What are your best moves if you want to get your traffic and rankings back for a specific keyword?
-
Hi all
We are server and website monitoring company for over 13 years and I dare to say our product evolved and mastered over the years. Our marketing not so much. Most of our most convertible traffic came from the keyword "ping test" with our ping test tool page, and for the first 10 years we have been positioned 1-3 in Google.com so it was all good. The last two years we have been steady on positioned 8-9, and since 7-30-13 we are on the second page.
We have launched a blog in 2009 at http://www.websitepulse.com/blog, and post 2-3 times a week, and are working on new website now, and my question is what is your advice in our situation?
Aside from providing fresh content and launching a new website is there anything specific we could do at this stage to improve our position for "ping test"?
Thanks
Lily

That was splendid add up! Thank you very much for the time and effort you've put to help us out. I will do all the things you suggested.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your tips. We did that yesterday, now we are waiting for Google to update its index. We are also paying closer attention to our competitors now, checking what kind of content they develop and publish, and I am now researching their link profile.
You guys are great help!
Thanks so much

You've not dropped massively, just enough to knock you onto the second page.As such, I'm not sure you need to be overly worried about a potential penguin/panda penalisation.
I don't think you need to start panicking and disavowing links. This could do your more harm than good.
It's looks like a pretty competitive keyword with lots of high Domain Authority sites ranking on the first page.
The first thing I notice is that you don't have many links to your Ping Test page. Only 11 external links (from 7 domains). For a tool such as this, it doesn't suggest that this is one of the more popular/useful versions. (The #1 result in the SERPS has more than 1400 linking route domains.)
I also notice that all (almost all) of the internal links on your site have the anchor text "PING". You might want to make this a little more relevant (both to visitors and search engines by changing it to "Ping Test" for example. I've also got to say that finding it in your multi-level drop downs was an interesting challenge!
First, I'd take a look at your analytics to find out what the value of organic search visitors to this page are to your business. What's the conversion rate? How many of them end up taking a look at your services and then signing up? This, combined with the average lifetime customer value will give you feel for how much time/effort you're willing to spend on this page/keyword.
While looking at your analytics I'd also take a look at some of the page engagement metrics. What's the bounce rate / time on site look like. Are people actually using the tool or just leaving straight away.
If people are bouncing back to the search results and picking another tool from the SERPS then that's a pretty good signal to google that perhaps the searcher didn't find what they were looking for on your site.
It might be worth looking at the design (I'm sorry, it looks a little dated) and the user experience. My first impression looking at the ping test page is that there's a lot of small text which just adds friction. A nice big friendly input field and an appealing button would be nice!
How many of your visitors come from mobile? Worth looking at your analytics again. If people are trying to use their phone to figure out if their server is up, then I'm sure they'd appreciate a mobile optimised/responsive form to make their life easier.
Can you remove any of the clutter? What about removing the marketing message so that it's only displayed on the results page?
It's important to remember that your site isn't the only horse in the race!
I would do some competitive analysis - look at the Moz Keyword Difficulty report to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the pages you're competing with in the search results.
Take a look at the competitors pages. What are they doing that you're not? Be honest and consider whether your page is really the best page for someone searching for "ping test".
It'll be super-tough, but can you come up with something that'll make your ping-test stand out? Some USP that you can use to promote your tool (and maybe get some more, relevant links.)
Once you've got something worth promoting, it'll make it easier to get links.
You might find it worth your while to look at what other opportunities you may have to attract search traffic.
Hope this helps.

More of a minor point on your blog you can also rel=author on your blog to help establish your self as a bit of an authority on your niche (not forgetting the buzz word of rel=canonical too!). This ties in with what Karl said about G= accounts too. Obviously this isn't going to help massively but I'm sure Google trusts this kind of source more.
You can also always take a look at your competitors see why they are ranking better than you and learn a few tips & tricks from them.
Best of luck!

Ron,
Our target is not local and we do not consider local SEO for now, although I am very much interested in local search.
Thanks for adding up!
-
Lily,
If your target market is localized you may want to consider doing some local off page SEO. Getting these directories set up has created some dramatic results for our clients. A simple first step is to use the get listed.org tool to get the basic local directories set up.

Hey Karl
Thanks so much for your tips! I will definitely prepare link analysis and emphasize on our Google+ presence.
Anyone else would like to add up?

Hi Lily,
I think the first thing you need to do is a full back link analysis because it sounds as though you may have been hit a little with the Penguin/Panda updates. Have a look through your links and be really strict about the ones that you know are quality and get rid/disavow the others. That will give you a good starting block.
The next thing is, what are you going to do with this fresh content that you are producing? You need to find websites where it will add value, it doesn't necessarily have to be about the ping test but it adds to your credibility in the industry. Make sure you have your Google +1 account setup. There has been a lot of talk about it recently with Moz directors getting a bit of negative comments from Matt Cutts but it will definitely help to have a G+1 account up and running.

Google Rank 0 - Best way?
We are trying to create tables or bullet points on each of our pages summarising the content of the page and get it to rank on position 0 on Google. This technique worked for some searches but not all so we were wondering: Is it beneficial to add links or not ? Is there a keyword limit? We are on Magento 2 if that helps. Thanks James

Irrelevant blog contents negatively affect ranking for main keywords?
Hi Moz Community, I am working at a branding company. Currently, we found our ranking for main keywords (branding company) is dropping a little. I am suspicious of the new blog posts that we published lately. We wrote different kind of stuff, such as company culture, how to inspire employees, the importance of leadership and some other stuff that is actually not as related to our main keyword - branding company. My question is, will these irrelevant posts hurt our ranking for main keyword, to some extent? Thank you. Best, Raymond

Keywords in URL: sub-directory or single layer keywords?
Hi guys, im putting together a proposal for a new site and trying to figure out if it'd be better to (A) have a keyword split across multiple directories or duplicate keywords to have the keyword hyphenated? For example, for the topic of "Christmas decor" would you use; (A) - www.domain.com/Christmas/Decor (B) - www.domain.com/Christmas/Christmas-Decor in example B the phrase 'Christmas' is duplicated which looks a little spammy, but the key term "Christmas decor" is in the URL without being broken up by directories. which is stronger? Any advice welcome! Thanks guys!

Homepage not ranking in Google AU, but ranking in Google UK?
Hey everyone, My homepage has not been ranking for it's primary keyword in Google Australia for many months now. Yesterday when I was using a UK Proxy and searching via Google UK I found my homepage/primary keyword ranked on page 8 in the UK. Now in Australia my website ranks on page 6 but it's for other pages on my website (and it always changes from different page to page). Previously my page was popping up at the bottom of page 1 and page 2. I've been trying many things and waiting weeks to see if it had any impact for over 4 months but I'm pretty lost for ideas now. Especially after what I saw yesterday in Google UK. I'd be very grateful if someone has had the same experience of suggestions and what I should try doing. I did a small audit on my page and because the site is focused on one product and features the primary keyword I took steps to try and fix the issue. I did the following: I noticed the developer had added H1 tags to many places on the homepage so I removed them all to make sure I wasn't getting an over optimization penalty. Cleaned up some of my links because I was not sure if this was the issue (I've never had a warning within Google webmaster tools) Changed the title tags/h tags on secondary pages not to feature the primary keyword as much Made some pages 'noindex' to try and see if this would take away the emphases on the secondary pages Resubmitted by XML sitemaps to Google Just recently claimed a local listings place in Google (still need to verify) and fixed up citations of my address/phone numbers etc (However it's not a local business - sells Australia wide) Added some new backlinks from AU sites (only a handful though) The only other option I can think of is to replace the name of the product on secondary pages to a different appreciation to make sure that the keyword isn't featured there. Some other notes on the site: When site do a 'site:url' search my homepage comes up at the top The site sometimes ranked for a secondary keyword on the front page in specific locations in Australia (but goes to a localised City page). I've noindexed these as a test to see if something with localisation is messing it around. I do have links from AU but I do have links from .com and wherever else. Any tips, advice, would be fantastic. Thanks

Whats the best way to revive a directory that was 301'd and now I want to remove that?
Last year i 301'd one of my directories on my site, pointing everything to a different directory. Long story short I am going to sell this product line again and would like to just remove the 301 to that original directory, but I am reading that the 301s are also cached in most browsers for a long time. Has anyone successfully done this and if you did what was it that you had to do? Thanks Mike

Can't seem to get traffic back post Panda / Penguin. WHY?
I have done and am doing everything I can think of to bring back lost traffic after the late 2012 updates from google hit us. I just is not working. We had some issues with our out of house web developers which screwed up our site in 2012 and after taking it in house we have Eden doing damage control form months now. We think we have fixed pretty much everything. URL structure filling up with good unique content(under way. Lots still to do) making better category descriptions redesigned homepage. Updated product pages (CMS is holding things back on that part otherwise they would be better. New CMS under construction) started more link building(its a real weak spot on our SEO as far as I can see) audited bad links from dodgy irelavent sites. hired writers to create content and link bait articles. Begun making high quality video's for both YouTube (brand awareness and viral) and on site hosting (link building and conversions) (in the pipeline not online yet). Flattened out site architecture. optimise internal link flow (got this wrong by using nofollows. In the process of thinking of a better way by reducing nun wanted Nav links on page.) i realise its not all done but I have been working ever since the drop in traffic and I'm just seeing no increase at all. I have been asking a few questions on here for the past few days but still can't put my finger on the issue. Am I just impatient and need to wait on the traffic as I am doing all the correct things? Or have I missed something and need to fix it. you anyone would like to have a quick look at my site and see if there is an obvious issue I have missed It would be great as I have been tearing my hair out trying to find the issues with my site. It's www.centralsaddlery.co.uk Criticism would me much appreciated.

How can I get an XML sitemap in the order that I want?
I use Screaming Frog and Xenu on a daily basis and I use them for sitemap creation, but the functionality is limited. With huge sites, it's really easy to create an ordered list of URLs for the sitemap in excel or word and upload that to Screaming Frog to crawl. The only problem is that it won't export the sitemap in the order that I uploaded it. Does anybody know of a tool that will do this or am I doomed to sit an manually arrange the URLs the way I want?
