Add selective URLs to an XML Sitemap
-
Hi!
Our website has a very large no of pages. I am looking to create an XML Sitemap that contains only the most important pages (category pages etc). However, on crawling the website in a tool like Xenu (the others have a 500 page limit), I am unable to control which pages get added to the XML Sitemap, and which ones get excluded.
Essentially, I only want pages that are upto 4 clicks away from my homepage to show up in the XML Sitemap.
How should I create an XML sitemap, and at the same time control which pages of my site I add to it (category pages), and which ones I remove (product pages etc).
Thanks in advance!

Hey Intermediate,
Here's my setup - image - http://screencast.com/t/qThC401hQVUp Be careful of the line breaks if you want your sitemap to be pretty (I'm not sure if it also works if everything is on a single line).
Column A:
Column B:
URLColumn
<lastmod>2013-08-27</lastmod>
Column
<changefreq>always</changefreq>Column E:
<priority>1</priority>Column F:
=CONCATENATE(A2,B2,C2,D2,E2)You will need to add this as first 2 lines in your sitemap:
and add to the end, but you should be good to go!
I Hope that helps! -
Thanks Schwaab!

Hi Travis
That sounds like a smart way to go about this. Could you please guide me regarding how to add parameters like lastmod, priority, changefreq etc in the XML sitemap, using the URLs that I have in the Excel sheet.
Thanks!

If you have a list of all the URLs on your site, it is easy to create a sitemap using excel. I have a template that I use and I can crank out a 50k URL sitemap in 5 minutes.

I would recommend purchasing Screaming Frog. You can crawl the site and sort the URLs by level. Remove the URLs that are too deep from the crawl and export to XML sitemap. Screaming Frog is definitely worth the price to unlock all of its features and have an unlimited crawl limit.

I need an XML sitemap expert for 5 minutes!
Hi all! I'm hoping that someone with a lot of experience with XML sitemaps can help me out here... When submitting my sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools, these are the results:
Technical SEO | | IcanAgency
2,414,714 Submitted
34,721 Indexed And there's also tonnes of warnings. Would anyone be able to take a quick look at these sitemaps to perhaps advise me on what's going wrong there? These do not load without the www, not sure if this is an issue? http://www.eumom.ie/sitemap.xml

XML Sitemap Creation
I am looking for a tool where I can add a list of URL's and output an XML sitemap. Ideally this would be Web based or work on the mac? Extra bonus if it handles video sitemaps. My alternative is XLS and a bunch of concatenates, but I'd rather something cleaner. It doesn't need to crawl the site. Thanks.

Google News Sitemap
Currently for our website Thinkdigit, we are using a rss sitemap (http://www.thinkdigit.com/google_sitemap/news_rss.php) for news. Please let me know is this the right format or we should use xml format only. Also we have lost a huge chunk of traffic from news search, Previously it used to be around 10,000 visit from google news, now it is just 300 visit per day.

OSE says URL redirects to URL with trailing slash but it doesn't.
Site is www.example.com/folder/us and OSE says this URL redirects to www.example.com/folder/us/, but it does not. When I look at the OSE report for the latter version with the "/" it says "No Data Available For This URL". Why would that be? The original URL is www.example.com and it redirects to www.example.com/folder/us. Is this anything I need to worry about? I thought that the trailing / doesn't really mean much anymore but nonetheless, why does it think it redirects there?

When to use canonical urls
I will be the first to admit I am never really 100% sure when to use canonical urls. I have a quick question and I am not really sure if this is a situation for a canonical or not. I am looking at a my friends building website and there are issues with what pages are ranking. Basically there homepage is focusing on the building refurbishment location but for some reason in internal page is ranking for that keyword and it is not mentioned at all on that page. Would this be a time to add the homepage url and a canonical on the ranking page (using yoast plugin) to tell Google that the homepage is the preferred page? Thanks Paul

Sitemap.xml - autogenerated by CMS is full of crud
Hi all, hope you can help. the Magento ecommerce system I'm working with autogenerates sitemap.xml - it's well formed with priority and frequency parameters. However, it has generated lots of URLs that are pointing to broken pages returning fatal erros, duplicate URLs (not canonicals), 404s etc I'm thinking of hand creating sitemap.xml - the site has around 50 main pages including products and categories, and I can get the main page URLs listed by screaming frog or xenu. Then I'll have to get into the hand editing the crud pages with noindex, and useful duplicates with canonicals. Is this the way to go or is there another solution thanks in advance for any advice

Does Google index XML files?
Does Google or other search engines include XML files in their index? More specifically, I am wondering how Google knows the difference between an xml filetype and an RSS feed.
