Why do I have a lot of direct traffic from MSN and Yahoo with 100% bounce rate?
-
For MSN I have about 8000 hits of one page and a 100% bounce rate. In the last month I have about 400 hits from Yahoo with a 100% bounce rate. Msn is all different pages, while Yahoo is all the home page. What would cause this?

Assuming that your analytics tags are working properly (and that's definitely worth checking), I think you really need to dig in and see what queries you're firing on for these engines and how you're appearing on them. It may be that your page is just a mismatch to the query, or it may be that the title or snippet are misleading in some way.
I don't know of any overarching, general reason this would happen. It's likely to be pretty situational, and you may need to really segment this traffic and see what search users are seeing to find the answer.

For this to make sense, it's worth noting that MSN search is now Bing. Bing also powers Yahoo search.
I wonder if where Bing's engine isn't as good as Google they are showing your results when your page doesn't actually answer the user's question. If the page is contextually 'no good' they wont stay for long, hence the bounce rate.
Just a guess, though!

Spam Direct Traffic
Hello, Lately, I have been receiving a big amount of unexpected direct traffic from Boston. After analyzing with Analytivs, this is what I get (please, check attachment). Normally I would be blocking this traffic source straight away from my Google Analytics account, and also blocking this traffic from accesing my servers, but check out the analytic metrics: this traffic represents 12% of my total traffic right now!!! av. session duration is 4:53 !! bounce rate is 72% !!!! pages/session 1.44 !! Service provider is "Microsoft Corporation" who looks like one of the typical spammy service providers. My question is, is this a bot?? what do you think ? Thanks, Luis zUlVHIi

Alternative tools for Keyword Traffic
Hi There, Wondering if anyone has any other tools they would recommend using for finding out keyword traffic on websites. Currently (and I'm sure like most), my website is connected to Google Analytics and Google Search Console. My biggest frustration becomes the "(not set)" variable that appears when I go to review the keywords section. It's always such a large number and I have no way of finding out what people might be typing in and coming across my website. Of course, I understand the privacy factor as to why Google must do this but it's certainly difficult to analyze what's working and what's not. Any tips, tricks or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Lindsay

Two lots of Analytics - one not Universal
Hi, We have been using two lots of GA code on our website - one was the old code and we added the new GA code under a different property too. Now that the old code is redundant do I: update the old code on property 1 to the Universal version and keep running the two properties (not sure this is the one I should do) remove the old code from property 1 and don't replace it with Universal version (but what happens to historical data?) remove the new code in property 2 and update the old code to the latest Universal version (but what happens to the historical data in property 2 or doesn't it matter?) The current code on the site is: <noscript><p>Please enable javascript</p></noscript> <noscript><p>Please enable javascript</p></noscript> <noscript><p>Please enable javascript</p></noscript> <noscript><div>Please enable JavaScript for your browser.</div></noscript> I've clearly got a bit confused so help would be appreciated. Thanks

Drop in direct traffic & spike in Adwords, any relation?
So I noticed a significant (around 50%) drop in Direct traffic in analytics to one of my websites (compared to last month). I've also noticed a spike in Adwords for around the same number of sessions. The drop in traffic is pretty much isolated to one specific page, and it is the same page involved in the spike in Adwords. Is it possible that Google was not recognizing a portion of the Adwords traffic? That's the only theory I have, but we haven't changed anything with their tracking or Adwords, so I'm a little hesitant to go with that theory.

Figuring Out the Source of "direct traffic" by looking at landing page parameters
I have a client who runs an e-commerce website, and I noticed that 40% of his traffic and 25% of his sales are all attributable to Direct Traffic. At first, I tried to solve this problem by tagging all of the previously untagged links in his e-newsletter, which I expect to be very helpful. However, then I looked at the landing pages for his direct traffic, and I see that it is almost entirely filled with thousands of unique URLs that begin with a question mark followed by the name of his e-newsletter or shopping cart vendor. It would be the equivalent of having a url like the following: "www.willmarlow.com/?constantcontact=keya;sldkfjsdlfkjdf;sldkjf" If we have this amount of information in the link, shouldn't there be a way to add additional parameters to the URL to move this traffic out of the Direct column? Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks.

How Can I Record .zip Traffic in Google Analytics
The company I am with shows traffic coming in to .zip files in Google Analytics. The traffic being recorded stopped a while back, but I know people are still downloading/visiting these .zip ULRs. I'm not sure how they were recording/tracking the .zip URLs (in Analytics) before, but I'd like to track them once again. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks
