Homepage On-page Optimization
-
How do you all handle homepage optimization, if you (or a client) offers a variety of services? Our homepage has the strongest link profile of any of our pages, but it lists all the areas of law we cover. Therefore, it has too many keywords and none really rank well. Should we just pick our most profitable areas and optimize for that?
www.kempruge.com in case anyone would benefit from looking at the actual page.
Thanks,
Ruben

Craig and Dan,
Thanks so much for the specific suggestions. I put this thread on the back burner, and just now noticed it had new responses. I wish I had checked it earlier, but thanks a lot. This info is really helpful.

A couple of things that I see on the home page:
The title tag is a bit long. Google will end up rewriting the title for the search query to make it match up with the searcher's question/intent but you're putting a lot on Google. Instead I would redo the title and meta description to read more like the best converting adwords ads that you've been running - or at least to be more brand-heavy.
The home page should be more brand-centric and push the link equity to the inner pages. The header tags should also be structured so that the most important tags for site structure are H1, then H2, etc.
I noticed that your H2 tags are "Contact Us" and "Latest News" - not really anything unique to this page and not the search topics you want to be ranked for. The main topics (Family Law, etc) are all "H3" tags. I'd redo the styling to bump those up to H2's and demote "contact us" and "latest news" to something else.
Lastly, all of the blog posts in "latest news" are only linked with "Read More" as the anchor text. I would change that to be linked by the title to have more relevancy passed on to the sub-pages.

Hi Ruben
I fall along the lines of the other suggestions. Your homepage should get the most links, but the link value will pass through to the inner pages. Definitely optimize (on-site) the homepage for the brand as well as (in my opinion) the most broad keyword - like "Florida Attorneys" - not that you would rank for that per se (or obsess about ranking for it), but it's just good architecture telling Google the topic/category of the entire site, as well as telling the user an all encompassing phrase of what the company is.
Now, the title tag is currently wayyy too long, as I'm sure you know. Something like "Kemp & Ruge Law Group - Florida Attorneys" would work just fine.

definitely go with long tail branding on the front page. I would create a specialty page for the specific service to "further elaborate" on what we do and what they get or something like that. You homepage will give those pages a boost and you can even get 2 pages to show up.
-
I would go with the brand name of the website as well. Just ensure you have great navigation to filter any strength through to the more targeted pages and start producing content on these that is linkable also.

Whenever I do optmisation for clients, I "brand out" the homepage and design it for maximum conversion. I then use individual pages for keyword optimisation. If you overly optimize the homepage for keywords it can look spammy.
Whilst this should be taken as a general comment, I have seen good rankings for keyword pages, even when the majority of backlinks are targeting the homepage with the branded anchor text.

Shifting target keyword to a new page, how do we rank the internal page?
I have been targeting one keyword for home page that was ranking between the postilion 6-7 but was never ranking on 1st as there were 2 highly competitive keywords targeted on the same page, I changed the keyword to an internal service page to rank it on 1st, I have optimized the content as well but the home page is still ranking on 11th, how do I get the internal page rank on that keyword

On page links
Hi I am really intrigued by Bloomberg strategy. if you look at their article pages they are full with internal links done with what I assume to be an automated process (too many pages to be done manually). it seems to work for them. I would love to hear your opinions.

How do I create multiple page URLs that are optimized for location and keywords that may be overlapping or the same?
Hi guys, I am attempting to create unique URLs for several different pages on a website. Let's say hypothetically that this is a website for a chain of Ice Cream Shops in Missouri. Let's say they have 15 locations in Springfield, Missouri. I would ideally like to optimize our Ice Cream Shop's in Springfield, Missouri with the main keyword (ice cream) but also the geo-specific location (Springfield), but we obviously can't have duplicate URLs for these 15 locations. We also have several secondary keywords, think things like: frozen yogurt or waffle cone that we can also use, although it would most likely be more powerful if we use the primary keyword. Any suggestions for how to go about doing this most effectively? Thanks!

Target keywords on homepage or sub page?
Is it better to target main keywords on a site's homepage, or in a sub page. I would usually assume the homepage, but if the domain for the homepage doesn't include the keyword is it better to have a sub page with an exact match URL? For example we target the keyword "abc123" Is it better to optimise the homepage: brandname.com Or create a page to target it: brandname.com/abc123/ And leave the homepage to target brand keywords, but link to the "abc123" page. Whats the best option?

On Page Optmisation for Newbie
Hi All, Literally just signed up - and thought I might be able to dive straight into my pages using the On Site Optimiser to check page, make some changes, then check again and see it have immediate effect on the analysis. Not so? Each time I click on "Grade My On Page Optuimisation" with the expectation that a box formerly with no tick now gets one, nothing changes :o( Chris.

Best SEO extension or plugin for on-page optimization
I was wondering what you guys might recommend for a browser extension or plugin that would help developers optimize each page for specific keywords. I'm looking for a tool that will give me a grade on how well it's optimized with a recommendation checklist. I would use SEOMoz's onpage analysis tool but it doesn't have access to my private development environment (hence the need for a plugin.) Recommendations? Thanks!

My website is saying I have duplicate page content and page title. How do I fix it?
Hi, I created a website on webstarts.com. After I launched it then ran a scan through SEO it says I have duplicate page content and page title. The 2 pages it is reading are technically the same page. www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com and www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com/index . I am unsure how to get rid of on of these as it keeps saying this is an error in the SEO scan. Could someone please advise me of what to do from here. Thanks!

Page Rank
I had just made a 301 re-direct on one of our product pages which had a PR of 4, now that Google has indexed the new page, it's now got a PR of 0, i'm struggling to understand why this could be, i know that you may see a drop of 1, which has happened in the past, but this drop just does not make sense. Any ideas of why this could be? Kind Regards
