Advice on Link Building?

I know webmasters shouldn't focus on link building but unfortunately there are some types of content that doesn't get shared as much as other. And for content to go viral, it ain't that easy and it's almost impossible in some smaller niches where you don't have the volume to go "viral".
That said I know about the common link building techniques. I know I can submit guest posts but when you're competing with websites that have over 10,000 backlinks, there is no way I'm going to get close to this with guest posting and commenting on other blogs.
One way I found for getting backlinks is to publish interviews. Most of the time, people/businesses you interview like to link to this type of content. Publishing value-added content about other businesses' products or services may get some backlinks in return but not that often.
So other than that, can some of you share some "out-of-the-box" link building strategies?

Oh my.. Perfect! What you need to do is create a blog!
There's no reason you can't have a blog. I don't care if you sell kitty litter, toiletries, or butcher tools. Everything is blog-worthy. Become the source on why your product is useful. What new products just came out. Why your store is the best resource to get them from. And what exactly you can do with this product. Tie all of these together and you've got yourself a ton of link building opportunities.
And yes, host your infographic on your domain and spread them out to places like visual.ly and other infographic sites.
Why do you need the link pointed to your homepage? What difference does that make? The link juice passes to your domain no matter what directory/page/image internally it's pointed at. And the brand is then furthered. Drop your URL in the description or small at the very bottom of the infographic if you'd like and you might get some direct referrals.. But really as a link-building/SEO tactic the exact route of your linked content doesn't need to be all to your home page.
As EGOL said, Build an info site with a store! DO THAT!! You will succeed.

Hi Jess,
How does infographic work for an ecommerce website? We don't have a blog. If we create and distribute an infographic, links would be pointing to infographic url right? such as url.com/img.jpg. How do we get links to the home page instead of infographic image url?

Another idea is to reach out to the websites that you would like to get links from and ask what they're interested in seeing. An open ended question like, "What should I build?" probably won't yield great results, but if you have a couple of ideas and ask a site owner if they're interested, they'll a) let you know if that's a good idea before you even build it, b) probably add some information that will make your new content richer, and c) will already be engaged and more likely to link to your content once it's built.

If you have the content, the links will become easier to find. Yes it's a daunting task going up against the likes of what you're suggesting, but you'd be surprised. Sites with thousands of links like that don't always win on sheer numbers alone. In fact, sometimes those numbers hurt them. It all depends where those links are coming from of course... but I digress.
The interviews are a great idea, keep that up. Maybe you can publish a survey and offer a nifty prize, then at the end of the survey post your findings. Keep it relevant to your niche and people will be interested in your charts/graphs/stats. This could gain you a whole bevy of links.
At MozCon Wil Reynolds talked about creating one infographic that changed his life. It was shared all over the stinkin' place and picked up by all sorts of media. All it takes is a hit like this and you'll be off and running quicker than you realized was possible.
Good thread. This is what we are all striving to do.. (Or at least what we SHOULD all be striving to do. There are some who are still unsure what it means to be an SEO/inbound marketer in this day and age.)

What Links to Disavow?
I am looking through my website's link profile that I pulled directly from Google Webmaster Tools. What is the best way to determine the links to disavow? Maybe the Webmaster Tools list is not the best list for this process but I really need to clean up the links that are hurting the site's SEO. Does anyone have any insight?

Questions About Link Detox
Greetings: In April of 2014 an SEO firm ran a link removal campaign (identified spammy links and uploaded a disavow). The overall campaign was ineffective and MOZ domain rank has fallen to 24 from about 30 in the last year and traffic is 20% lower. I purchased a basic package for Link Detox and ran a report today (see enclosed) to see if toxic links could be contributing to our mediocre rankings. As a novice I have a few questions for you regarding this the use of Link Detox: -We scored a domain wide detox risk of 1,723. The site has referring root domains with 7113 links to our site. 121 links were classified as high audit priority. 56 as medium audit priority. 221 links were previously disavowed and we uploaded a spreadsheet containing the names of the previously disavowed links. We had LinkDetox include an analysis of no-follow links as they recommend this. Is our score really bad? If we remove the questionable links should we see some benefit in ranking? -Some of the links we disavowed last year are still linking to our site. Is it worthwhile to include those links again in our new disavow file? -Prior to filing a disavow we will request that Webmaster remove offending links. LinkDetox offers a package called Superhero for $469.00 that automates the process. Does this package effectively help with the entire process of writing and tracking the removal requests? Do you know of any other good alternatives? -A feature called "Boost" is included in the LinkDetox Super Hero package. It is suppose to expedite Google's processing of the disavow file. I was told by the staff at Link Detox that with Boost Google will process the disavow within a week. Do you have any idea if this claim is valid??? It would be great if it were true. -We never experienced any manual penalty from Google. Will uploading a disavow help us under the circumstances? Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!!! Wrong titles in site links
Hello fellow marketers, I have found this weird thing with our website in the organic results. The sitelinks in the SERP shows wrong written text. As in grammatically incorrect text. My question is where does Google get the text from? It is not the page title as we can see it. kKsFv0X.png

Unpaid Followed Links & Canonical Links from Syndicated Content
I have a user of our syndicated content linking to our detailed source content. The content is being used across a set of related sites and driving good quality traffic. The issue is how they link and what it looks like. We have tens of thousands of new links showing up from more than a dozen domains, hundreds of sub-domains, but all coming from the same IP. The growth rate is exponential. The implementation was supposed to have canonical tags so Google could properly interpret the owner and not have duplicate syndicated content potentially outranking the source. The canonical are links are missing and the links to us are followed. While the links are not paid for, it looks bad to me. I have asked the vendor to no-follow the links and implement the agreed upon canonical tag. We have no warnings from Google, but I want to head that off and do the right thing. Is this the right approach? What would do and what would you you do while waiting on the site owner to make the fixes to reduce the possibility of penguin/google concerns? Blair

First Link on Page Still Only Link on Page?
Bruce Clay and others did some research and found that the first link on the page is the most important and what is accredited as the link. Any other links on the page mean nothing. Is this still true? And in that case, on an ecommerce site with category links in the top navigation (which is high on the code), is it not useful to link to categories in the content of the page? Because the category is already linked to on that page. Thank you, Tyler

Links in body text
From a purely SEO /link juice perspective, is there any benefit to linking from body text to a page that is in a pervasive primary navigation? The primary nav puts a link at the top of the HTML. With the tests done by members of this site, the "first link counts" rule negates the link juice value of a link in the body text if there is already a link in the nav. Now I've also seen the data on using hash tags to get a second or third link, but ignoring that, it would seem that links in the body text to pages in the nav have zero effect. This brings me to another question - block level navigation. If anchor text links pass more juice than links in the top navigation, why would you put your most coveted target pages in the top nav? You would be better off building links in the content, which would create a poor user experience. To me, the theory that anchor text links in the body pass more juice than links in the primary nav doesn't make any sense. Can someone please explain this to me?

SEO from links in frames?
A site was considering linking to us. Their web page is delivered entirely via frames. Humans can see the links on the page, but it's not visible in source. I'm guessing it means Google can't detect the links, and there is no SEO effect, but I wanted to confirm. Link Acquisition - link building
When using Site Explorer to find out my competiters links so I can do some link aquisition SEO do I look for the "inbound" links or or "linking domains"? Also, what filters should I choose? I want to make a spreadsheet as Rand suggested in his video and start to prioritize my link building.
