Negative SEO? Or?
-
We had another website attacked by negative SEO, so now I'm getting a little suspicious. The website went from around 26 linking domains to 1001 links from 311 linking domains in webmaster tools. They're all in different languages, and directories.
I asked everyone at the organization and they said they didn't sign up for any services. I trust them, because I know they don't have time to breath right now, with 7 product launches this month.
OSE says 79 links from 26 linking domains, so the spam links must be gone now.. but the website's been wiped pretty much clean from Google.com and is just starting to slowly (very slowing) crawl back
Is there anything else that could be targeting the website with hundreds of links? Anything I can do to protect it? I've disavowed the links, but they're gone now so it probably won't help.
Thanks in advance for ideas
UPDATE:
The website is still not recovering in Google.com. It seems to be ok in .ca, but a recent conundrum is that it's been basically wiped clean from Bing and Yahoo rankings. I've emailed Bing and the team says it is indeed indexed, and not penalized (manually anyways). OLE says the "bad links" are no longer there, but webmaster tools still lists them all (I know, they don't update that often).
My latest strategy is to start building some really strong links into the website with killer content. Their products are amazing (tv lift furniture) so it shouldn't be difficult. Just time consuming! I'm also being super-active on their social media platforms, to see if this helps boost rankings in the mean time.
Any further tips to recover from negative SEO?
(Note: I do not need link removal tools. We have a process that's working just fine). -
what Dr. Pete just said is right on the money and I would go with his advice.
Respectfully,
Thomas

If they've been removed and disavowed, unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do but wait on the negative SEO front. Moving forward with positive link-building is important - it sounds like part of the problem is that your link profile may have been in a fairly weak position to begin with.
That said, if the removal was long enough ago, you need to make sure that nothing else is going on, like technical issues (including crawl issues), content quality issues, etc. It's not uncommon for link-related problems to be coupled with other issues (you'd be surprised how many sites have been hit by both Panda and Penguin, for example). You don't want to end up in a position where you wait 6 months for the link-related issues to go away, and then realize that wasn't the problem at all (or was only part of the problem).
If you've been hit on all three major engines, my gut feeling is that this goes deeper than a one time attack of bad links.

Maybe this will be of help I know that this is a very tough area and honestly I want to help you as much as I can it seems like the information I gave you was stuff that we all know Hildebrand and they strongly profile and Google trust you more yet but if you're still being attacked that probably doesn't help very much right now
Competitors Spamming? Google Says Report Them
http://www.seroundtable.com/google-report-spam-to-us-15187.html
Here are some more tools and discussions that may be able to help you. Google says to report their competitors that are standing you with links I would do that instantly. And I would also try to attribute any cost you incur having to purchase tools in some cases and spend your time fighting off people who are doing malicious things to your website I would like to see your competitor or whoever is doing this pay.
If you catch them please take them to court.
I hope this is of some more help to you I'm sorry that there is no definitive way of blocking this.

Thanks, but the links have already been removed. They were there long enough to cause significant damage on Google.com though. Now we'll have to wait for Google to crawl the site again...
I'm more interested in finding out if it was indeed negative SEO, or it's linked to a specific directory or.... ???
I looked at removeem.com and it doesn't look like it would be useful for this, as they're short term attacks.

If the webmaster is actually targeting you and trying to hurt your website. And I am sure there are people in this world that will try to do the stupid things and I would be really pissed if I were you. However I think it's good that you're asking everyone prior to appointment fingers.
If anybody points that links to your website and is responsible for that website or has access to it they may not care if it is complete junk and may use it only for negative SEO however they will be heard by Google what I would do unfortunately is you must follow the rules when removing bad links. One tool I like to use is
I primarily like it because it is made by company that is recommended here at Moz
called
If you check out their URL http://www.virante.org/ is has interesting tools for checking out links. However unfortunately at this time I do not believe there's anything that you can do to prevent anyone from linking to your website without. I think unfortunately that this is a huge problem that Google will have to deal with and should deal with. I would make it extremely clear to them when you have tried to contact the webmasters if they refuse that you believe that they are in fact targeting you for negative SEO and I think Google at a lot of pressure to them hopefully putting them in a separate category than others in the future but we can only hope for that Google welcome up with a solution for this problem as it really is something anybody can do to anyone else and an unfortunate scenario I feel extremely bad that you actually have to go through this at work in order to deal with something that somebody else's maliciously done to you.
I hope this of is of help.
Sincerely,
Thomas

More or Less pages helps in SEO?
Hi all, I have gone through some articles where less pages are suggested and they claim that they will be favoured by Google. I'm not sure as with limited pages, we can only target limited keywords. There might be threat from Google in-terms of doorway pages for more pages. But one of our competitor has many pages like dedicated page for every keyword. And their website ranks high and good for all keywords. I can see three pages created with differnet phrases for same on keyword. If less pages are good, how come this works for our competitor? Thanks

Best tips needed to compete in SEO industry? (Thank you in advance)
Hello Moz Friends, So I wanted to ask for your friendly tips. Im in Colorado and my competition has business names like Colorado SEO and then one company owns like 5 of the top 10 Google ranked sites under different names. Im an honest guy, but how does someone compete in a crazy competitive industry? How about you? Did you start at the very bottom and never got to the top? Or did you outrank the leaders? I know seo people are smart, but it's easy to wonder if there is any room left? So just wondering your success or failure stories with competing in a competitive market online Any tips are appreciated! Chris

Negative SEO campaign just started against my site. What do I do?
As the question says, I have just got alerts of new links, being clearly a negative seo campaign against my site. We are talking, lots of spammy, rude anchor text type keywords being used. Whilst I only have alerts of a small number (around 30), it has just happened and I know from the type of spammy links they are that more will be coming. So, question is, should I disavow? Do I keep submitting new disavows every few days as more are discovered? Any advice will be greatly be appreciated.

Definition of Black Hat SEO
I recently had an old client that called me in a bit of a panic over a significant loss of rankings due to penguin. The internet marketing company she had hired, is actually a very large player in the industry, but because I'm not out to slander anyone, I won't name names. They engaged in some "link building" that resulted in the vast majority of the website's anchor text being keyword-rich, exact match anchor text from such gems as www.link-add.net. They also placed a couple dozen incredibly keyword-rich articles on the site that were clearly not meant for human consumption, and were only accessible through a footer link that's only located on the homepage. The client forwarded me a response from them saying, (quoting verbatim). "We have never engaged in any black hat SEO techniques, nor will we ever engage in any black hat SEO techniques. Just that notion is ridiculous" So clearly, the strategy I outlined above, in the mind of this company, is not black-hat SEO. So getting to my point: **if that's not black hat, then what is? ** I'm posing this question largely because I'm appalled that a large internet marketing company seems to be suggesting that the aforementioned techniques represent good, sound SEO, and I'd like to get an idea as to what people in our industry actually feel are good, acceptable practices. Where is the line? Can we not set higher standards for ourselves?

Negative backlinks
Hi I have heard that penguin penalizes a site for bad backlinks. Do you think that it is true? Do you think that is possible for someone to penalize my website adding my link to some spam website? I'm worried that someone could do it...

Explain To Me How Negative SEO ISNT Real?
I'm seeing lots of "offers" springing up to do negative SEO on your competitors. I know people keep insisting this sort of thing is just a bogeyman, but follow my logic here: We know the Penguin update PENALIZED, and not just devalued "over optimization." Read: exact match keyword links. We know that if your link profile is too "unnaturally" keyword heavy, (it should be majority your brand or your domain or your company name, etc) you get penalized. Again, not devalued, PENALIZED. Ok. So what is to stop a blackhatter from using one of those software bots to just kill a competitor? Knowing the above two points, lets say a website is ranking for "cool widgets". Why not just create a bunch of exact match keyword spam links for "cool widgets" targeting that website. In a while, the Penguin penalty kicks in and bammo. The thing that scares me about the post Penguin landscape is that google has specifically named an activity ("over optimization") that will get you PENALIZED. So, don't do that, right? Except, that means they've explicitly outlined an activity that will be penalized, and is easy for others to do to you, and that you would be powerless to prevent. I await the usual "this is an age old worry that has never come true" replies. But if you reply that way, ask yourself, can you refute the logic of the points above? And also... oh no... It's happening. I'm seeing it.

Is my SEO strategy solid moving forward (post panda update) or am I doing risky things that might hurt my sites down the road?
Hey all, WIhen I first started doing SEO, I was encouraged by several supposed experts that it was a good idea to buy links from "respectable" sources and as well make use of SEO experimentation offered on Fiverr. I did that a lot for the clients I represented not knowing if this was going to hurt. But now after the latest Google shift, I am realizing that this was stupid and thus deserving of the ranking drops I have received. In the aftermath, I want to list out here what I am doing now to try to build better and stronger rankings for my sites using white hat techniques only... Below is a list of what I'm doing. Please let me know if any of these are bad choices and I will immediately dump them. Also, If i am not including some good options, please let me know that too. I am really embarrassed and humbled by this and could use whatever help you can offer. Thanks in advance for your help... What am I doing now? *Writing quality articles for external blogs with keyword links back to sites *Taking the above articles and spinning them at SEOLINKVINE to create several articles *Writing quality articles for every site's internal blog and using keywords to link out to other sites that are on different servers - All articles are original, varied and not duplicate content. *Writing quality, relevant articles and submitting them to places like Ezine *Signing clients up for Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, etc so they have a social presence *Working to fix mistakes with onsite issues (mirror sites, duplicate page titles, etc.) *Writing quality keyword-rich unique content on each page of each site *Submitting URL listings and descriptions to directories like JoeAnt, REALS and business.com (Any other good ones that people can recommend that give good link juice?) *Doing competitive research and going after highly authoritative links that our competitors have That is about it... HELP!!! Thanks again
