" section stay fresh and up-to-date. I am now okay to do something like permanently redirect that page to the newly built one? I have also run the newly designed page through tests on Moz and it receives on receives an A-grade from the on-page optimization tool. I am just wanting to ensure I cover all bases, because I do not want to risk losing the top search result and all that valuable traffic.

Moving most (not all) content to another domain
Hi there, My company website has 3 main sections, two of those sections (each containing approx. 50 pages) will be moving to a separate website. The new website will also be owned by the same company. The new domain does not yet exist. I read this guide http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-guide-how-to-properly-move-domains , its very good, however it refers to moving the whole domain to a new URL. Are there any specific differences to consider in my situation for a partial move? Many thanks in advance! Nigel

More than one web domain
Hi What is best when considering using more than one domain on a website, what the best policy ? it's a question I get asked a lot, usually because prior to any seo efforts the main domain name purchased is not keyword rich or an abbreviated company name etc. what impact do new domains have on SEO compared to older existing domains- is it worth changing a generic company named domain for a keyword rich domain? if having multiple domains pointing to the site is beneficial how best is it to configure? How do i inform Google? How do both domains get index when there is only one physical site? How should i monitor it, Analytic s, SEO moz? Will the domain compete against each other and effect SEO rank? Are they best used for marketing purposes on external sites, adverts driving traffic to the main site. I'm aware there are lots of questions above, any answers/ opinions , links to further info would be greatly appreciated. cheers
