Used a free WP theme and now Webmaster Tools has shown hundreds of broken links
-
Hello everyone,
We've recently launched two new music instrument listing websites.
One in the US http://www.yourinstrument.com
One in AU http://www.yourinstrument.com.au
While we're waiting for our custom, branded WP to be built, I went and put up one of the free themes with closely matching colors. Clearly, this was a mistake because now my WMT account has spit out around 200 'not found' errors and my Moz account is calling them around 282 'dupe page titles' and 'content'???
1. Aren't WP outbound links supposed to be 'nofollow' ? / Why is my theme creating strange links?
2. Can I clean all these up with assigning rel=canonical to the original blog post? Do I need to wait for the new theme to be installed and then 301 the random URLs found by Moz and WMT ?
weird link examples:
Please help

Ok, so you are saying your webmaster tool says tons of 404 errors and your Moz account says multiple duplicate titles....
404s: This will not be easy but you can fix it...all you have to do is to identify all the 404 pages and then the pages that are most relevant to them... use the redirect plug-in and redirect all the 404 pages to most relevant 200 (active pages) pages available on the website.
Duplicate titles: For Duplicate Titles all you have to do is to identify all the duplicates and feature update with unique titles accordingly!
Note: Usually using a Free WP theme is a shitty idea as they are not SEO friendly and contains tons of development faults!
Hop this helps!

By default WP outbound links are follow links - u can use plugins to change that behaviour

There is no point having rel=canonical on 404 pages , since the search engine spiders won't crawl them
I have had good experience with using http://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/ for my redirection issues , you can try that . If you are not familiar with wordpress get someone who knows their way around wordpress to give you a hand
Your permalinks looks really weird http://www.yourinstrument.com.au/blog/index.php/2013/06/gigging-musicians-guide-principals-professionalism/ with index.php in between the domain and the post title. I have seen that come up on IIS servers. You can read this for more info on how to avoid that http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks . It's also a good idea to get rid of the date from the url .
I would seriously consider hiring someone to have a look over how things are setup on the site.

Specific external links
So...we have an A+ rating with the BBB and have for some time. We have a link from their page. We also use sites like pricegrabber and reseller rankings and have links from those. What I can't figure out is why links from the BBB and Pricegrabber don't even show up in open site explorer but the reseller ratings links are everywhere. The BBB one is easily the oldest and the other two are roughly the same age (i.e. at least a couple years old.)

Links not appearing on Open Site Explorer
My site gained several new inbound links during December and only two of them are not all showing up on the latest Linkscape update. It seems to be the links that were created at the end of the month which are showing up, whereas a handful at the beginning of the month are nowhere to be seen. All the linking pages have been indexed by Google the links are do-follow, and one of the sites in particular is not obsure and has a DA in the 90's. I appreciate the Linkscape doesn't index everything, but I would have thought that more tof the results of my efforts would have shown up in OSE. I'd be really grateful if anyone could explain this to me please. Thanks Ben

Links listed in MozPro Crawl Diagnostics
Ok, seeing as I'm getting to the end of my first week as a Pro Member, I'm getting more and more feedback regarding the pages on my site. I'm slightly concerned though that, having logged in this morning, I'm being shown 407 warnings for pages with 'Too Many On Page Links.' According to the blurb at the top of the page, 'Too Many' is generally defined as being over 100 links on a page ... but when I look at the pages which are being thrown up in the report, none of them contain anywhere near 100 links. I seriously doubt there is a glitch with the tool which has led me to think that maybe there's an issue with the way my site is coded. Is anyone aware of a coding problem that may lead Google and SEOMoz to suspect that I have a load of links across my site? P.S. As an aside, when this tool mentions 'Too Many Links' is it referring purely to OBL or does it count links to elsewhere on my domain too? Cheers,

Is it possible to create a report where per page only external links are shown?
Hi all, When I create a report on page level (links to pages per page), it seems that also internal links are included. Is it possible to create a report where per page only external links are shown? thnx Dennis

Is there a beginners guide to using the tools and what do the results mean.
Great set of tools! But what would make them better is some type of guide to what the tools do (remember I am a new user) and how to maximize the results. Oh and while your at it what do the results mean.

Strange Links in OSE
Hey seomozers, The most recent Linkscape update has created some strange links to our domain. They are links which when I navigate to are download links, here is one example: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.9/updates/x86_64/headers/kernel-largesmp-0-2.6.9-89.0.25.EL.x86_64.hdr Now this links has nothing to do with our site and I can't see how it would count as a link to our domain, can anyone shed some light on why these types of links are being crawled as a link to our domain? Thanks Nigel

Why doesn't the BBB / Trustlink.org links show up in the Link Analysis?
I am curious why one of my client's main competitors (www.allbayhardwood.com) shows links from the Better Business Bureau and Trustlink.org (associated with BBB) but links from those sources do not show up for his domain (www.sanjosehardwoodfloors.com). He has been a BBB Acredited Business since 12/2010 and on file with them for probably as long as they have had the online version, which seems like plenty of time for the link to have been picked up. BBB has a very nice domain authority and it would be great to see these links show up. (they don't show up in webmaster tools either) Is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance guys and gals! (I know the site has other SEO issues - just getting started on pounding everything out.)
