Having a terrible time ordering the CSS Styles and Scripts in my header
-
Hi Guys,
I am having a terrible time trying to get the correct optimized (for speed, none blocking etc) order for loading my external css and JS.
I follow the recommendations from Google Page Speed or Chrome Audit and it seems no matter where I move the CSS file too (top or bottom) it complains about more blocking and stopping rendering of the page. My URL is http://www.MyFairyTaleBooks.com if some smart person out there could help me figure out what I am doing wrong and the order in which my should be organized I'd appreciate it!
Oh I'm not a developer but I can re-arrange text in a file!
Thank you!

Would you mind explaining to me how you are finding this information. What do I need to look for specifically? I'm having the same issues except there's 11 blocking script resources and 13 blocking CSS resources. I'm not finding too much information on searches (that I understand) nor do I understand Google's mod_pagespeed. Thank you very much. Sorry to highjack the forum. It was the only Q&A that came up in the Moz search.

Thank you seems to have cleared that one item up at least!

It seems fixed on my end, also the javascript problem is fixed too. Clear your cache and try, see this screenshot http://screencast.com/t/y93SDZScAR

Thanks! I did the move and it still complains, maybe it is the external justuno.com stuff that is really the problem?
-
Check it now, the editor bugged out.

Do not see anything

I did not notice this before, but it looks like you have a js error on your site. Try moving this
Right under this line
rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.myfairytalebooks.com/product_images/favicon.ico?1370451016" />

Hi Sorry,
I miss-understood, I did what you suggested and it still complains this time about 2 blocking scripts and 1 blocking css
Eliminate external render-blocking Javascript and CSS in above-the-fold content
Your page has 2 blocking script resources and 1 blocking CSS resources.

Thanks,

All of the css needs to be included before the first line of javascript, including inline javascript. That is why you would move that css up to where you deleted the two lines from.
-
Where do you suggest the actual CSS include happen at the very beginning or the very end of the
-
Try taking these two lines out
http-equiv="Content-Script-Type" content="text/javascript" />
http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css" />
And moving this line to where they were
href="http://www.myfairytalebooks.com/templates/__custom/Styles/styles.css" media="all" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" />

Multiple H1s and Header Tags in Hero/Banner Images
I work on education websites, and our sites are being flagged by SEO and accessibility checkers for having multiple H1s. The home pages have the site name as an h3 in the hero image, and an aspirational headline (think: Be Like Mike) as an H1. The sub-pages have two H1s: one on the site name in the banner image, and the other on the page title. Note that the site name is very keyword-rich. If we were to remove the H1 and H3 tags from the hero/banner images, would it do any SEO harm? At the same time, we’d rewrite the H1 on the home page to be more keyword-focused. Any other options? I also read that it’s OK to have multiple H1s as long as it’s clear which H1 belongs to the heading area and which one belongs to the body area of the page. Thanks in advance!

Should I spend time going back and optimizing old blog posts for SEO or just write new posts?
The site I manage (Boutique Estate Law Firm) has at least 350 old blog post archived that were not well optimized for SEO. Would it be valuable to go through and optimize those old posts or just write new optimized posts even though they are on the same subjects? My boss loves to churn out 300 word posts.

Unused CSS Tool Recomendations
Hey moz, Im currently converting my site to mobile as its an older template based on tables it will make a lot of CSS redundant. I cant delete as i go incase a page uses it im unaware of so need to clean it up when its done. Is there a tool that crawls my entire website and highlights the unused CSS in the files? Ive found a few paying tools that claim to do so but am reluctant to just spend money on something without a recommendation. Cheers!

CSS Sprites
I have 6 social icons linked from the header area of my site and I am trying to replace them with a CSS Sprite but cannot get it to work. The current icons are located in a header widget area of my theme through a text box. When I add the new html in the text box and the CSS in the style sheet, the sprite does not show up. Are there any good tutorials on this subject?

Combining CSS
One recommendation from a page speed analysis of my site was to combine CSS (external style sheets) but after reading more on the topic others say that this is not always best. Any thoughts on either approach?

Same H1 tag in header across entire site
Should I have the same H1 tag in my header through out my entire site? Or is this considered to be self canalization for my main keywords. For example right now I have an H1 tag with my main targeted keywords on every page on my site, even if the pages content doesn't necessarily match the keywords in the H1 tag.
